Donald Trump to test KM Birla's mettle Last year, the Trump administration blocked a Chinese company from buying an Ohio-based aluminum maker, Aleris, citing concerns about national security. Will President Donald Trump and his advisers feel differently about an Indian company purchasing Aleris instead? On Thursday, the Aditya Birla Group, announced that its aluminum and copper subsidiary had struck a deal to buy Aleris for $2.6 billion, including the assumption of existing debt. The transaction would make the Birla subsidiary, called Hindalco, the second-largest aluminum producer in the world by volume, after China Hongqiao Group.Under federal rules, the deal requires approval by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, a secretive panel of government officials that advises the president on whether to stop acquisitions of US companies by foreigners. In recent years, the panel, known as CFIUS, has been particularly skeptical of Chinese companies seeking to buy U.S. businesses in important industries like computer chips and financial services.Last summer, CFIUS refused to sign off on a proposed $2.3 billion purchase of Aleris by a company controlled by the Chinese metals magnate Liu Zhongtian. That effectively killed the deal and pushed Alerisâ investors â" principally Oaktree Capital Management, Apollo Global Management and Bain Capital â" to find another buyer. The Indian transaction could be one of the first reviewed under a new law, expected to be passed by Congress soon, to broaden the powers of CFIUS.Hindalco executives said they did not anticipate running into the same difficulties that the Chinese buyer had encountered. But Kumar Mangalam Birla, who leads the Aditya Birla Group, noted that Trump is unpredictable.âWe donât know how he thinks,â Birla said at a news conference in Mumbai, where his company has its headquarters. The Trump administration has been trying to build a stronger relationship with India as a counterweight to China. At the same time, trade tensions have been rising.Trump has lashed out at Indiaâs high tariffs on products like Harley-Davidson motorcycles. His recent imposition of tariffs on imported steel and aluminum has hurt Indian producers, prompting India to respond with higher tariffs on U.S. almonds, apples, shrimp, and iron and steel products.Hindalco already has a large U.S. subsidiary, Novelis, that is based in Atlanta and would merge with Aleris.Novelis dominates the aluminum can business and is a major supplier to the auto industry. Aleris, which is based in suburban Cleveland, would bring strong positions in aluminum for buildings and airplanes and a newly expanded factory in Lewisport, Kentucky, that serves automakers.âWeâre investing in the U.S.,â Devinder Ahuja, the chief financial officer of Novelis, said in an interview. âWeâre creating jobs in the U.S. Thatâs what the U.S. administration wants.âAhuja said that Novelis would continue with Alerisâ previously announced expansion plans and did not envision layoffs beyond areas of clear duplication like top management and the corporate back office.Hindalco also intends to bring some of Alerisâ advanced technology back to India to improve its domestic operations and better serve the local auto and construction markets.By owning a U.S. aluminum maker like Aleris, Hindalco would benefit from Trumpâs 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports, although Aleris also has operations in Europe and China that could suffer if current tensions devolve into a full-scale trade war. Feature phones strike back with a vengeance Neo is in his office when suddenly his phone rings. He pulls out a beautiful sleek Nokia slider phone and picks up the call from Morpheus. That famous scene from the 1999 Keanu Reeves hit made the âMatrix Phoneâ a household name. Eighteen years and many smartphones later, the Matrix phone is back in a new avatar -- as Nokia 8110 4G âBanana Phoneâ â" and so is the trend for feature phones. These not-so-smart phones are making a comeback, not just India, but in many parts of the world. According to Counterpoint Research, global smartphone market grew only 2% in 2017 and feature phones seem to be making a comeback. Market for feature phones rose 5% to 450 million devices. While it was the year of slowest growth for smartphones, it was the first time feature phones recorded growth in years. Though India has given a big push to feature phones with JioPhone, the market is growing across Asia, Africa and even Europe.According to International Data Corporation, smartphone growth in Africa shrunk from double digits to single digit while feature phones captured more than half of the market at 56%. In central and eastern Europe, feature phone market grew 7%.India drove the feature phone growth with JioPhone of Reliance Jio. Feature phones pushed out iOS phones to grab the second position after Android phones in the mobile phone market. The trend suggests how iOS and Android market in India dipped and a new entrant, JioPhone, emerged riding on a new operating system. The feature phones have already beaten iOS with 15% market share in India while iOS remains at 9.6%. While Indian feature phone market was driven by JioPhone, it was Nokia that became the disruptor in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) with a 13% increase in shipment. The main reason behind this surge was Nokiaâs brand new feature phones launched in 2017.While Android and iOS were catering to the needs of the masses, consumer preference shifted back to basics. According to a survey by Kantar IMRB, Indian feature phone users spend four times more time watching TV on their phones compared to the national average. That's beating smartphone at its own game. The affluent return to feature phoneBreaking the general stereotype that feature phone buyers usually belong to mid- or low-level socioeconomic background, the survey found that 75% of respondents belonged to high socioeconomic classes. The survey found more affluent users of feature phones in the north and south regions. Many believe this return to feature phones can be due to nostalgia. Almost half of all respondents IMRB spoke to were aged 35 years or older. They could be the same people who must have used feature phones back in their time when smartphones were not available. This shows nostalgia could be a big factor in feature phones staging a come back. It is usually believed feature phone users are actually smartphone aspirants but cannot afford one at the time, but the IMRB report differs. The report says only 15% of the respondents they surveyed definitely intended to switch to a smartphone. This explains customer satisfaction with the new feature phone which now have almost everything a smartphone has at a pocket-friendly price. How tech smartens up feature phones Smartphones made feature phones obsolete because of new technology that gave a smartphone user everything a computer could. But a new operating system has helped dumb feature phones acquire a few vital smart features. KaiOS, a Linux-based mobile operating system that power JioPhone too, can revolutionised the mobile phone market. A KaiOS-enabled feature phone can give you 4G connectivity, Google and social media apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook. Jiophone goes a step further by now planning to provide voice assistance and video-calling features. If feature phones are no longer dumb, they can see explosive growth. KaiOS also powers latest feature phones of Nokia, AT&T and T-Mobile among many others. KaiOS has certainly made feature phones more useful and desirable. The war will now be between smartphones and smart feature phones. Companies spot new potential in feature phone Many companies see growth in the feature phone market and are backing KaiOS. Even Googleâ"which pioneered the smartphone revolution with its Android operating systemâ"sees a new potential in feature phones. It recently invested $22 million in KaiOS. Reliance too has bought 16% stake in it for $7 million. Major mobile manufacturers are now in the race to tap this new emerging market. KaiOS is working closely with manufacturers such as Nokia, TCL, HMD Global, Reliance Jio, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile and Micromax. A sign of feature phone market hotting up is Nokia and Reliance Jio, both using KaiOS, eyeing a big chunk of users in India. Jaitley sees GST rate cut on cement, ACs, TVs Union Minister Arun Jaitley today exuded confidence that GST rates on cement, ACs and televisions will be cut as tax revenues increase, and only luxury and sin goods will attract the highest slab of 28 per cent.In a Facebook post, Jaitley termed the pre-GST indirect tax regime, during which most of the household items attracted a levy of 31 per cent, as "Congress Legacy Tax".The past one year, he added, has seen rate reduction in 384 commodities.Goods and Services Tax (GST), which subsumed 17 local taxes, was rolled out on July 1, 2017."Today, the 28 per cent category is being phased out. Bulk of these items remaining in this category are only luxury items or sin goods. The other items outside the luxury-sin goods category are cement, air-conditioners, large screen televisions and a handful of others," Jaitley said."Hopefully, with further expansion of revenues, these few items may also witness a change of category. Thus within a record period of thirteen months, the GST Council has almost phased out the 28 percent category. It is only a matter of time that the final obituary of the 'Congress Legacy Tax' is written. Only the luxury-sin tax would remain," he said.Referring to services sector, he said 68 different categories of services have witnessed their rate reduction."The net revenue loss which Government have suffered on account of the reduction of tax on goods and services is about Rs 70,000 crore. Since State Governments have been guaranteed a 14 per cent increase over their pre-GST revenues for the first five years, this burden has entirely been borne from the share of the Central Government," Jaitley said. The tax reduction has reduced the cost to the consumers, increased his purchasing capacity and added to the increased consumption in the economy. He said taxes on all household items stand reduced from 28 per cent to 18 per cent and 12 per cent."All items of construction, except cement, stands reduced. Most white goods stand reduced. There is no better opportunity for consumers to make purchases than in the environment which the GST has created. It is an opportunity to celebrate the biggest tax reform since Independence, which has replaced 'Congress Legacy Tax' with a 'good and simple tax'," Jaitley said. The GST Council in its meeting last week had decided to reduce taxes on 88 items, like sanitary napkins, fridge, small screen TV, washing machine, footwear, among others. The new tax rates became effective from today. As of today, only 35 goods, including cement, automobile parts, tyres, automobile equipments, motor vehicles, yachts, aircrafts, aerated drinks, betting and demerit items like tobacco, cigarette and pan masala, attract highest GST rate of 28 per cent. SIAM calls for early resolution of transporters' strike Automobile industry body SIAM today asked all stakeholders to resolve the ongoing transporters' strike, saying it has severely impacted the sector in the last few days.Companies such as Tata Motors, Ford India and Skoda Auto India have had to adjust production as the strike affected both parts supplies and distribution of vehicles."Our members are facing unprecedented crisis as it is affecting the movement of vehicles and components supply because of the strike," Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Deputy Director General Sugato Sen said in a statement.Stating that the strike has 'severely impacted' the automobile sector in the last few days, he said, many of domestic consignments are held up on roads, which has disrupted the supply chain and completely derailed the production at assembly lines of some companies."Even the exports have taken a hit, resulting in losses for most of our members, who are unable to fulfil their export commitments," he said, adding "SIAM would request all stakeholders to resolve the issue before the situation deteriorates."The nationwide strike called by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), which claims support of 93 lakh truckers, has entered the eighth day today. The transporters' demands include a reduction in central and state taxes by getting diesel under the GST so that price of the deregulated commodity can be reduced. Walmart plans to create 30,000 jobs in UP Tagging Uttar Pradesh as a priority growth state, Walmart India said it expects to create at least 30,000 local jobs by setting up 15 stores in the state. Walmart India, which already runs four Cash and Carry stores in UP, recently launched a fulfilment centre (FC) in Lucknow, which created 1,500 new skilled jobs. In the UP Investment Summit held earlier this year, Walmart India had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government to open 15 wholesale Cash and Carry stores. "Each store is likely to create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, thereby generating at least 30,000 local jobs in the state," Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Rajneesh Kumar who represented Walmart India in the Investment Summit, told from Mumbai. Walmart India will attend the ground breaking ceremony here on Sunday where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will take stock of the progress in implementation of the MoUs signed during the UP Investment Summit. The mega ground breaking event is billed to see launch of various projects worth Rs 60,000 crore by large companies like Walmart, Reliance, Adani, Mahindra, PayTm, TCS and GAIL. When PM Modi will lay one brick here in Lucknow, ground-breaking for the projects would be done digitally in the districts concerned, said UP Minister for Industries Satish Mahana. Kumar, who will be present at the ground breaking ceremony on Sunday, said, "UP is a priority growth state for us. Walmart is making deep investment in agriculture supply chain, enhancing small farmers capabilities and sourcing from them for its stores in UP and other states." Through our Cash and Carry stores and FC in Lucknow, we are not only creating new jobs, but supporting and enabling small kiranas, farmers and local SME suppliers to succeed, he said. "We are delighted to bring best practices in retail to our kiranas, best practices in farming and food safety to our farmers and SME suppliers," he added. We are confident of making a difference to the lives of lakhs of farmers, kiranas and local suppliers as we grow our business in line with government vision of bringing inclusive prosperity, Kumar said. In addition to existing stores and FCs at Lucknow, Agra and Meerut, the company is bringing its wholesale Cash and Carry stores to Varanasi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Gorakhpur and other cities. Kumar said these stores can also become a great platform for saree weavers in Varanasi and many such artisans who struggle for market access. "The company can help create an ecosystem for these artisans just like it has been able to do with small farmers and other small suppliers in UP and other states," he pointed out. Walmart recently acquired 77 per cent stake in Flipkart. In future, it is highly likely that it will leverage Flipkart to give wider visibility of such artisan/weaver clusters. This will not only improve lives if these neglected groups, but also provide visibility to their products to millions of consumers directly, Kumar said. Walmart runs Sunhara Prayas in UP to support farmers in enhancing their productivity and income by connecting them to the market. As long as growth is there, valuation is not a big concern Post Aleris, Hindalco largest aluminium co in world: Birla China, Russia, Iran pose grave cyber espionage threat to US: Report WASHINGTON: The US has identified China, Russia and Iran as "aggressive" and "capable" collectors of its sensitive economic information, trade secrets and technologies, particularly in cyberspace. The National Counterintelligence and Security Center in its annual report 'Foreign Economic Espionage in Cyber' released yesterday said countries with closer ties to the US have also conducted cyber espionage to obtain US technology."Despite advances in cybersecurity, cyber espionage continues to offer threat actors a relatively low-cost, high-yield avenue of approach to a wide spectrum of intellectual property," it said."We anticipate that China, Russia, and Iran will remain aggressive and capable collectors of sensitive US economic information and technologies, particularly in cyberspace. All will almost certainly continue to deploy significant resources and a wide array of tactics to acquire intellectual property and proprietary information," said the report.China, according to the report, has expansive efforts in place to acquire US technology to include sensitive trade secrets and proprietary information. It continues to use cyber espionage to support its strategic development goals--science and technology advancement, military modernisation, and economic policy objectives, the report said."China's cyberspace operations are part of a complex, multipronged technology development strategy that uses licit and illicit methods to achieve its goals," it said, noting that Chinese companies and individuals often acquire US technology for commercial and scientific purposes. At the same time, the Chinese government seeks to enhance its collection of US technology by enlisting the support of a broad range of actors spread throughout its government and industrial base, it said. The report running into more than 15 pages said that while next generation technologies will introduce a range of qualitative advances in data storage, analytics, and computational capacity, they also present potential vulnerabilities for which the cybersecurity community remains largely unprepared. The solidification of cloud computing over the past decade as a global information industry standard, coupled with the deployment of technologies such as artificial intelligence and internet if things, will introduce unforeseen vulnerabilities to US networks, it said.Noting that cloud networks and Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure are rapidly expanding the global online operational space, the report said threat actors have already demonstrated how cloud can be used as a platform for cyber exploitation."As IoT and AI applications expand to empower everything from 'smart homes' to 'smart cities' billions of potentially unsecured network nodes will create an incalculably larger exploitation space for cyber threat actors," it said.Building an effective response demands understanding economic espionage as a worldwide, multi-vector threat to the integrity of both the US economy and global trade.Of the view that China will continue to be a threat to US proprietary technology and intellectual property through cyber-enabled means or other methods, the report warned that if this threat is not addressed, it could erode America's long-term competitive economic advantage. An aggressive and capable collector of sensitive US technologies, Russia uses cyberspace as one of many methods for obtaining the necessary know-how and technology to grow and modernise its economy, it said.Russia uses cyber operations as an instrument of intelligence collection to inform its decision making and benefit its economic interests, it added."We believe that Iran will continue working to penetrate US networks for economic or industrial espionage purposes," it said adding that Iran's economy--still driven heavily by petroleum revenue--will depend on growth in nonoil industries."We expect Iran will continue to exploit cyberspace to gain advantages in these industries. Iran will remain committed to using its cyber capabilities to attain key economic goals, primarily by continuing to steal intellectual property, in an effort to narrow the science and technology gap between Iran and Western countries," the report said.Further new and enhanced cyber, national security, and import laws in effect in foreign countries are posing an increasing risk to US technology and propriety information, it said. For example, in 2017, China and Russia aggressively enforced laws that bolstered their domestic companies at the expense of US companies and also might allow their companies access to US intellectual property and proprietary information, it added. en-gb 2018-07-27T16:33:51+05:30 - In an exclusive survey on Indian coders, TechGig found out that nearly 39% coders learned to code at the age of 15-20 years, and more than 45% programmers st...
