What will get cheaper as revised GST kicks in KOLKATA: White goods makers such as LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Whirlpool, Godrej and IFB among others, have decided on a 7.8-9% price cut in small screen televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, kitchen appliances and electric personal care gadgets to pass on the 10% reduction on GST rates on these products, bringing prices to almost two-year low, four industry executives said. While companies such as LG, Samsung and Whirlpool have announced the price cuts to the trade, some were waiting till late Thursday evening since the governmentâs notification was not yet out till then. The price reduction is to be effective from Friday. The government had last week dropped GST on an array of consumer electronic products from 28% to 18%, which made the total taxation amount even lower than what it was during the earlier VAT regime, when it was around 26.5%. The countryâs largest home appliances maker LG Indiaâs business head (refrigerator) Vijay Babu said the company is going to pass on the full GST reduction benefit to consumers with effect from July 27. Other companies too are passing on the full benefit. 65155170 Trump's trade moves have got China worried BEIJING: A senior Chinese government official predicted on Thursday that aggressive trade actions imposed by US President Donald Trump would result in bankruptcy for many Chinese companies if immediate measures were not taken to check the fallout.âItâs hard to predict how this trade war will develop and to what extent,â Du Wanhua, deputy director of an advisory committee to the Supreme Peopleâs Court, said. âBut one thing is sure: if the US imposes tariffs on Chinese imports following an order of $60 billion, $200 billion, or even $500 billion, many Chinese companies will go bankrupt.âTrump has imposed a heavy 25% duty on Chinese exports worth $34 billion and has threatened a 10% duty increase on another set of exports worth $200 billion. Washington sees it as an effort to counter the high trade deficit caused by Chinese exports by making them dearer in the US.China has taken some retaliatory steps but many Chinese intellectuals are not happy with the official response to a situation that might be heading towards a trade war.Du said the judiciary must be prepared to face bankruptcy-related cases and deal with complexities it has not handled earlier. âPreparedness ensures success. Unpreparedness spells failure,â he said. âOur courts need to look into these possible Chinese corporate bankruptcies as early as possible.âCuriously, the strong response comes from a Communist Party official connected to the Supreme Court who expressed his views in an article in the Peopleâs Daily, the partyâs official organ. It did not come from someone linked to the economic ministries. On Tuesday, Huang Libin, a spokesman for the ministry of industry and information technology, had said there had yet to be any significant impact on industrial output.âWe hear complaints from (Chinese) companies that US clients have requested a suspension of orders and deliveries, but so far it has had only a limited impact on the industrial sector,â he said.Bankruptcy cases created by the trade dispute would be very different from those involving the liquidation of âzombieâ companies as several of the firms at risk were promising hi-tech companies. The term âzombieâ is widely used for underproductive and outmoded state-owned giants. Income tax return filing deadline extended to August 31 NEW DELHI: The finance ministry in a tweet has announced the extension of income tax return (ITR) filing deadline by a month to August 31. The tweet says "Upon consideration of the matter, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the âDue Dateâ for filing of Income Tax Returns from 31st July, 2018 to 31st August, 2018 in respect of the said categories of taxpayers."65152496 Dominoâs in trouble for not passing on GST cuts NEW DELHI: Pizza chain Dominoâs has got caught in the crosshairs of anti-profiteering authorities for not passing on a cut in goods and services tax to consumers. Anti-profiteering provisions make it compulsory for companies to pass on any benefits from a lower GST rate to consumers. The Directorate General of Anti-Profiteering found that Dominoâs had not reduced the prices of all its food products after the GST Council cut the tax rate on restaurants last November, and instead passed on the benefit selectively. âAn investigation report has been issued,â said a government official privy to the development. In India, Jubilant FoodWorks operates Dominoâs restaurants under a franchise deal with American chain Domino's Pizza Inc. AJubilant spokesperson said the company believes it passed on the benefits. âThe company has received a copy of the investigation report submitted by the Director General Anti-Profiteering (DG) to the National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA). However, JFL believes it has passed on the benefit on account of reduction of GST rates to the customers and accordingly will represent its case before NAA,â the spokesperson said in an email response to ETâs questions. 65154952 'Mastercard's investment in India during 2014-19 to stand at $1 bn' Global payments major Mastercard on Thursday said its cumulative investment in India for the period of 2014-19 would stand at Rs 6,500 crore or around $1 billion to promote digital transactions in the country.Started in 2014, the local investment includes acquisition of new offices in Bengaluru and Gurugram and a Mastercard Innovation Lab and operations hub in Pune, said a Mastercard statement."Committed to a model based on local investment, Mastercard will have invested approximately Rs 6,500 crore ($1 billion) between 2014 and 2019 to promote digital transactions in India," it said.As per the statement, Mastercard has grown its India workforce from 29 in 2013 to around 2,000 currently, which is 14 percent of the global Mastercard workforce, and the largest outside the United States.Out of total Rs 6,500 crore, around 75 per cent has been invested so far.Porush Singh, country corporate officer, India and Division President, South Asia, Mastercard, said: "We strongly support the government's push towards establishing India as a less-cash society and have continuously invested in this vision."Porush added: "80-85 per cent of the fees in debit card transactions go to financial institutions and other processors located in India for their services and will stay entirely within the Indian economy. Only 15-20 per cent will come to Mastercard as compensation for our network services. It is just between 12 and 15 paise in an INR 100 transaction. We stand absolutely committed to India's future. We firmly believe that the success of the Indian economy is the success of Mastercard. en-gb 2018-07-27T00:16:19+05:30 - à´à´°àµà´£à´¾à´¨à´¿à´§à´¿à´¯àµà´àµ à´à´°àµà´àµà´¯ നിലയിൽ à´à´¶à´àµà´Â
