2440. The one battle private banks just can't winMUMBAI: State-run banks outside of the Reserve Bank of India's Prompt Corrective Action maintained their market share in loans when peers under the PCA lost their position to private banks. But despite their poor financials, they held on to their dominance in deposits, depriving the private sector of the gains that they had in loans, said rating company ICRA.Private sector banks will continue to take market share away from public sector banks bound by RBI’s so-called prompt corrective action (PCA) norms. However, recoveries due to the bankruptcy code and capital infusion by the government will help these lenders pose competition to their private sector counterparts from fiscal 2021, it said.“Private sector banks (PVBs) market share is expected to increase from 30.9% (as on March 31, 2018) to around 38-40% in the foreseeable future and stabilise at that levels,” ICRA said. Most of this market share is likely to be wrested away from PCA public sector banks while non-PCA banks are expected to be maintained at 50-51%.The 11 banks on RBI’s PCA list are Allahabad Bank, United Bank of India, Corporation Bank, IDBI Bank, UCO Bank, Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Dena Bank, Bank of Maharashtra. These banks have been put under this watch list because of their weak operational and financial metrics are restricted from opening new branches, increasing their loan book, hiring new staff and lending to companies below the investment grade. However, private sector banks have not been able to make inroads into the deposit base of public sector lenders, ICRA said. “Unlike the gain in advances market share, private banks were unable to gain significant market share in deposits given the strong deposit franchise of public sector banks. As against an increase of 5.1 per cent in share of advances for during last 2 years, their increase share in deposits was lower at 3.5 per cent. Within PSBs, non-PCA PSBs held on to their market share at around 52-53 per cent, however, deposit market share of PCA PSBs declined to 21.9 per cent as on March 31, 2018 from 25.1 per cent as on June 30, 2016,” ICRA said.Last week, the government also announced a total capital infusion of Rs 11,337 crore into five public sector banks, in the first such capital infusion this year. Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Corporation Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and Punjab National Bank are the weakest among the public sector lenders in terms of core capital.Capital infusion along with likely recoveries from bankruptcy cases will help these lenders regain strength in the next couple of years ICRA predicted. “Private sector banks may face issues in sustaining such a high loan-to-deposit ratio given the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) and cash reserve ratio (CRR) requirements of 19.5 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively unless they are able to improve their incremental share in deposits. Accordingly, we also expect that the advances market share of private banks shall stabilise at best at 38-40 per cent in foreseeable future,” said Anil Gupta, head financial sector ratings, ICRA.
2441. How apps thought small to win big in IndiaKOLKATA: Amazon, Flipkart and Ola are among a set of digital giants betting on lightweight versions of their mobile apps to take their business to millions of customers in India’s suburban and small towns, overcoming patchy mobile internet connectivity and sluggish data speeds.Cab hailing service Ola said deployment of Ola Lite â€" which weighs only 1 MB and loads easily even at 2G speeds â€" helped the company grow its business in tier 2 and 3 towns without compromising on the booking experience.“It makes sense for app developers to invest in creating dedicated light versions of their platform,” Peter Boyland, analyst at UK speed tester OpenSignal, told ET, pointing at India’s exploding mobile internet and smartphone penetration and lower speed mobile networks in the subcontinent.Creating lighter versions is often simple, Boyland said, “as it does not require a complete redesigning of the app, but merely a lowering of the resolution on the graphics or video content, or simplifying the navigation”. Like they say, the proof of the pudding’s always in the eating.Online marketplace Amazon India said more than 65% of its orders and a majority of new customer acquisitions “now come from tier 2 and below geographies”, largely propelled by the launch of its 2 MB lightweight mobile app Micron. Its bigger rival Flipkart said its lighter app variant Flipkart Lite was instrumental in solving access problems for consumers in areas with poor mobile network coverage. An Amazon India spokeswoman said Micron was an India- centric innovation. “India has witnessed mobile adoption on a huge scale but a large percentage of customers still use entrylevel smartphones with low data capacities,” she said in an email response to ET. Micron was developed and launched to “address their unique needs and enhance their shopping experience”, she said.
2442. Facebook's $151 bn rout could rewrite history booksBy Adam Haigh and Garfield ReynoldsFacebook Inc. has racked up plenty of milestones in its pioneering journey. Now the social-media giant is poised to add one it would doubtless rather avoid: the biggest stock-market wipeout in American history. That could happen Thursday if the 24 per cent tumble in Facebook’s stock in after-hours trading is replicated in the regular New York session. Its market capitalization plummeted late Wednesday, at one point by about $151 billion, as sales and user growth disappointed investors. A move of that magnitude on Thursday would likely be the largest ever loss of value in one day for a US-traded company. The following is a look at some of history’s other notable one-day share slams, considering American firms that were worth at least $150 billion in any year over the past decade.

2444. KIA Motors bets big on SUV, to launch 5 models in 3 yearsKorean auto-maker KIA Motors is betting big on its maiden India launch with a mid-sized SUV and plans to introduce five models within three years beginning 2019, a company official said. KIA Motors, the second-largest auto-maker in Korea after Hyundai with a 30 per cent market share, would launch the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) in the second half of 2019 produced from its upcoming facility at Andhra Pradesh. "The demand is now towards the SUV segment. We are launching our first car in the Indian market which would be a mid-sized SUV," Manohar Bhat, head (sales and marketing) of KIA Motors India, told reporters here today. Unlike Maruti and Hyundai, which tasted success in India by launching small cars initially, Bhat said that KIA will launch the SUV because the market has towards that segment. Executive director of KIA Motors India Yong S Kim said that India was the final step in the global footprint of KIA Motors. "In India, we want to be among the top five automakers in the three years of launch in 2019," he said. He said that the Indian plant was being set up at an investment of USD 1.1 billion and would give direct employment to 3,000 people. The plant would have an annual capacity of three lakh cars, Kim added. The plant was being built on 600 acres and would be fully operational by the second half of 2019, he said. "Primarily, KIA plans to sell its products in the domestic market," Kim said.
2445. Private power producers allege CIL selling more coal through e-auctionsPrivate power producers have alleged that Coal India is selling increased quantities of coal through e-auctions and have sought to stop e-auction sales till the company’s supply obligations to the power sector to generate low cost power are met.Ashok Khurana, director general of Association of Power Producers alleged that generators with supply contracts are receiving less than 75% of their stipulated requirements leading to severe shortage of the dry fuel at power plants. Instead, the country’s coal supplier is offering additional quantities through e-auctions that fetch a premium over the notified price. The Association recently apprised the coal and power ministry of the issue and urged them to take it up on a priority basis.A senior Coal India executive said the coal producer has ample production capabilities and there is no supply shortfall at pit head plants but non-pit head plants suffer from stock shortage due to logistics and law & order issues although we are ready to supply their full contracted quantity.Rest of the coal that cannot be sent to power plants is auctioned and it is mostly carried through roadways on trucks, the Coal India executive added. In fact, Coal India offered the auction route for stressed power assets to help the latter survive the onslaught of financial institutions.Under the current scenario, the situation could be managed by restricting movement of coal by rail to power stations holding more than 21-days stock and operating at poor capacity utilisation levels. This coal can be diverted to plants facing critical stocks, particularly in the Northern and western Regions of the country. “Indian Railways is adding new tracks and doubling existing ones while a large section of the tracks are also being electrified. It is expected to help evacuate additional coal,” the official said.Nevertheless, data compiled by the Association indicates that in 2017-18 Coal India was to supply 528 million tonnes of coal as part of its fuel supply agreement with power companies. There was a shortfall of 104 million tonnes. In contrast, the company supplied 31 million tonnes to the sector through e-auction at an average premium of 27% earning revenue of Rs 4,371 crore.Khurana said it is evident that Coal India has ample stocks to allocate under supply agreements but it chooses to allocate it under auction schemes. With inadequate coal supply, developers have no option but to fall back on e-auction or imported coal to meet their power supply obligations. In a recently held auction, the premium was as high as 81%, reflecting the demand supply mismatch. Forcing generators to depend on imported or auctioned coal is leading to increased generation costs that are hovering between Rs 3.5 per unit and Rs 4.08 per unit.
