'Technology, human-machine interface to shape future' Automation has begun disrupting the job market, but at the same time more jobs are being created, according to William âBillâ Boulding, dean of Duke Universityâs Fuqua School of Business. In an interview with Prachi Verma Dadhwal, Boulding spoke about the skills that would be relevant in the coming decades, and the need for a stronger alliance between political and business leaders so that benefits of globalisation reach all sections of the society. Edited excerpts:How important is India for Duke University? India is one of the most important economies in the world. In the last few years we have created six advisory boards and one of them is in India. India would only grow in importance in the global economy. We need to be in places that matter in the world. These advisory boards help establish our identity, besides providing us an understanding of these markets. One of the interesting things in India is the importance of family businesses. It is a different model from other parts of the world. Are business leaders doing enough for society? Part of the issue we are seeing in various parts of world, including India, is the collision of business and politics. Unfortunately, there appears to be mistrust between the worlds of business and politics. This has been earned by the business community as they have engaged in actions that have not been in the best interest of society. The business community should understand that in the capitalist world, it is all right to make profits, but it is also equally important to give back to society. How can leadersâ"both political and businessâ" improvise so that their decisions benefit the entire society? The key thing for either political or business leaders is whether they are trying to make peopleâs lives better or are they being selfish. Leadership is not about power; it is about serving others. People find such leaders more trustworthy. The global economy has not been beneficial to all segments of society. This is where business leaders should be responsible. We encourage innovation, but what happens to people who are now jobless? Technology is disrupting many jobs. The challenge is not to forget people who are left behind with the use of technology. We need a better a partnership between government and business to drive innovation to solve challenges, including those left behind by new technologies. Are jobs facing a threat with the rise of automation? Some people paint a scary picture of robots taking away jobs, and that artificial intelligence and machine learning will replace humans. The reality is that many existing jobs will be replaced. But at the same time, many jobs will come into existence. New classes of jobs that need human interface with machines will come into existence. One has to focus on how humans would interact with technology and make people comfortable with these new technologies. We need to train people from an early age on such technologies. What are the relevant skills for the next decade or so? Silicon Valley companies say their problem in innovation is not underlying technology, but it is the people. The real innovation driver is people. Leaders need to get people together and take them to the next level, serving a common purpose. It is a leadership challenge to work effectively with people who are different and build a level of trust, respect and credibility. This kind of leadership talent is, and will be, in short supply. The second skill is related to the technology dimension, as technology itself will not shape our future, but human-machine interface will. We do not want to outsource human judgment to machines. Business leaders need intellectual quotient to be able to navigate the world, emotional quotient to drive innovation by bringing people together and, thirdly, decency quotient as decency is profoundly gaining importance as people need to believe that they are valued. In addition to people skills, new analytic skills would also be a requisite among future leaders. DLF Brands to close down womenâs accessories brand Claireâs in India NEW DELHI: DLF Brands is shuttering the India store network of US womenâs accessories brand Claire's amid trouble at the American brand that filed for bankruptcy in May this year, reports Rasul Bailay. âThe company has filed for Chapter 11 in the US and that is the reason we are closing the stores,â said Timmy Sarna, chief executive of DLF Brands. âWe are currently liquidating the stock.âClaire's outlets in India are currently running a flat 75% off "closing down sale." Two store staff said the brand is shutting stores as the India operations have been impacted by Claire's bankruptcy in the US. Claireâs hopes to compete the Chapter 11 process by September and said the company plans to continue operating about 1,600 stores of Claireâs and Icing brands and the company seeks to prune its debt to $1.9 billion from about $2.1 billion at the end of 2017. DLF Brands operated about nine Claireâs and Sarna said the company now focuses on opening more franchisee outlets of Disney &Me. So far DLF Brands has opened four Disney & Me stores. Delhi High Court issues notices to Flipkart, Amazon on FDI violation PIL NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has issued notices to Flipkart and Amazon besides the Centre in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Telecom Watchdog, which alleged the ecommerce giants had violated FDI norms and circumvented them by routing popular products at much cheaper rates through proxy âcontrolled sellersâ and pushing out small businesses and brick-and-mortar retailers.â⦠to circumvent the PN-3/2016 (Press Note 3, the document which spells out the FDI norms for ecommerce), both Amazon and Flipkart have created multiple entities and/or created âname lendingâ companies and/or âcontrolled sellersâ through which they route such hot-selling stocks,â the petition filed by the NGO said. The petition added that âthrough the name lending companies, they buy the branded goods in bulk (at discounts) from manufacturers, rendering small sellers uncompetitive by a wide margin, thus influencing the prices in violation of FDI norms.âAmazon and Flipkart, which have foreign funding, operate through a marketplace model under which they are not allowed to influence the prices of products sold on their website or hold inventory.Through these sellers, Amazon and Flipkart have complete control on influencing the price of goods sold on their platforms, a practice that violates FDI norms of the country, the NGO alleged.Citing the example of one such seller, Cloudtail, which sells on Amazon.in, the petition said: ââ¦FDI is not allowed in an entity operating on the inventory based e-commerce modelâ¦. Cloudtail buys goods in bulk from many manufacturers and sells them on the online platform of Amazon Seller.âThe petition alleged that to circumvent FDI norms, Amazon has created a company called Prione Business Services, a joint venture between Amazon group and Catarman Advisors LLP. This entity is the owner of Cloudtail.Flipkart and Amazon did not respond to queries were sent by ET.After the new FDI norms came into force with the issue of Press Note 3, Flipkart devised a new method under which it looked for some âname lendersâ who would form companies and through them the invoicing for goods would be routed.
