  601. Telcos done, Ambani now trains his gun on Flipkart, AmazonKOLKATA: Walmart-owned Flipkart and Amazon may soon face intense competition from Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Retail, which has just ventured into online sales of smartphones, televisions, refrigerators and air-conditioners, two senior industry executives said.Reliance Retail, which is the country’s largest brick-and-mortar retail chain, has launched an online shop front for its smartphone and electronics format Reliance Digital, which is also the country’s largest electronics retailer. These categories are the largest pie of Indian ecommerce accounting for almost 55-60% of the business of Amazon and Flipkart. Reliance will be gearing up to take a sizeable share of online sales of smartphones, televisions and electronics for the upcoming festive season with price-competitive deals and offers matching that of these two top online marketplaces. An industry executive said Reliance will run heavy discounting from time to time on some products like exclusive models and old models like other online marketplaces, while other products will be priced at par with the Reliance Digital offline stores. “Nevertheless, Reliance Digital already has an aggressive pricing for its offline stores which are, at times, even the lowest in the market and top brands like LG, Samsung, Sony, Xiaomi and Panasonic now control most of the online discounts so pricing will be quite competitive with Amazon and Flipkart,” he said. The company will also differentiate itself with its in-house service wing, ResQ, which does installation, demo and aftersales service for the products. The Reliance Digital and smaller Jio stores will act as fulfilment centres for the online orders. Reliance was piloting online sales of mobile phones and consumer electronics for employees for over a year. “The commercial operation has just been launched across India. While this is an omni-channel expansion of Reliance Digital, there will be dedicated focus on making the online operation successful,” another executive said. An email sent to Reliance Retail did not elicit any response till Sunday press time.

It suggests barring such companies from profiling and tracking of children, carrying out their behavioural monitoring or targeting them with advertisements, and undertaking any other processing of personal data that can cause significant harm to them.Apart from the social media and technology giants, education tech companies like Bengaluru based Byju’s that provides online coaching services to children and gaming firms may also face restrictions if the recommendations are accepted.“The justification for such differential treatment arises from the recognition that children are unable to fully understand the consequences of their actions,” the panel said in its report.Need For Parental Consent“This is only exacerbated in the digital world, where data collection and processing is largely opaque and mired in complex consent forms,” the panel said in its report submitted to the government on Friday.Though some of the websites and apps allow children to sign up if they are 13 years of age or older, their consent to the terms and conditions isn’t valid under India’s laws.Under the Indian Contract Act 1872, a minor cannot enter into a contract â€" this would mean that they could not have consented to the terms and conditions of usage of websites and apps. The Srikrishna panel is recommending enforcement of this.Google, Facebook, Instagram and Byju’s were not immediately available for comment.“Since companies targeting children can’t profile such children, track behavioural data and send targeted advertising the companies are dependent on, revenues maybe hit,” said Kartik Maheshwari, leader for technology companies at law firm Nishith Desai Associates.
  603. Now, your visa hinges on your online profile tooMind your step! These words have taken on a new meaning for globetrotting individuals who are also active on social media. Immigration and border security officials across several countries are keeping an eye on your social media trail and looking up your online profiles. This helps throw up inconsistencies in information submitted to immigration authorities, connections to extremist organisations- if any, and even posts that could be considered hate speech under the host country's laws. In addition, officials in some countries such as the US have the authority to search your electronic devices- be it your cell phone or laptop. A white paper issued by Berry Appleman & Leiden (BAL), a global law firm, states that 30,200 searches of electronic devices were conducted by US border officials in fiscal 2017, a spike of 58% over the previous year. Contrast this with fiscal 2015, where there were only 8,500 cases of searches of electronic device. This trend of increased searches continues. Up to March 31, which in the US constitutes the first six months of fiscal 2018, nearly 15,000 searches were conducted. "Although only a small percentage of travellers are likely to be so searched, those entering or exiting the US should be prepared in the event they are asked to unlock their cell phone or other device at the borders," states BAL in its white paper 'Social media and immigration'. A basic search of electronic devices can be conducted even without any suspicion of criminal conduct. An advanced search, which entails confiscating the device and sending it to a forensic lab, is carried out when officers have a reasonable suspicion of criminal violation or concerns of national security.
  604. Despite being tech innovators, Indian firms slower in adopting digitisation: ExpertsSINGAPORE: Indian corporations are slower in adopting digitisation due to lack of infrastructure despite the fact that most of the technological innovations and solutions are being developed in the country, experts said here today.Almost all international organisations have set up technology labs in India. "It is a case of innovative solutions being developed in India, while the users are elsewhere in the world," Dr Rajiv Aserkar, head of global MBA and professor of logistics and supply chain management at SP Jain School of Global Management, said."Indian corporations need the support of a robust infrastructure -- airports, railway network and roads -- to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT)," he stressed.According to Cyrille Witjas, managing director of global management consulting firm Accenture Strategy, India is well placed to manage disruptive technologies with its talented youths showing innovations and new ideas through start-ups.Accenture Strategy has a Centre of Excellence in Bangalore.India's "demographic dividend" is not just about more number of workers but about a massive pool of highly skilled, capable and educated workforce entering the active workforce, Kumud Jha, a senior executive at Accenture Strategy, said. This will be the critical driver supporting the global digital industry and will serve India Inc very well in times to come, Jha added.Indian corporations have a big advantage in adopting digital technologies at a faster pace and cost-effectively, given that most of the globally applicable innovations and solutions are coming out of laboratories based in the country, the experts said. But as of now, the Indian corporations are slower in adopting digitisation for lack of infrastructure, Aserkar said."These backyard-based labs, serving the world's leading business houses, will offer the Indians cost-effective innovations and solutions, on the next-door delivery basis," he added. The management gurus were sharing their insights on digitisation in Southeast Asia and India following the recent release of a joint study conducted by SP Jain School of Global Management and Accenture Strategy on digital supply chain. The six-month study, "Measuring Digital Supply Chain Maturity", was based on responses from top management of over 130 companies."Though we note the slower pace of digitisation technologies by Indian corporations, most of these innovations and solutions are being developed in India and are available in their backyards," Aserkar pointed out.Expressing confidence, Witjas said India is well placed to manage disruptive technologies with its talented youths exhibiting new innovations and new ideas through start-ups on almost daily basis."It is the enthusiasm and motivation backed by good quality education," observed Witjas especially from a wide range of products and innovations being presented by startups at Accenture Strategy's Centre for Excellence.Pointing to the digital disruption and fast changing technologies spread across all industries, he stressed on the importance of good education managing the process of working in the future. This is where young IT engineers and professionals will have to manage new technologies, he said, adding that technologies will not be taking over every job as it is being widely assumed about future employment prospects. There would be bigger demand for soft skills, especially to put together talented teams in managing future jobs, which will be based on artificial learning, machine learning, virtual reality and augmented reality, Witjas said."Whatever your profession be, you will have to manage and sell technology," he said, stressing that human interaction will be required, starting from classroom, even though there is propagation of virtual classroom, to the market place.
  605. India's logged a record $98 billion in deals this yearBy Anto Antony and George Smith AlexanderIndian companies have been involved in deals worth a record $97.6 billion this year. Top banker JPMorgan Chase & Co. is predicting more offshore interest in the nation, particularly in technology, media and telecom.Walmart Inc.’s $16 billion acquisition of a majority stake in Indian e-commerce company Flipkart Online Services Pvt. Ltd. -- a deal JPMorgan advised -- has been the biggest so far, pushing the total past a previous annual peak of $92.3 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. India’s bankruptcy process has also spurred activity with more than $26 billion in distressed steel assets coming on the block, while a price war in telecom forced consolidation.“This year, if there is one stand-out product it is really M&A,” said Kalpana Morparia, the chief executive officer for South and South East Asia at JPMorgan, which climbed to the top spot in India for the first time in at least a decade. “We are seeing some great examples of inbound M&A and a fair amount of domestic consolidation, largely spurred by the bankruptcy process.”
  606. Porinju Veliyath's take on midcap selloff, chor stocks and moreKochi-based portfolio manager Porinju Veliyath â€" the enfant terrible of Indian stock market, on account of his statements and investment thesis â€" has been trying hard to explain the current situation to clients through a series of mails. He tells ET Magazine what he meant by investing in “chor” companies. Edited excerpts:You had advised investors to pick ‘chor’ companies. How would you make money in such companies? When I said invest in ‘chor’ companies, I never meant invest in fly-by-night operators. I talked about investing in companies that have sound business fundamentals but have lacked in corporate governance. With corporate reporting standards rising, these companies will have to reform themselves. If you get into such companies early on, you would, in the long term, end up owning good companies at a bargain. My premise was perhaps misinterpreted and misunderstood. I still believe the premise is right. What made you write emails to your investors?I like to keep it transparent. The emails are more of status updates. Investors should know how their money is managed. I write to them whatever I analyse of the markets. Some of our new investors had panicked back then. They wanted me to sell and cut losses. Some of them wanted me to buy stocks that did not meet our investment criteria. I wanted to reassure them. Are you optimistic of a bounce-back?This is a good time to invest in medium-quality midcap stocks. I am saying medium quality because there’s great value emerging in that segment after the recent correction. Top-quality midcaps are still pricey. This paranoia around midcap and smallcap stocks will go away soon.Did you foresee such a deep correction? The situation is a bit crazy at the moment. Towards 2017-end, many of us were expecting some levels of price correction as the market was moving into another year (fifth, to be precise) of a bull run. What we did not expect was such a deep correction. We failed to anticipate such strong bouts of panic selling. There was a lot of euphoria around mid and smallcap stocks the whole of last year. A lot of new money had moved into midcaps then. This resulted in several low-quality stocks also riding the tide. Most investments of last year would be out of money now.Investors have lost money in sector front-liners, too. This correction is not restricted to mid and smallcaps alone. Even quality largecap companies have fallen over the past few months. If you exclude the top-15 or 20 Nifty stocks, the entire market has corrected sharply since the beginning of this year.
  607. Bullish on IT, underweight on metals, FMCG, oil & gasGopikrishna Shenoy, chief investment officer, SBI Life Insurance, believes there is ample opportunity in markets that can give good returns over the next one year if one looks beyond a few stocks that led to the rally. In an interview with Shilpy Sinha, Shenoy, who manages assets worth ₹1.2 lakh crore, said he is overweight on consumer discretionary, ancillaries, retail banking, capital goods, cement and retail space. Edited excerpts:How do you look at the earnings this quarter? Numbers look good. Broadly, we were expecting 20%-plus revenue, EBIDTA and profit growth for this quarter to come in ex of banking and energy for index stocks. Initial numbers in IT, automobile have been better. By and large, numbers have been good. But the increase is not reflected in the stock prices. The broader market has not performed. An analysis of how many stocks contributed to 600 points jump in the Nifty last quarter shows that 86% of the contribution was by five stocks. While Nifty went up 5% plus, small cap index came down 8% and midcap index came down 3%. That’s why many fund management industry is not rejoicing. They are not able to beat the index because the broader market is not participating. When do you see the rebound in midcaps and small caps? Is valuation looking attractive? Yes, we think so. It’s a good opportunity (to buy). The correction has been sharp and fast. The fall does not look like it’s triggered by the fundamentals of individual companies going bad. There are other reasons. It started with interest rates moving up in end January, further went down because of oil prices spike, CAD, rupee depreciation and one hike in interest rate since then. We may be half way through. It may be taking longer because macros are not likely to correct so soon. Moreover, there will be noise because of mid-term elections in the US. This is going to coincide with two more hikes that US is likely to do. After that, we have four state elections in India. And then, the general elections.Where are you investing? Are you looking at pharma and IT?We have given details of where we are bullish. We are comfortable with IT. Growth is back and companies have displayed agility to make necessary changes as demanded by the industry. They are also meeting guidance and expectations. INR is also helping. The sentiment in pharma improved after the resolution of FDA issues in one of the pharma major’s plants. However, it may take time for companies to convert their business models as demanded by the industry to speciality. We wait for the situation to unfold.Where have you allocated less capital? We are underweight oil and gas, FMCG, telecom and metals and mining. The market feels marketing margins of OMCs may not be up to the expectations. Lesser allocations to FMCG is led more by valuations.Interest rates are firming up. Are people moving away from Ulips to traditional and within Ulips to equity funds from bond funds?Interest rates have gone up. Our bond fund where NAV is declared on a regular basis has borne the brunt of this. Despite this, people gave us more money in the bond fund. In terms of inflows in the past year, bond inflows have outpaced equity inflows. Bond fund AUM has grown 39% compared to 22% in ULIP AUM for one year ending June 2018.Why did you see more money flowing in the bond fund? Our funds have performed very well. Our investors have confidence on account of our good track record. The thought process in debt is less susceptible to volatility compared to equity. How many hikes do you expect from the RBI this year?Last time, we kept our outlook neutral, but RBI raised rates as oil was a consideration. Oil has come off 10%. But going forward, we don’t see CPI coming down significantly. Core is also strong. We have a forecast of 5% up to March on CPI. We have global interest rate moving up. We assume there will be one hike this year. Bond prices factor this.Where do you see markets in the next one year? There is scope for reasonable gains, however risks highlighted earlier cannot be ignored. We are very constructive as opportunities thrown up are good. Large cap stocks have moved significantly, and the broader markets for stocks other than top 10 in market cap is giving opportunity. After corporate earnings, what are the other triggers for the markets?Corporate earnings are expected to be good. Monsoon so far is good. The government has doled out more incentives in terms of GST relaxation. In terms of internal domestic factors, we are well placed. Now, we will have to look for oil price, trade war and current account deficit to improve.
  608. Curbs on tracking minors’ data may hurt tech giantsMUMBAI: Technology behemoths such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, which have a large following among teenagers in India, are likely to be hit if Justice Srikrishna Committee’s recommendations to curb data tracking of and advertising targeted at users under the age of 18 are accepted. The draft data privacy law submitted by the panel calls for severe restrictions on guardian data fiduciaries â€" companies that operate commercial websites or online services directed at children or process large volumes of personal data of children.
