  97. TRAI readies plan to bring datagiri to endNEW DELHI: India’s telecom watchdog has suggested regulation of all entities dealing with consumer dataâ€"devices such as iPhones, operating systems such as Android, browsers like Google’s Chrome and apps such as Facebook, Paytm, Uber or Zomatoâ€" by bringing them under licence conditions that apply to telecom service providers until a general data protection law is put in place by the government. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said the framework for protection of personal information is “not sufficient” and that the issue of data ownership, privacy, and security is complex and multi-dimensional. It suggested expanding the ambit of licence conditions governing telcos to all entities handling customer information and empowerment of customers to keep their data secure. The telecom watchdog further said that individual users owned their data, or personal information, and entities such as devices were "mere custodians” and do not have primary rights over that information. Some experts said the recommendation that mandates devices to allow consumers to delete even pre-installed apps or download any pre-certified app â€" without restriction â€" could force device makers such as Apple to change the contours of their content and privacy policies, if implemented by the government. They, however, questioned whether the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) â€" to which the suggestions have been sent â€" has the ambit to frame laws to regulate apps, operating systems and browsers.
  98. Heineken seeks legal opinion on UB chairmanshipWorld’s largest beer maker Heineken NV, the majority partner of United Breweries with Vijay Mallya, is understood to have sought legal opinion over its right to appoint a chairman at the Indian company, top officials close to the development said.Heineken and some of its advisers believe that the shareholder agreement between Mallya and the beer giant has become null and void after India’s Enforcement Directorate attached his shares as part of its legal action against the liquor baron.Heineken is also believed to have begun discussions with Mallya on his role as chairman in UBL. The original shareholder agreement between the two allowed Mallya to be chairman for life and a non-retiring director. This status can change only if he steps down on his own or nominates someone to replace him.Heineken declined to reply to an email questionnaire. Mallya also did not respond. The board of UBL, India’s biggest beer company, had asked Mallya to either step down or appoint a nominee after the Securities and Exchange Board of India barred wilful defaulters from holding key board positions last year. Mallya promised to do something by December 2017 while emphasising his opposition to an outside nominee.65017298
