- More than 100 years ago, a massive explosion ripped through the sky over the Tunguska region of Siberia, flattening trees nearly 31 miles around. The blast is thought to have been produced by a comet or asteroid hurtling through Earth's atmosphere at over 33,500 miles per hour, resulting in an explosion equal to 185 Hiroshima bombs as pressure and heat rapidly increased. But, with no impact crater and little evidence of such an object ever found, scientists remain perplexed as to what truly caused the event in which 'the sky was split in two.' In the image above, the affected area is shown in 2008, in colour, compared with a view from decades earlier. Pictures from 1908, bottom right, and 1938, top right, reveal how the trees were ripped from the ground.

- One of the uncomfortable facts of life is that some countries — and within the U.S., some states — are more violent than others. Figuring out what makes societies and communities more violent is a big-time quest for social scientists, since if you know what leads to killing, you'll have a better shot at defusing it. Drawing on a host of studies, a new paper (PDF) in Behavioral and Brain Sciences -- lead-authored by Paul A. M. Van Lange of Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam -- proposes a model for understanding violence with the only somewhat forced-sounding acronym CLASH, short for CLimate, Aggression, and Self-control in Humans.
- Our brain does not work like a typical computer memory storing just ones and zeroes: thanks to a much larger variation in memory states, it can calculate faster consuming less energy. Scientists have now developed a ferro-electric material with a memory function resembling synapses and neurons in the brain, resulting in a multistate memory.

The first experiment will use a net to capture a target (top right) in the form of a small CubeSat launched from the main satellite. A second experiment will see the satellite trial a harpoon to snag debris (top left). This approach of spear-fishing for space trash would again require precise targeting and tracking of the debris. The final approach involves the use of a drag sail (bottom left), whereby future satellites could be fitted with an inflatable boom on which the sail in unfurled. The sail would effectively act as a space parachute, increasing the drag and causing the satellite to fall out of orbit and burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere.

However, both Martian researchers are sure this is 'definitely not a rock'.

The orbit of such a planet had been expected to be unstable, probably resulting in the planet being quickly ejected from the system. But somehow this one survives. This unexpected observation suggests that such systems may actually be more common than previously thought.
