How Amazon delivers to 20,500 pin codes Humans follow processes, algorithms make decisions. This is the logic underpinning an Amazon Fulfilment Centre, the hightech warehouses that are primed to ship parcels with zero error and lightning speed, to impatient customers all over the country. Amazon says it reaches all of the 20,500 pin codes in India. The American retail giant now has 50 such warehouses across India. It recently opened DEL 5, a facility near Manesar in Haryana, its sixth such warehouse in the state. âThese fulfilment centres help us serve sellers on our platform as well as the buyers. When an FC opens in an area, a lot of small businesses in that region get a big boost,â says Akhil Saxena, VP for customer fulfilment at Amazon, during a recent tour of the facility.DEL 5 sprawls across 300,000 sq ft, an area that can fit 55 basketball courts. In the US, Amazonâs largest FC has a floor area of 1 million square feet. There is a lot of focus on safety. In the event of a fire alarm, the entire facility is evacuated in 90 seconds. Sunset or son rise? Future's tense for DMK Vaa, vaa, ThalaivarEzhundu vaa, Thalaivar(Come, leader/ Rise and come)This was the slogan heard most often outside Kauvery Hospital where Tamil Naduâs former chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi was fighting his final battle. Members and sympathisers of his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam began converging outside the gates from Monday evening, when it was officially confirmed that the 94-year-old iconâs health was rapidly deteriorating. The cries rose and fell, reaching a crescendo whenever the TV cameras swivelled in their direction. On Wednesday evening, as Karunanidhiâs cortege wound its way through Anna Salai and turned towards Marina Beach, his final resting place, another slogan was heard, if only briefly: âThalapathy vaazhgai (Long live, commander).â Karunanidhi had always been âThalaivarâ, while âThalapathyâ referred to his third son and working president of the DMK, MK Stalin. As eulogies are being written of the man whose death, without resorting to hyperbole, marks the end of an era in Tamil politics, there is also a realisation that it is the beginning of another. And Stalin is very much at the centre of it. All eyes are now on how the 65-year-old will steer the fortunes of the DMK and perhaps, at a later date, of Tamil Nadu itself. If Stalin had long been compared to the perennial bridesmaid, it was because of how tightly his father held the reins, even though he had been anointed the heir. The unkindest cut came during the 2016 assembly elections when Stalin was the face of the DMK campaign. Yet, his father said in an interview that if the DMK was voted to power, he would become chief minister, leaving Stalinâs supporters fuming but helpless.Like his father, Stalin joined the party when he was 14 years old, and rose up the ranks. âThere is a lot of contrast between the father and the son,â says TKS Elangovan, DMK MP. âKalaignarâs entry into politics was not for electoral gains, but for changing policies. He did not contest elections till 1957. But Stalin knows current politics. We have seen both their styles of functioning and the succession has been a natural progression.â What's eating up India's top fund managers A chief advantage of having lots of money is that you have access to opportunities to grow that money at a rate that lesser mortals can only dream of. Private equity funds are among such instruments. They pool money from wealthy individuals and entities (big global funds typically wonât take less than $50 million) and invest in aggressive and unconventional ways. Some of their bets fail but the others make spectacular returns. When things go well, investors end up with a rate of return that makes them very, very happy.Itâs a bare knuckled, high-adrenaline business at heart, involving buying companies and making tough decisions to turn them around or take them apart to unlock the value in their parts. Talented fund managers are coveted, and can make multi-million dollar commissions in the deals they engineer. It also involves heart-stopping levels of risk-taking and highstakes decision-making. In the financial institutions category, SBI held the highest 29.28 per cent equity in the company as on June 30, 2018.Axis Bank had 8.04 per cent, while Union Bank of India, Exim Bank, Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Central Bank of India and Allahabad Bank have stakes varying from 1.61-3.35 per cent."The interested ARCs/banks/NBFCs/FIs can conduct due diligence of these assets with immediate effect, after submitting expression of interest and executing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the bank," SBI said. The e-bids will be processed on August 20.SBI's gross NPAs rose to 10.69 per cent of the total advances at the end of June this year, as against 9.97 per cent a year ago. In value terms, they increased to Rs 2,12,840 crore, from Rs 1,88,068 crore. In the first quarter ended June of the current fiscal, SBI has reported a hefty loss of Rs 4,876 crore for due to higher NPAs or bad loans.Banks, especially state-owned, are sitting on bad loans worth lakhs of crores of rupees and are adopting aggressive approach to resolve them by making recoveries through various modes. He doesnât look up from his phone much. He sits, practically folded into himself, taking up very little room and shooting furtive looks across the café. At first glance, Singh appears a tad uncomfortable.Perhaps itâs because the Kanjurmarg resident spends all his waking hours â" usually from 6 pm to 5 am â" sitting in a tiny nook he calls his âhome officeâ. Like many hackers, though, Singh comes into his own when he is online. His awkwardness in public camouflages the fact that he is one of the worldâs best-known bug bounty hunters â" people who find and report online security loopholes in a tech or e-commerce firmâs business, usually in return for a monetary reward. In the last three years Singh has earned thousands of dollars by detecting more than 1,000 bugs. He reports about 30 or 40 vulnerabilities every month, with a personal best of 50 in one day. âIâm not interested in taking up a job,â says the 23-year-old. âI value my freedom too much. Anyway, I earn more from bug hunting than a techie does in a regular job, so why would I ever give this up?âBug hunting has become the most money-spinning kind of ethical hacking today, mainly because tech companies are ready to put down big bucks to secure their online operations. Bugs may cause a data breach or leak, or provide a way to either bypass the system (Ahmedabad-based hacker Kanishk Sajnani booked a flight ticket to the US for Re 1, and then repeated the feat on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad sector), or even shut it down entirely. This can result in business losses worth thousands of dollars, along with an irrevocable hit to both reputation and stocks, for globallylisted companies. Once a bug is reported, the hacker or researcher can claim a reward â" ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, based on the severity of the problem â"while the company moves quickly to âpatchâ it. - Bug hunting has become the most money-spinning kind of ethical hacking today, mainly because tech companies are ready to put down big bucks to secure their online operations.
