2094. Are rich people mean? Study seems to say soBy Uma ShashikantWe were out shopping when the store assistant began to shower disproportionate attention on a fellow shopper, who was simply dressed and quiet in demeanor. She decided quickly, bought a few very high value items and left the store. Piqued, we asked the assistant how he figured among so many shoppers which one was rich. His answer was simple: She did not care to look at or be interested in anyone else in the shop, but focused only on the goods.A growing body of research says the rich tend to display distinct behaviour that can be mostly characterised as mean. Since much of this behaviour is implicit and subconscious, calling them out or nudging them to correct it can actually make it better. In a world where income inequalities are only rising, and where amassing money is an avowed objective pursued without a tinge of regret, it might make sense to pause and ask if we are turning out to be rich and somewhat soulless.Paul Piff at the University of California, Berkeley, ran a series of experiments to observe how those who have more money behave in a given situation, compared to those with less. He found that players in a rigged game of Monopoly that awarded them twice the money as their opponent, and let them roll both dices, began to display behaviours that were dominant, loud and aggressive. They moved their coins around the board with a thud, ate more of the free snack, and spoke loudly. At the end of the game, they attributed their success to their strategy and skill, completely sidestepping the fact that they entered the game with privilege. Researchers explain that the rich tend to rationalise their advantage, and believe that they deserved it. They pursue their self-interest and moralise greed easily. The misuse of power and privilege and growing unethicality in societies is increasingly seen as arising from such attitudes.Pia Dietz and Eric Knowles studied how social class differences influence how we process information. They confirm the simple perception of our store assistant. Poorer people are more likely to notice, engage with, pay attention to and empathise with other humans, compared to the rich. How relevant others are to our goals and motivation is what drives our interaction with others. With wealth and privilege comes independence. The poor on the other hand view others as potentially rewarding, threatening or worth paying attention to. Dietze and Knowles call this the motivational difference. The lack of empathy and compassion in the rich as compared to the poor is also well documented. In an experiment, the rich took twice the amount of candies meant for kids as compared to the poor! Micheal Kraus of Yale University who specialises in the study of hierarchies, points out that the poor are likely to more accurately judge the emotions of other persons; make more accurate inferences about such emotions; and have higher empathic accuracy as compared to the rich. The rich are not very good at reading emotions of the others and lack empathy and compassion. This deficit stems primarily from their lack of dependence on others.Wealth also clouds moral judgment and triggers the propensity to cheat or break the law. A study of the attitude of car owners showed that more expensive cars were more likely to block and cross other cars, and less likely to yield to pedestrians who had the right of way. The rich paid lower taxes, and were more prone to evade taxes and hide their wealth; the rich were more likely to adopt questionable accounting and business practices and sidestep ethical practices; and the rich were more likely to use their powers to perpetuate illegal and unlawful activities.Igor Grossman proposes the idea of wise reasoning, a pragmatic approach to problem solving that is influenced by life experiences and social contexts. It considers the perspectives of others, recognises the likelihood of change, understands how a conflict will unfold and sees the need for compromise and seeks conflict resolution. Grossman’s research shows that the rich have a lower tendency for wise reasoning as compared to the poor.Privilege can create a sense of entitlement The rich worry more about how other view them, and are likely to consistently blame others for things going wrong. One of the reasons for poor quality personal, family and romantic relationships among the rich as compared to the poor is the former’s inability to apply themselves with flexibility, empathy and open mindedness when faced with uncertainties in personal relationships. The poor seem more willing to compromise or change their positions.Rich does not equal mean, and that is not what research points out. There are implicit biases that develop as one becomes wealthy, and self-awareness, nudges in the right direction, and greater social engagement with eclectic groups are all steps to keep the negative tendencies in check. Not all rich can be grouped in one stereotypical class eitherâ€"there are various psychological classifications of the inheritors, the first time rich, the altruists and the firmly grounded wealthy folks. The moral corrosion that wealth seems to encourage stems from a subconscious sense of entitlement and a distinctly different code of conduct and norm that privilege creates in the mind of the rich. The ancient philosophers and thinkers who bemoaned the pursuit of wealth might have had these corrosive effects in mind when they called upon the rich to donate and give away their wealth; or asked societies to focus on need rather than greed. While we rejected the socialistic model for its romanticised view of a shared society that did not create the incentives for wealth creation, we are now staring at the income inequalities created by the capitalistic model and its consequences on our morality, ethics and societal harmony. Many suggest charity as a great way to address this issue. But there is evidence that the poor are more generous than the rich. The intergenerational wealth transfer from the baby boomers that is now underway is seen as the single largest inheritance event that will produce too many privileged rich with possibly the behavioural limitations we just listed. What will we do with all the money we have is a question we all have to answer with an open heart and mind. Indulging the next generation and passing it on need not be the default option.(The writer is Chairperson, Centre for Investment Education and Learning.)
2095. The Indian who made Amazon Alexa what it isAlexa, who is your creator? "I was invented by Amazon." That's Alexa's normal response to the question. What she doesn't reveal is that the person who breathed life into Alexa, and led the technology side of the project almost from its inception five years ago, is Rohit Prasad, an engineer from Ranchi, Jharkhand.Prasad, together with his colleague Toni Reid who focuses on the consumer experience side, was No. 15 on Recode's list of 100 people in tech, business and media who mattered in 2017. Jeff Bezos, Susan Fowler, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook, Sundar Pichai, Elon Musk and Satya Nadella were among the 14 people ahead of him. Recode said Prasad and Reid had made Alexa a household name.Star Trek inspired Indian techie to create AlexaIndia-born Rohit Prasad was ranked No. 9 (and Reid No. 10) in Fast Company's 100 most creative people in business in 2017. Fast Company said Prasad and Reid had turned Alexa into a "category-defining consumer experience."Prasad still has family in Ranchi and visits the city once every year-and-a-half. Last week was one of those visits. On Thursday, he spent nearly an hour talking to on phone from the Jharkhand capital. "My dad used to work for Mecon, my grandad for HEC (Heavy Engineering Corp), so I have had three generations here," he says. He's the kind who makes you feel comfortable. "I still follow The Times of India. It's my No. 1 news source for understanding what's going on in India," was the second line of the conversation. Prasad studied at DAV High School. For engineering, he had multiple offers, including from IIT-Roorkee. He chose Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, in Ranchi. "I decided to stay closer home," he says.He completed his electronics & communication engineering in 1997, and then went to the Illinois Institute of Technology, US, for an MS in electrical engineering, where he did novel research in low bit-rate speech coding for wireless applications. That's probably where his interest in speech recognition began. For the next 14 years, he was at BBN Technologies, an R&D arm of defence company Raytheon. BBN was one of the founding sites of ARPANET, a predecessor of the internet. It was also one of the leading R&D sites for speech recognition, natural language understanding and machine learning in general, and Prasad was deputy manager for that business unit, leading a multidisciplinary team of researchers, developers, and program managers on large-scale government-and commercially-sponsored projects. In 2013, he moved to Amazon to use the same skills to try and revolutionise how customers interact with Amazon's products and services.
2096. Anil Ambani's sink-or-swim week has begunNEW DELHI: The department of telecommunications (DoT) has told Reliance Communications (RCom) its licences will be cancelled unless it pays `774 crore in bank guarantees towards upcoming spectrum payment dues, effectively threatening the telco’s deal to sell its airwaves to Reliance Jio Infocomm. The Anil Ambani-owned company, in a desperate rush to sell its wireless assets to Jio for over Rs 18,000 crore to pare its Rs 46,000-crore debt, has agreed to furnish the bank guarantee in four weeks, or by end of July, two persons familiar with the matter told ET. DoT’s showcause notice to RCom was sent in the last week of June.In its response, RCom pointed out that the department held bank guarantees worth Rs 2,540 crore which the Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) directed the DoT to return to the company.DoT, however, has stood its ground for the fresh bank guarantee, with officials saying the department intends to appeal the TDSAT ruling in the Supreme Court.“The notice was received and replied to earlier this month. The amount of `774 crore will be given in bank guarantees, but DoT also has to return the bank guarantees with them as ordered by TDSAT,” said one of the persons aware of the developments. In its reply, RCom pointed out that the bank guarantees were not interest-bearing and the delay in paying up was not causing any loss to DoT, the person said. But it wasn’t immediately clear from where RCom would arrange the funds, since it has been unable to repay thousands of crores owed to financial and operational creditors and is banking on asset sales for that. Once India’s second-largest telco, the company was unable to cope with brutal competition and forced to shut its wireless business at the end of 2017 amid rising debt, plunging revenue and widening losses. If the company doesn’t furnish the bank guarantees in time, the DoT is unlikely to approve of the company’s spectrum sale, delaying the deal with Jio.And if the licences are cancelledâ€"as the DoT has threatened to do citing breach of licence conditionsâ€"then the spectrum would be taken over by the department, rendering the RCom-Jio deal meaningless. The companies would need to then move court, in which case the whole deal would get delayed till a favourable order comes in.RCom declined to comment on the matter as of Sunday evening. Late December RCom unveiled an over Rs 18,000-crore deal to sell most of its wireless assetsâ€"including 122 MHz of spectrum, the fibre network, telecom towers and nodesâ€"to Jio. Besides, Canada’s Brookfield will purchase the company’s real estate in New Delhi and Chennai for about Rs 800 crore. Jio is also expected to take on deferred spectrum liabilitiesâ€"to be paid to the governmentâ€" and other dues of about Rs 8,000 crore. The funds are to be used to repay its 39 financial lenders. The deal, which was initially expected to close by March, ran into legal challenges, which have been cleared now. RCom expects it to now close in the July-September quarter. One of the sources quoted said that save a couple of major banks, the rest of the 39 banks that are financial creditors to RCom have given a no-objection certificate to the deal, and the rest would come through in a week's time.Earlier this month, the TDSAT had directed DoT to release Rs 2,000 crore worth of bank guarantees that RCom had provided in 2016 to secure the payment of spectrum-related charges. The company had approached the tribunal contesting the demand for bank guarantees for one-time spectrum charges (OTSC) due towards payment of market-linked prices for excess spectrum held by a telco, which DoT raised in late 2015.
2097. RCOM moves TDSAT against DoT notice, gets relief till Aug 10Reliance Communications (RCOM) has informed the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) that while Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has raised a demand for payment of Rs 774 crore on RCOM, the said payment has already been made to DoT vide the encashment of bank guarantees by DoT earlier.According to sources, RCOM therefore, only needs to renew the encashed bank guarantees, which will be payable only in 2019.Therefore, RCOM has sought some time and the TDSAT granted an extension on this till August 10, 2018.Sources said DoT is already sitting on excess bank guarantee encashment of around Rs 540 crore. Also, in a July 3, 2018 order, TDSAT has asked DoT to return additional bank guarantee of Rs 2,000 crore to RCOM.
2098. Panel explores justifiable options for stressed power projects of Tata, Essar, AdaniA three member panel constituted by the Gujarat government will meet stakeholders, including Tata, Adani and Essar, on Saturday in Mumbai to explore legal and commercial options for their three stressed power projects, according to a source. The committee, which has former Supreme Court Justice R K Agrawal, former RBI Deputy Governor S S Mundra and former Chairman of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission Pramod Deo on its board, met power developers as well as officials of procurer states, including Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana yesterday.SBI Capital Markets and state-run power giant NTPC are assisting the panel to submit its report to the state government within a period of two month. The panel was set up earlier this year. The source said that the panel is still working out a solution for these developers who are struggling with high cost of imported coal for their power plants, and called a meeting on July 28, 2018 in Mumbai to explore legal and commercial options which could be taken forward to procurers. The procurers and state government officials had expressed before the panel that they would like to have options which are commercially justifiable. The source further said that the procurers also wanted to have a cap on coal prices and now the panel has asked developer to submit their view on the ceiling on the dry fuel price.According to the source, the panel has informed the developers that the procurers will not be able to take care of past losses, while lenders are flexible in dealing with the developers' debt for the power plants so far. Now, the developers will have to submit their views by July 26, ahead of another round of meeting of the panel with all stakeholders on July 28, 2018.In April last year, the Supreme Court had ruled that power distribution firms like Adani Power Ltd and Tata Power Ltd cannot charge "compensatory tariff" from consumers and set aside the appellate tribunal's judgement in this regard.Tata Power's wholly owned subsidiary Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd and Adani Power had originally moved the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), seeking higher tariff on the grounds that their input costs had gone up due to rupee devaluation and higher costs of coal imported from Indonesia, owing to a regulation passed by the Southeast Asian nation. The apex court did not agree with the contentions of these firms, which referred to the findings of the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity that rise in coal price consequent to change in the Indonesian law was a factor that entitled them to claim compensatory tariff. While setting aside the appellate tribunal's judgement as well as the CERC's order, a bench of Justices P C Ghose and R F Nariman had said that an unexpected rise in coal price would not absolve the firms from adhering to the contract as they had knowingly taken the risk while submitting their bids.In June last year, Tata Power had offered to sell 51 per cent stake in its 4,000 MW Mundra power project for Rupee 1 to procurer states like Gujarat, which buy electricity from it, to tide over the financial crisis.Similar offers were also given by Adani Power and Essar Power to sell their stakes to procures for Rupee one in 4,620 MW power plant located at Mundra and 1,320 MW power plant at Salaya near Jamnagar in Gujarat, respectively.
