  128. Auto companies chart plans to woo women customersCHENNAI: Is Motown thinking pink? As women car buyers/users now comprise onefourth of the total car parc, companies are offering features to appeal to lady customers. According to some estimates, in the last five years, the number of women buyers for both new and used cars has doubled from 10-12 per cent to around 25 per cent. This is prompting car manufacturers to make more women-friendly variants focusing on safety, security, durability and convenience, which are the main factors for women in making their buying decisions.Car marketers say it is a segment set to grow exponentially in the future riding on, among other things, the growing popularity of automatic vehicles.Take Toyota Kirloskar Motor. The company launched Yaris sedan using its USP â€" 7-speed CVT (automatic) under Rs 10 lakh â€" to aggressively target women customers. As a result, around 15 per cent of total Yaris orders are already coming from women car buyers, which is more than three times the segment average of 3-4 per cent.“The CVT option has been made available across all grades considering the changing needs of Indian customers. Safety features include standardised 7 SRS airbags across all variants. There has been a positive trend in customer orders wherein 15 per cent of total Yaris orders were contributed by women as against segment trend of 3-4 per cent,” said N Raja, deputy MD, Toyota Kirloskar Motor.Part of the new trend is that women are now aspiring to drive bigger and more expensive vehicles, mostly for the sake of driving convenience and security. “Women feel safer in bigger and more powerful vehicles. For M&M, sales to women constitute 15 per cent of the total sales of TUV300 and KUVNXT. Our SUVs provide ease of driving and fatigue-free controls with AMT in the TUV300 and automatic transmission in XUV500. All our vehicles provide a high-seating position that is appreciated by women as it provides a commanding view of the road,” said Veejay Nakra, chief of sales & marketing (automotive division), Mahindra & Mahindra.Other companies like Nissan are focusing on connected vehicles to address safety concerns. “Recently, we conducted a survey that revealed the needs of men and women drivers for in-car technology and connectivity for safety of the loved ones. Road safety continues to be a significant cause of concern in our country and 53 per cent respondents expressed the desire to be connected to their family even while driving. We have introduced NissanConnect to provide a safe and effortless driving experience to our customers along with features such as E-call (panic button), manual SOS, 24x7 roadside assistance, vehicle low battery alert, and Intelligent Route Guidance,” said Peter Clissold, VP (marketing), Nissan Motor India.Nissan isn’t alone. Car brands are keeping the interest of women customers in mind while providing features like live car-tracking through app, pickup and drop facility for car servicing, SOS button, rear camera, 24-hour roadside assistance, parking sensors and automatic door closing system.
