  153. What it was like to work with KarunanidhiBy R ShunmugasundaramI first met Karunanidhi when I accompanied my senior, N Natarajan, to defend him in the black flag demonstration case in 1980. During the Emergency, a lot of DMK cadre had been detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). When Indira Gandhi visited Tamil Nadu in October 1977 after the elections, black flags were shown to her by the DMK, condemning the imposition of the Emergency. It became a riot-like situation and stones were thrown, though I don’t think she was injured. The MGR government, which had just come to power, filed a charge of conspiracy to kill Indira. A case was filed against Karunanidhi and others. We demolished the prosecution’s case. I defended Karunanidhi in several other cases, like the Constitution burning case in 1986 when DMK members burned the pages of the Constitution to mark their protest against the imposition of Hindi. The MGR government filed a case alleging that Karunanidhi and others had insulted national honour. They were all arrested but Karunanidhi refused to apply for bail. So we would go to his prison cell every day, discuss the case till trial was completed. He used to discuss the matter threadbare. Even when the DMK government was accused of leaking confidential information to the LTTE â€" charges that were never proven â€" he used to go through each and every line of the affidavit, making corrections, although he did not have any formal education in English. He never hesitated about appearing in court and would never be bothered about the accusations, whatever the case. His attitude was that “when you know you are innocent, nothing will happen”. He even chose to appear in court at the age of 92, when the Jayalaithaa government filed a criminal defamation case against him for an article he had written about her four-year term. We all advised him against appearing since he was in his wheelchair but he said he would. And he did. That was his last court appearance. On another occasion, while I was public prosecutor in 1998, some DMK men in Madurai got involved in stone pelting and damaging buses. He, as chief minister, instructed that all of them should be remanded, irrespective of their party affiliation. When I was attacked in 1995 while I was advising him about a private complaint the DMK could file against Jayalalithaa [Shunmugasundaram suffered multiple fractures and deep cuts], he felt guilty. He thought I was attacked because of him and so he would sit next to me in hospital and chat with me for a long time. Once, former attorney general K Parasaran came to see me and they both plunged into a deep discussion on characters in the Ramayana, which went on for an hour. It was difficult to figure out who was more knowledgeable about the Ramayana â€" the Vaishnavite Parasaran or the atheist Karunanidhi. He was a chief minister who would review cases even on Saturdays and Sunday evenings. We would usually meet him on Saturdays in his chambers in the secretariat to discuss the cases. He would grasp the details very well. One thing I observed in him was his eagerness to learn. Whenever he read something about a court proceeding, he would make a mental note of it and then ask me about it, even two or three days later. He was against superstitions. Once I accompanied him to the party headquarters. The staff requested him to enter the newly renovated office with his right foot. He chided them for such superstitions and firmly put his left foot first. At a personal level, he was a very affectionate person. He always held me in high regard though I was much younger than him. I was also very honoured when he came to conduct the wedding of my two children despite his health issues. After all, I am not related to him â€" I was just his lawyer, who became a party man. But that was the kind of affection one would get from him. I had worked with him for nearly 38 years. For me, his passing away is a huge personal loss. The author is DMK lawyer and former MP(As told to Indulekha Aravind)
  154. Inside view of India's white revolution 2.0Food writer Pawan Soni noticed a new trend recently. A second white revolution was slowly spreading across India.About 48 years after a movement transformed India from a milk-deficient nation to the world’s largest milk producer, Soni is seeing a flurry of queries on how and where to get pure cow milk. His Facebook platform has seen conversations around quality and safety of milk growing manifold â€" all thanks to premium milk.Farm to TablePremium milk is not another fancy term, says Kanika Yadav, who started Whyte Farms in Alwar to cater to areas in Delhi-NCR. It is fresh, unadulterated and uncontaminated milk delivered within 8-12 hours of milking, explains the teacherturned-entrepreneur who has 200 cows. The first few months of her entrepreneurial venture were spent in educating people in her social circle about premium milk. “I had to explain the difference between the dairy milk we get in pouches and what I was planning. A dairy is just a milk aggregator. It collects milk from villages, processes and packs it before sending it to retailers. The process involves mixing several varieties and may take up to four days. This eliminated freshness and one has no chance of knowing the source of the milk.”
