1683. Pakistan stocks just found a celebrity fanMUMBAI: Pakistan is much more of a value investor's market while India remains the classic growth investor story in emerging markets, said CLSA's Equity Managing Director and Equity Strategist Christopher Wood in his weekly note Greed & Fear. In this latest note dated Thursday, Wood said he finds Pakistan's stock market attractive and will be looking to add stocks from the country in his portfolio. Wood said the recent rally in MSCI Pakistan index has been on the back of Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's victory in the country's general elections. A bailout by the International Monetary Fund now looks likely, the note said. "An IMF bailout now seemingly beckons, rumoured to be some US$12bn (billion)," said Wood. "The obvious problem is that the fiscal straightjacket implied by such a bailout conflicts with the populist agenda of the new government which, aside from the anti-corruption theme, contains much talk of building a Pakistan welfare state. This would be the first such IMF bailout since 2013 when the figure involved was US$6.6bn," added Wood. Wood pointed out that there could be political implications of a bailout due to Pakistan's role in recent years as the major 'guinea pig, or laboratory experiment' for China's "Belt and Road Initiative". China could react to an IMF bailout by providing financing to Pakistan on better terms, said Wood. From a monetary policy prospective, the State Bank of Pakistan has begun this year a long overdue tightening, raising rates by 100 basis points on 14 July to 7.5% and by 175 bps since January. "With fiscal tightening beckoning, all this means that growth will slow but the question is by how much," said Wood."GREED & fear sees no reason for now to remove the allocation to Pakistan based on the election result and will be looking to add on further weakness, be it currency and/or stock market related. The risk, however, is that Pakistan becomes a casualty of US-China tensions though such tensions also create the opportunity for the new government to play both sides off against each other," added Wood.

World's best places for another homeWith fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi, accused in the PNB fraud case, having acquired citizenship in the Caribbean nation of Antigua & Barbuda, the investment linked residency and citizenship programmes offered by various countries around the world have come under the scanner. While Choksi’s case has highlighted the trend of Indian high net worth individuals seeking to flee the country after getting on the wrong side of law, not all millionaires who are leaving India are necessarily running away. Earlier in March this year, Ruchir Sharma, head of emerging markets and chief global strategist at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, pointed out that the highest number of millionaires leaving their country of origin was from India. His comment was based on a survey carried out by the NW Wealth, which said since 2014, 23,000 millionaires have left India. In 2017, it was 7,000.Many immigration experts, in fact, feel that there is a trend among high net worth Indians to look for opportunities across the globe to either set up businesses or expand existing ones, for which they avail themselves of investment linked immigration schemes. “We do not see any clients using these programmes because they have committed crimes and would decline to represent any that had. However, there is significant rise in the number of clients with “clean” records using these programmes,” says Mark I Davies, global chairman of Davies & Associates, a global law firm.He adds that while a licensed law firm would look into such issues and not accept clients with any kind of criminal issues associated with them; unlicensed agents may not do that. “The problem in India is that agents are allowed to operate the passports by investment programmes. In other countries, only properly licensed professionals are allowed to do so. A solution is to prohibit agents form offering these passports in India unless they are properly qualified professionals.”Most countries that run investor immigration programmes, including Antigua, carry out a thorough background check on applicants including a search of global criminal databases. Usually, a clean police clearance is also required. Even as controversy clouds the issue of how Choksi acquired citizenship in Antigua and whether the Indian government will succeed in getting him back; here are some of the programmes that HNIs from India are using to leave the country.CaribbeanAntigua & Barbuda Citizenship by InvestmentAn applicant has to contribute $200,000 to the National Development Fund (NDF); or invest at least $400,000 in an approved real estate project with a 5-year lock-in or invest $1,500,000 directly into an eligible business as a sole investor. The process is governed by strict background checks before the applicant and their families are granted citizenship.Grenada citizenship by investmentBy investing $2 million in the country’s economy or a real estate development, applicant can acquire citizenship with the right to live and work. Under direct investment route, applicants may immediately apply for citizenship without first applying for permanent residence.Besides the opportunity to live and work in Grenada, this provides a route to the US E2 investment visa programme which is closed to Indian citizens.Belize retirementThis Caribbean nation has a retirement programme with an average annual income requirement for retirees of $24,000, which is not too high by north American standards. The other advantages are no taxes on worldwide income and the possibility of operating businesses out of Belize, ideal for senior citizens from US and Canada, including those of Indian origin.St Kitts & Nevis citizenship programmeBuying property worth $400,000 in St Kitts and Nevis entitles buyers to automatically qualify for residency. This also provides visa-free travel to more than 100 countries, including the Schengen zone, Canada, the UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.A contribution to public charity the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation of $250,000 (for a single applicant), or a non-refundable contribution to the Sustainable Growth Fund (SGF) of $150,000 also qualifies for acquisition of citizenshipEuropeCyprus residential investment schemeWith an investment of €2 million in real estate (locked in for 3 years) a fast-track citizenship application that covers whole family. Open to all nationalities, the process takes 6 months. There is no residency requirement and this is the fastest and most direct route to European Union citizenship.Malta individual investment programme: It provides an European Commission recognised route for citizenship in an European nation for global high net worth individuals and their families. Benefits include visa free travel in 160 countries including the USInvestment required is Euro 250,000 (lock-in 5 years); a government contribution of Euro 30,000 and property worth Euro 320,000 in Malta. Clean criminal record needed with the Malta government conducting extensive criminal checks globally. In 2018, the IIP received 1000 applications from investors in 40 different countries.Portugal Golden Resident Permit ProgramThis is a residency programme for non-EU investors. Applicants have to acquire property valued at a minimum of Euro 500,000.The investment can be in any commercial or residential real estate and provides an entry into the EU for businesses. It is also an easy route to permanent residency.UK Tier 1 (Investor) visaAccess to at least £2,000,000 in investment funds required to apply. Suitable for applicants from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. Can apply to settle after 2 years with £10 million investment. Suitable for small and medium business families looking to set up shop in the UK and Europe; education and quality of life in UK is attractive for Indians.AmericaEB-5 investors have to invest in a new commercial enterprise that will create full-time positions for at least 10 qualifying employees. The minimum investment is $1 million; and $500,000 in targeted employment areas. It takes about a year and a half for an EB-5 applicant to get a conditional green card; six months to receive approval for an I-526 petition. 513 I-526 petitions were filed by Indians in 2017. Considering the long queues for green cards (permanent residence) for highly skilled professionals in the US, this is a fast-track solution.Canada British Columbia Entrepreneur ProgramCandidates have to open a new business in the province, or significantly expand an existing one, to qualify for expedited Canadian permanent residency through the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP).Personal net worth of at least CAD $600,000.Minimum investment of CAD $200,000.Creation of at least one new job.Australia Investor Stream visaBusiness investment visa (subclass 188) is initially granted on provisional basis for 4 years. 1685. COAI raises red flags over Trai's pesky call diktatNEW DELHI: Mobile industry body COAI today raised red flag over Trai's new rules on curbing pesky calls and messages saying tailoring of systems, and use of blockchain technology will involve Rs 200-400 crore investment and 18 months for the roll out, at a time when the sector is financially-stressed.The Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) represents the voice of a large telecom operators in the country, all of who would be required to comply with these rules by December."As this system has not been implemented elsewhere in the world, it is difficult to quantify the exact investment or the time involved. But roughly, it will be in excess of Rs 200-400 crore investments for tailoring of the system," COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews told reporters.Even the December timeline is "extremely unfeasible" for customising the system to comply the new rules, Mathews said adding that at least 1-1.5 years would be needed to put the full system architecture in place. On whether the increased cost of compliance will be passed on by operators to the consumers in form of higher tariffs, Mathews said that generally costs tend to get passed on but in this case it would depend entirely on market dynamics.Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) last month came out with stringent unsolicited commercial communication rules under which an individual can revoke permission that they have granted to any commercial entity for a service. The mandated granularity in customer preferences also permit subscribers to set preference about days and time bands on which they would like to receive commercial communications as well as indicate preferred modes of communication - call or SMS.The rules lay down obligations for operators including evolving Code of Practices, maintaining records, and registering customers preferences, and mandate the adoption of blockchain or the Distributed Ledger Technology.Blockchain provides a decentralised database or digital ledger of transactions that everyone on the network can see."This is complex, time-consuming and a new territory. No cost-benefit analysis has been done to quantify the material impact that the changes will bring in. No other market has requirements this stringent," he said. The overhauled rules put the onus of compliance on telecom operators but do not effectively fix the overhanging issue of unregistered telemarketers, Mathews said."Access providers are on the hook...but how do we cast a net on the outsiders and unregistered telemarketers," Mathews said, adding that the rules also do not tackle the issue of pesky calls and messages being pushed through the Over-The-Top channels like WhatsApp.Terming the regulations as "practically unenforcable", COAI has also opposed financial disincentive on the operators for peksy calls made by the users.COAI said it plans to meet Trai to highlight these outstanding issues.Mathews said that the industry has had one round of discussions with players like IBM to understand the new system architecture that the regulations mandate.Under the new norms, Trai has asked telecom operators to allow customers to set their preference using mobile app developed by them or the regulator, by sending SMS to 1909, website etc without paying any money for these services. This facility comes in addition to existing choice of subscribers to partially or fully block telemarketers from calling them.Trai has raised the penalty cap on telecom operators by 10 folds to Rs 50 lakh in a month from Rs 5 lakh in previous regulations for violations of the norms.
1686. Mistry approaches NCLAT against his removal from Tata SonsOusted Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry today approached the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against the order of NCLT dismissing his plea challenging his removal as chairman of the company. A petition was filed before the appellate tribunal against the July 9 order of the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). "We have filed the appeal today," Mistry's counsel said. Mistry's appeal is now with the registry of the NCLAT, which would forward it after technical verification. Asked as to when would the matter be listed for hearing, the counsel said: "Nothing has been decided as of now." On July 9, NCLT Mumbai had dismissed pleas of Cyrus Mistry challenging Mistry's removal as Tata Sons chairman as also the allegations of rampant misconduct on part of Ratan Tata and the company's Board. A special bench of the tribunal held that the Board of Directors at Tata Sons was "competent" to remove the executive chairperson of the company. NCLT bench members B S V Prakash Kumar and V Nallasenapathy said that Mistry was ousted as chairman because the Tata Sons' Board and its majority shareholders had "lost confidence in him". Under the Companies Act 2013, an order of NCLT can be challenged before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). Mistry, who was the sixth chairman of Tata Sons, was ousted from the position in October 2016. He had taken over as the chairman in 2012 after Ratan Tata announced his retirement. Two months after his removal, Mistry's family-run firms Cyrus Investments Pvt Ltd and Sterling Investments Corp approached the NCLT as minority shareholders, against Tata Sons, Ratan Tata, and some other board members. Mistry in his pleas primarily argued that his removal was not in accordance with the Companies Act and that there was rampant mismanagement of affairs across Tata Sons. He also alleged that Tata Trust chairperson Ratan Tata and trustee N Soonawala interfered with the day-to-day operations of the group companies, they acted as shadow directors, and all of the above caused massive revenue loss for the group. The Tata Group had denied all charges and said Mistry was removed because the Board had lost confidence in him.
1687. Manpasand to invest Rs 1,500cr to set up 10 new plants by 2020Fruit juice maker Manpasand Beverages is planning to invest Rs 1,500 crore to set up 10 new manufacturing plants in the country by 2020 in its effort to drive volumes, a top company executive said. The company at present has six manufacturing plants across the country, of which three are in Vadodara, and one each in Varanasi, Dehradun and Ambala."We are planning to have a total of 16 plants in the country by 2020, and are looking to invest Rs 1,500 crore on 10 new plants," said Dhirendra Singh, chairman and managing director, Manpasand Beverages. The city-based firm is also planning to enter new product segments like milk based sugar free drinks, glucose drinks and protein based drinks over the next three years to grow revenues and provide a significant boost to its growth journey across local and global markets, he added."For a country whose per capita consumption of cold drinks stand at mere six litres against 90 litres in the US, we need to have more affordable products to drive sales. We can beat MNCs only by creating volumes and flooding the market with desi brands," said Singh. In a bid to tap rural markets across the country, the fruit juice maker has already expanded its nutritional drinks portfolio with a new brand Siznal a couple of months ago which Singh said has been receiving good response from the market. It has also tied up with Parle Products to cross promote products, which would enable the firm to get access to the 4.5 million outlets of Parle Products spread across India. With water being the most in-demand beverage of the future, Manpasand is planning to launch multiple facilities of packaged drinking water, according to Singh."India's bottled water market is growing at around 20 per cent annually and the company has planned to start monetising its water business," he said, adding, "A Rs 600-crore expansion plan is already underway across multiple locations and Manpasand would have double capacity by the end of 2018."It yesterday reported 1.30 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 36.37 crore for the June quarter, against a net profit of Rs 35.9 crore during the year-ago period.Total revenue stood at Rs 340.06 crore in the reporting quarter. It was Rs 392.94 crore in April-June 2017.In May this year, the company's statutory auditor Deloitte Haskins & Sells resigned ahead of a board meeting scheduled for May 30 for consideration of financial results.Deloitte Haskins & Sells had said Manpasand Beverages failed to provide them with "significant information" on the financial results for 2017-18."These issues are now things of past and we have already started working on our expansion plans within India and abroad," Singh said, adding it was an "aberration" and the company has already declared its results, audited by the new auditor.

Lenovo expects to regain 9% of smartphone market pie in 2-3 yearsBENGALURU: Lenovo said it is taking measures to get back its mojo in the Indian smartphone market and regain its 9% share over the next two to three years. The Chinese hardware and devices major has admitted that its products were not appropriate for the Indian market and taken a strategy to go full throttle on India-specific products across varied market segments.Yang Yuanqing, CEO, Lenovo, said the company has room to improve smartphones notwithstanding its “mistakes” in the past.Lenovo including Motorola achieved 9% share in Indian smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2016 and maintained its position till first quarter of 2017.During the first quarter of 2018, the company’s market share declined sharply, according to Counterpoint data. “We are not satisfied with performance and achievement. In two to three years we will have similar success we had in the past,” said Yuanqing, referring to its 9% market share in India in the recent past.Shashank Sharma, executive director and Asia Pacific leader, Lenovo Mobile Business Group and Motorola, said the company witnessed steep competition in the last one-and-a-half years with the entry of new players and realigned its focus to create values across varied customer segments and services.“We have taken steps to cover less readiness in the past. India is the only country where we have two brands, Lenovo and Motorola, and the dual brands have benefited. Now, we have 700 Moto hubs and we target to have 1,000 such hubs by the end of this year. We have more than 150 exclusive services centres,” said Sharma. He added that Moto would be positioned as an innovative brand in the country. India is Lenovo’s fifth largest market after Brazil. Yuanqing said with the dual brand strategy, Lenovo would have a “full portfolio of affordable products to be sold in the Indian market across entrylevel, premium and mainstream product categories.”
1691. How to exorcise India's unemployability curseResearch and industry voices have been drawing attention to a crisis in the Indian job market because of young graduates’ lack of skills. Rupamanjari Ghosh, vice-chancellor of Shiv Nadar University, spoke to Nandita Banerji about how to revitalise higher education, accelerate employability, and prepare for the future of work:Why are so many young Indian graduates unemployable?Business organisations today require fresh recruits who can hit the ground running. So training these graduates has to start inside higher education institutes. With the job market changing very fast in today’s world, many of the skills that were needed yesterday are not relevant today. Ongoing skill acquisition is critical for staying relevant in the industry, and to enable this, the key skill we need to impart to our students is that of critical thinking and creative problem-solving.Universities may offer specialisations in tune with the needs of industries or research. But the very nature of higher education should be to drive rather than just respond to industry requirements. We have to understand that an engineer doesn’t just need to build a dam that is structurally and mechanically solid, he also needs to think of the environmental and economic impact. You cannot solve a problem if you don’t know the context of the problem. How do you assess our higher education institutes? The problem with higher education institutes in India is that they reward implementation, not original thinking. They focus on creating clones instead of original thinkers. Students in Indian institutions have traditionally studied subjects in silos as most of our higher education system does not allow for an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to learning, which is often needed for real life problem-solving.Students need to be generators of knowledge, not just consumers. India should aim for a net surplus of knowledge. Our system encourages passive learning by promoting a “degree college culture” where the learners are just bombarded with information that they are expected to memorise. Learning is not fun but has become a rote process. How should the learning environment be improved?Investment is required for resources and infrastructure. You can’t have shortcuts. Students need to participate in the learning to remember. Learning by doing has to exist, otherwise, after each exam, there is a delete button on what was learnt. Research should be encouraged, not just for PhD students and faculty, but also for undergraduate students. The responsibility of learning is upon the student, but it is the task of the educators to facilitate that learning. Students need all the tools available to find their passion, which is rare, but if the student finds it, the chances of excelling are the highest. They need a flexibility during the learning process, along with supervision and mentoring, to be able to find that passion. The concept of university-wide electives can help with this. Choosing a combination of major and minor subjects can help with the exploration process. Can a top-down approach work?We need to start necessarily with a vision-oriented strategy, a top-down approach based on collective wisdom or national policies, and it has to merge with an inclusive, organic, bottom-up approach, which is stable. We need to look at both the content and method of delivery in the degree programmes. There has been an over-emphasis on mastering the fundamentals and being safe but an under-emphasis on exploration-driven learning and learning from failures. The mode has to be student-centric, active or participatory so that they ‘learn by doing’. The most important element in this is quality faculty as facilitators of learning. To enable the faculty we of course need resources, and leadership has to be competent and professional. What other tools do students need to be employable?People spend a lot of time in packaging, though the content is more important. But communication is one tool you need to impart no matter what. You also need to be open to possibilities. Industry-ready should not be the only focus. If you are industry-ready today, you may be jobless tomorrow. You need to be prepared for critical and creative thinking. That is the skill you need to learn. In what way will digitisation affect job prospects?School, college and university knowledge can’t skirt the issue of livelihood. People are worried about ‘the future of work’ and how the digital world is going to take away jobs, from even the ‘smart’ ones. The livelihood issue that our country is facing, starting with the farmers, has to become a part of our education. We are producing graduates who cannot find jobs and livelihood today but are worrying about the future of work, which is based on a phobia for digitisation. This fear is also present with graduates who feel nervous that they will lose their jobs because of digitisation. But the goal of higher education cannot be to mimic robots. You have to find out what is essentially human that robots cannot do. We need to be ahead of the timestamp.
