  169. Apple becomes 1st $1 tn listed US companySAN FRANCISCO: Apple Inc became the first $1 trillion publicly listed U.S. company on Thursday, crowning a decade-long rise fueled by its ubiquitous iPhone that transformed it from a niche player in personal computers into a global powerhouse spanning entertainment and communications. The tech company's stock jumped 2.8 percent to as high as $207.05, bringing its gain to about 9 percent since Tuesday when it reported June-quarter results above expectations and said it bought back $20 billion of its own shares.Started in the garage of co-founder Steve Jobs in 1976, Apple has pushed its revenue beyond the economic outputs of Portugal, New Zealand and other countries. Along the way, it has changed how consumers connect with one another and how businesses conduct daily commerce. The Silicon Valley stalwart's stock has surged more than 50,000 percent since its 1980 initial public offering, dwarfing the S&P 500's approximately 2,000-percent increase during the same almost four decades.During that time, Apple evolved from selling Mac personal computers to becoming an architect of the mobile revolution with a cult-like following.Jobs, who died in 2011, was succeeded as chief executive by Tim Cook, who has doubled the company's profits but struggled to develop a new product to replicate the society-altering success of the iPhone, which has seen sales taper off in recent years. In 2006, the year before the iPhone launch, Apple generated less than $20 billion in sales and net profit just shy of $2 billion. By last year, its sales had grown more than 11-fold to $229 billion - the fourth highest in the S&P 500 - and net income had mushroomed at twice that rate to $48.4 billion, making it the most profitable publicly-listed U.S. company. One of five U.S. companies since the 1980s to take a turn as Wall Street's largest company by market capitalization, Apple could lose its lead to the likes of Alphabet Inc or Amazon.com Inc if it does not find a major new product or service as demand for smartphones loses steam.
  170. Why PSBs are protesting against Aadhaar PayBENGALURU| KOLKATA: While digital payments has now been a battleground for banks and payment companies vying for a larger share, a new strife is brewing between public and private sector banks.United Bank of India (UBI), the Kolkata-based public sector lender, stopped Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AEPS) from April for its users on devices installed by new-generation banks such as IDFC Bank, IndusInd Bank, RBL Bank and YES Bank alleging round-tripping by their business correspondents (BCs).ET has learnt that these private banks recently wrote to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the payment railroad, complaining about the move by United Bank and NPCI has forwarded the letter to Reserve Bank of India seeking the regulator’s intervention.“AEPS transactions are mainly done by citizens of far-off areas where there are not many branches or ATMs. Ths arbitrary move by the public sector bank is causing trouble for banking customers withdrawing cash from our micro ATMs,” said a senior banker of one of the private sector banks affected by the shutdown.“We also do not understand why we have been singled us out as micro ATMs are deployed by every bank.” Another banker said that though his bank has taken the matter up with NPCI, nothing has moved so far. “Business correspondents were resorting to round-tripping of funds through the micro ATMs and earning commission for each transaction in the process, which is causing us to pay huge sums to private banks who have deployed these terminals,” said a senior public sector banker on the condition of anonymity. He said some banks have had to cough up about Rs 1 crore in interchange fee in the March quarter while earning just about Rs 4,000 as interchange from other banks. Interchange fee is the service fee that one bank pays to another when the former’s customer does a transaction on a terminal of the latter bank.Another senior banker in the know of the matter said that government banks opened the maximum number of Jan Dhan accounts from customers in far-flung rural areas. These customers mostly get subsidy money into their bank accounts and rely on micro ATMs to withdraw cash.Sensing a business opportunity, the new-age, tech-savvy private banks deployed multiple devices across rural India through their retail partners known as BCs.
  171. Delist fake goods sellers, Delhi High Court tells AmazonNEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has ordered Amazon Seller Services to delist some sellers on its platform after Beverly Hills Polo Club said they were selling fake products of the US brand on the e-commerce site.Beverly Hills Polo dragged Amazon to court last month, claiming that some of its sellers were indulging in “widespread sale of counterfeit products” including apparels, accessories and fragrances. “The defendant shall remove forthwith from its platform any URLs which are pointed out by the plaintiff which are selling products in violation of the plaintiff ’s right,” the court ordered in a ruling on July 16.Lawyers for Beverly Hills Polo said Amazon took off some URLs after they had sent legal notices but subsequently fresh links had sprung up on the Amazon site. Amazon said it has “zero tolerance for counterfeit.”“We remove suspected counterfeit items as soon as we become aware of them, and we suspend or block bad actors suspected of engaging in illegal behaviour or infringing others’ intellectual property rights,” an Amazon spokesperson said in an email, without answering specific questions about the Beverly Hills Polo case.Mumbai-based Major Brands operates franchisee outlets of Beverly Hills Polo Club in Indian cities including New Delhi and Mumbai. The case was filed by Lifestyle Equities CV, the company that owns the brand. The US fashion company has an agreement with Cloudtail, the largest retailer on Amazon, to sell online perfumes and fragrances. The company does not sell any other products online in India, its lawyers told the court, according to the ruling.“Branded and trademark products of Beverly Hills Polo are sold and fulfilled by Amazon and when you ask them who your suppliers are they won’t tell you,” said Mohit Goel, a lawyer for Beverly Hill Polo.Allegations of selling fake products of Indian and global companies have grown over the years. Late last year, Skechers had filed a similar case against Flipkart and four sellers on its platform.
  172. Rediffusion buys back WPP & Dentsu’s stakeMUMBAI: Advertising agency Rediffusion will no longer be known as Rediffusion Y&R. The 40% stake held jointly by Young & Rubicam, part of WPP, and Japanese ad giant Dentsu have been bought back by its founders Diwan Arun Nanda, chairman at the agency and Ajit Balakrishnan, CEO, Rediff.com. Post the deal, Nanda and Balakrishnan have complete control over Rediffusion and its second agency Everest.Specialist brands run as joint ventures like Wunderman for direct marketing and Sudler & Hennessey for healthcare will now be known as Rediffusion Direct and Rediffusion Health. WPP intends developing Y&R and the specialist divisions Wunderman and Sudler & Hennessey as wholly-owned agencies in India.Speaking to ET, Nanda said, “We’ve been trying to extricate ourselves for quite a while now. In the last decade, neither Dentsu nor Y&R have contributed anything to our revenues.”The dissolution of the 24-year long partnership comes in the wake of the departure earlier this year of WPP CEO Sir Martin Sorrell.Through the last decade, WPP had unsuccessfully tried to get a controlling stake in Rediffusion Y&R. Industry speculation point to the exodus of marquee Rediffusion clients like Colgate and Airtel to WPP group agencies as evidence of the pressure being applied on the owners of Rediffusion to sell.Nanda admits “The absence of Martin made it very easy.” Speaking about the DYR partnership, he says, “The only place of joint interest post Sorrell remained India; we were eager buyers and they were happy to be willing sellers.”While unwilling to reveal the price of the buyback, Nanda would only say, “It was a very reasonable amount.”According to Nanda, Rediffusion is now on “An acquisition spree for new business.” Recent wins by the agency include State Bank of India, the Tata Trusts and Liebherr, a German white goods firm. Nanda also sees great expansion in the digital space, powered by the expertise of Rediff.com.
  173. Food platforms yet to delist many restaurants sans FSSAI licenceNEW DELHI: About 40% of restaurants listed on online food delivery platforms such as UberEats, Zomato and Swiggy have failed to meet the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s deadline for obtaining licence, according to a statement issued by the regulator.Last month, following complaints of sub-standard food being served through some platforms, the FSSAI had directed 10 online food delivery platforms to delist non-FSSAI licensed food businesses by July 31, 2018. Apart from Swiggy, UberEats, Zomato, FSSAI had sent notices to Box8, Fasso’s, FoodCloud, Foodmongo, Foodpanda, Jusfood and LimeTray.“Some of the e-commerce platforms have not even obtained licence for themselves,” the statement, issued on Thursday, said.“It has also been decided to conduct audit of IT platforms of these e-commerce food aggregators from the angle of compliances for food safety and hygiene under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 read with Food Safety (Licensing and Registration) Regulations, 2011,” the statement said. The authority had also asked 10 such firms to submit action-taken reports along with details of the restaurants registered on their platform.“This is part of a special drive by the regulator to bring in all food businesses under the FSSAI licensing regime and ensure compliance of the food safety laws,” Pawan Agarwal, CEO of FSSAI, said.
  174. Vivo covers more price points, doubles market share to 12 per centNEW DELHI: Chinese handset maker Vivo has made a strong comeback in the quarter ended June after suffering a decline in its smartphone market share in the previous quarter. The company attributed its improved performance in India to its broader new strategy to become an all-segment player.“Previously, we were focusing on Rs 10,000-15,000 (segment), but in the last six months we have gone beyond this category,” said Nipun Marya, director of brand strategy at Vivo India. “All products that we launched in the last 3-4 months are gaining significant market share,” he told ET. Marya said the realignment in product strategy following an “internal call to become an all price segment player” may have caused the slide in the first quarter of the year.BBK Electronic-owned Vivo cornered 12% market share in the April-June quarter of 2018, more than doubling its share from 5.8% in the previous quarter, according to data from Counterpoint Research.Citing GfK data, Marya claimed that Vivo is now the number two player in the Rs 20,000- Rs 30,000 segment. Counterpoint also ranked Vivo as the second largest player in the Rs 20,000- Rs 30,000 segment in the second quarter.
