  207. Faber, editor and publisher, The Gloom, Boom & Doom Report, tells Tavir Gill and Nikunj Dalmia of ET Now. Edited excerpts:What are rising yields across US as well as Europe indicating about the risk that the world is running on?The financial markets were already very fragile at the beginning of this year and this fragility has actually increased because there is a tendency among central banks to step back from asset purchases, letting interest rates gradually adjust on the upside. And so this liquidity that we have in the world has been diminishing. It is not shrinking, but it is growing at the diminishing rate. Then came the announcement of the Trump administration. It is a really bad idea to pick on China and to launch not only a trade war but a confrontation with the US’ largest trading partner who also happens to be a large buyer of US assets, bonds, stocks and of course, properties. This idea has disturbed the financial markets around the world and so they are adjusting on the downside. Now, I would not call that the crash. A crash happened in 1987 when the Dow Jones dropped 21% in just one day. In the US, we have gone from a peak to the current level, down by 7%. This is nothing. This is after an increase of the S&P from 666 in 2009 to the current level of over 2900. This correction is really not very meaningful but yet it may become meaningful. What is happening with the EM currencies? The fall also reflects the gain in the trade weighted dollar index pegged towards EM currency basket. Is the dollar buying seen as risk aversion or just better yield? It is the question more of this tightening global liquidity and the way emerging economies borrowed. They borrowed in dollars and so there is a lot of demand for dollars to pay the interest on the dollar debts. Number two, when you look at international investors, they have some cash and they have some bonds. If you look at what they do in terms of money in cash and in bonds, they can buy US treasuries. The 10-years now are available at an yield of 3% but they could also buy in Europe treasuries but the yield would be much lower. For example, in Germany they would get a yield of 0.5% on German governments. In Portugal, they would get 2.2%, in Spain 1.66%. The dollar compared to this European currencies and bonds is relatively attractive in terms of a yield. It is not particularly attractive as a currency because some emerging economies have a much better financial condition today than they had in the last crisis or in ‘97-98. If you ask me what I think about India, last time I said the currency has become a bit oversold and may rally a little bit, maybe to 71-72 against the US dollar. But I think the long-term trend of the Indian rupee is down. Why would rupee go to 100? 100 is still a distance away, it is more than 20%?Well the timeframe is I would look for is a depreciation of 5-10% per year for the next few years. You view on India, local factors are hurting, US interest rates are rising, what is leading to outflows here?Well first of all, India’s fiscal position is not particularly good. It has large deficits and also a current account deficit as far as I know and so either India has to increase interest rates meaningfully which would mean that the economy would be hurt or they obviously will have a weaker currency over time and nobody can deny the fact that over the last 10, 20, 30 years, the rupee has been a weak currency. So you do believe surely that there is more pain in store for the INR, right?Well as I said I always applauded Mr Rajan as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India for the simple reason that his objective was to have a stable rupee against major currencies but the financial sector in India bitched the whole time about Rajan because they accused him of keeping monetary policies too tight! Obviously, tight monetary policies are good for the rupee but not so good for the stock market. And now what do they have? They have a stock market that became a bubble and in dollar terms the stock market is no higher than in 2015! This year it peaked out in January in dollar terms and we are down from the January high in dollar terms. The other day we were down by 19% and at the present time by 17%. And this is because the financial sector essentially criticised the Reserve Bank of India under Rajan that kept money too tight for their view.

  • Reliance Defence could get just over 3 per cent of the Rs 30,000-crore Dassault Aviation offsets contract, contrary to the impression that it is the biggest beneficiary of the Rafale fighter jets deal. The joint venture, Dassault Reliance Aviation Limited (DRAL), will see an investment capped at €100 million (Rs 850 crore) for setting up a plant to manufacture parts for Falcon executive jets, ET has learnt. Additionally, a smaller investment would be made for a joint venture with avionics and radar manufacturer Thales, which is also setting up an assembly plant for radars adjacent to the DRAL complex in Nagpur, ET has been informed. Officials pointed out that offsets for Rafale are divided into four parts between Dassault (the integrator), Thales (radars and avionics), Safran (engines and electronics) and MBDA (weapons). Out of the total commitment of Rs 30,000 crore, Dassault Aviation has to invest in offsets to the tune of Rs 6,500 crore, according to Air Marshal R Nambiar, deputy chief of air staff till last month. Dassault Aviation chief Eric Trappier has now come on record to say that its joint venture with Reliance Defence is geared towards meeting about 10 per cent of this offset obligation for the Rafale fighter jet deal. “Dassault Aviation decided to set up DRAL joint venture with Reliance and build a plant in Nagpur, which should enable us to meet about 10 per cent of the offset obligations. We are in negotiations with about a hundred Indian companies and partnerships have already been concluded with about thirty of them,” the executive said in an interview to AFP. ET has learnt that though the offset plans have not been formalised and presented to the government yet, there is still time as per the policy till October 2019 to share details with the ministry â€" the share of offsets for Reliance Defence in the deal could be capped at about 3 per cent of the total offsets. Other beneficiaries of the contract include the Defence Research and Development Organisation for which negotiations are on to revive the Kaveri jet engine programme. French manufacturer Safran is in talks with the Indian team to work out modalities, including work share and transfer of technology that could be counted towards meeting the offset obligations. Safran is also likely to discharge a part of its commitments through Hindustan Aeronautics Limited with which it has a joint venture to manufacture helicopter engines. Thales is likely to have defence public sector unit Bharat Electronics Limited as a major offset partner, besides Larsen and Toubro.
  • Private sector lender ICICI Bank Tuesday said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved Sandeep Bakshi's appointment as Managing Director and CEO of the bank for three years. After resignation of Chanda Kochhar, who was facing inquiry, earlier this month, the bank's board had elevated Chief Operating Officer (COO) Bakshi as the new managing director and CEO for five years until October 3, 2023, subject to regulatory and other approvals. "We wish to inform you that RBI vide its letter no DBR Appt. No. 3065 /08.88.001/2018-19 dated October 15, 2018 has approved the appointment of Sandeep Bakhshi as Managing Director and CEO of the Bank for a period of three years with effect from October 15, 2018," ICICI Bank said in a BSE filing. The private sector lender said Bakshi had joined the group in 1986. He was appointed as the MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company on August 1, 2010 where under his leadership the company redesigned various products, re-engineered the distribution architecture and made significant improvement in productivity. He successfully led the listing of the company. Facing enquiry over the charges of nepotism and conflict of interest, ICICI Bank's former MD and CEO Chanda Kochhar had quit the bank on October 4, six months before her current tenure was to end. Kochhar, 57, also resigned from all subsidiaries of the bank, including ICICI Securities where she had sought reappointment as the chairperson.
  • Realty developer Kanakia Group has acquired a nearly 15-acre prime land parcel in the Powai suburb of Mumbai for around Rs 850 crore from Skyline Mansions and the private equity fund promoted by Anand Jain, two people with direct knowledge of the development said. With this transaction, the Urban Infrastructure Venture Capital, floated by Anand Jain’s Jai Corp with Reliance Industries as an anchor investor, has made a complete exit from the project in which it held 33% stake.Urban Infrastructure had teamed up with Skyline Mansions in 2007 after the acquisition of the land and was looking to develop a residential project. It had invested in this alliance through its India fund Urban Infrastructure Opportunities Fund.“The 15-acre project has development potential of nearly 2 million sq ft. While certain approvals are already in place, Kanakia will be responsible for further permissions now as the land parcel has been sold on a as-is-what-is basis,” said one of the persons mentioned above.Kanakia Group had entered into an agreement with Urban Infrastructure to acquire the latter’s stake and has now concluded the deal at around ?250 crore. Of the total consideration paid to the fund, the developer had paid ?60 crore at the time of entering into the pact two years ago.In addition to this, Kanakia has also acquired balance 66.66% project stake owned by Skyline Ventures for over ?600 crore taking the total deal value to ?850 crore.ET’s email queries to Urban Infrastructure Venture Capital and buyer Kanakia Group remained unanswered until the time of going to press. Skyline Mansions’ director Narottam Sharma confirmed the transaction without elaborating on details. The Kanakia Group is looking to develop a mid-income premium residential project and has started the process to secure approvals. Currently, under-construction property rates in the vicinity are in the range of Rs 18,000 to Rs 20,000 per sq ft.After a long gap, land transactions have started to gain momentum in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the country’s most expensive property market. Over the last few years, outright land transactions were overtaken by joint developments and joint ventures as that would enable the developer lower capital involvement and a possible revenue upside to the landlord once the project is ready. In May, realty developer Kalpataru emerged as the highest bidder for 8-acre land parcel of Mondelez India or former Cadbury India on Thane’s Pokharan Road 1with its bid price of Rs 282 crore. Kanakia Group itself entered into an agreement with India Tube Mills to buy its seven-acre land parcel in Vikhroli suburb of Mumbai for Rs 363 crore.

  • WhatsApp’s recent move to store payments data in India might not be enough for it to roll out full-scale operations on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), people aware of the matter in the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said.According to these officials, WhatsApp is only ‘mirroring’ the payments data in India â€" in other words, a copy or copies of the same data is/are stored overseas too. The RBI had mandated in April that data of financial institutions should be stored only in India.Currently, the payments business of WhatsApp is restricted to 1 million people and it needs final approvals from the NPCI and the RBI before it can be opened up to everyone who uses the messaging application. Last week, the company announced that it has built a system that stores payments-related data locally in India. It did not clarify whether the payments data is being kept ‘only’ in India or elsewhere too.“As things stand now, they have done only data-mirroring, which is not enough, according to the RBI circular,” said a senior official in the NPCI. The umbrella payments body held a meeting on Monday to finalise the next course of action on players like Google Pay, which too stores data outside India. Google CEO Sundar Pichai had written to India’s IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad asking for free flow of data, arguing that it would benefit Indian startups. A final decision on the case could not be arrived at on Monday, people aware of the discussions said.Emails sent to spokespeople of WhatsApp India and NPCI did not elicit any response.
