  216. PNB gets Rs 2,816 crore as part of government's capital infusion planNew Delhi, July 23 () State-owned PNB today said it has received Rs 2,816 crore as capital infusion from the government via preferential allotment of equity shares. "The bank, as per...Department of Financial Services notification, has received amount of capital infusion of Rs 2,816 crore towards contribution of the central government," PNB said in a regulatory filing. The preferential allotment of equity shares to government will be made after completing the process of regulatory approvals, Punjab National Bank said. Allahabad Bank had informed last week that it received Rs 1,790 crore as capital infusion from the government. The government has approved capital infusion in five public sector lenders. The other three in this pack are Andhra Bank -- Rs 2,019 crore, Indian Overseas Bank -- Rs 2,157 crore and Corporation Bank -- Rs 2,555 crore. It is also likely that 2-3 more banks may be added to the list. The government had announced Rs 2.11 lakh crore capital infusion programme for public sector banks (PSBs) last October. 217. Bullish bets on crude oil cool as volatility refuses to die downBy Navneet DamaniOil prices finished higher, but suffered third weekly decline after comments by Saudi Arabia on OPEC production and Norway restarting the Knarr oil field. But the positive data from the US supported crude prices. The trade tensions between the US and China stoked fears of damage to their economies and commodity demand. The fears of escalating trade spat between Washington and Beijing could hit demand, particularly if Chinese growth is affected, which also weighed on prices. Meanwhile, US energy companies this week cut oil rigs by the most since March as the rate of growth has slowed over the past month or so with recent declines in crude prices. Drillers cut five oil rigs in the week to July 20, bringing the total oil rig count down to 858. The resumption of Libyan exports allows the return of as much as 8,50,000 bpd of crude into international markets, which overshadowed the bullish news of declining oil supplies from Venezuela and Iraq. For Libya, just a few days after it opened its eastern port to start production, the NOC declared force majeure on crude oil loadings at the Zawiya port, following a weekend attack and abduction of oil workers at the Sharara oil field that had cut production at the site to 125,000 bpd. Production at one of the country’s largest oil fields, Sharara, was expected to drop by 160,000 bpd after oil workers were abducted on Saturday and oil wells closed as a precaution.Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia energy minister announced that the kingdom will reduce crude oil exports by 1,00,000 barrels a day and there will be substantial stockpile decline due to robust demand in second half of the year. He also said concerns that Saudi Arabia and its partners are moving to substantially oversupply the market are without basis. On the data front, the EIA reported a large increase in imports that lead to a larger than expected build in crude oil inventories, which was somewhat offset by draws in gasoline. Refinery operations continued to slip, as it appears that product stock levels are high enough to last through the summer, given the flat demand for gasoline. Prices at the pump need to decline to increase demand. The crude oil imports averaged 9.1 million bpd last week, up by 1,635,000 barrels per day from the previous week. This past month, imports averaged 8.5 million barrels per day, 8.1 per cent more than the same period last year. Distillate fuel imports averaged 1,40,000 barrels per day last week. The EIA reported that crude oil inventories increased by 5.8 million barrels from the previous week. This compared with expectations that they would increase by 3.5 million barrels. Gasoline inventories decreased by 3.2 million barrels last week and are about 5 per cent above the five-year average for this time of year. Distillate fuel inventories decreased by 0.4 million barrels last week and are about 13 per cent below five-year average for this time of year. Total petroleum inventories increased by 6 million barrels last week.US crude oil production last week hit 11 million barrels per day (bpd) for the first time in the nation's history. The gains represent a rapid increase in output, as the data, if confirmed by monthly figures, put the United States as the second-largest producer of crude oil, just behind Russia, which was producing 11.2 million bpd in early July. Elsewhere, for Norway, its drilling rigs workers have agreed to end their industrial action after the union representing 1,600 striking employees reached a deal with the group acting for their employers. The strike led to the shutting down of the Knarr field with daily output of 23,900 barrels of mostly oil, but also natural gas liquids and natural gas.The news of the US releasing its US SPR (Strategic Petroleum Reserve) in response to a rise in prices resulting from the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran kept the markets under pressure. The reserve contains around 660 million barrels of crude and the news of the President to easily direct the release of 30 million, 50 million or even 100 million barrels without compromising its ability to meet future supply shortages weighed. The Brent-WTI crude oil spread widened to $4.14 from $3.02 per barrel, which could spur US oil producers to export more crude oil and benefit US refiners. The spread hit $11.40 per barrel on June 7, the widest spread since February 27, 2015. US crude oil exports fell 28 per cent to 1,461,000 bpd last week, but rose by 733,000 bpd (101 per cent) YoY.Oil prices will remain volatile and we could be looking at another week of two-sided trading unless there is unexpected news. Crude oil could get a boost if the US dollar continues to tumble. A lower dollar tends to increase foreign demand for dollar-denominated crude oil. Lower than expected August oil exports from Saudi Arabia could also support the market. Any escalation in tensions between the US and China this week could cause prices to suddenly tumble. This could be triggered during the week by the announcement of additional tariffs on China by the Trump administration. Hedge funds and money managers cut their bullish wagers on US crude for the first time in nearly a month, a further sign of weaker sentiment for the market.
