1399. Is Tesla good or bad? Hear the bulls & bearsBy Bailey Lipschultz, Elena Popina and Esha DeySay this for Elon Musk: the haters hate, and the lovers love. Still. His stunner about taking Tesla private â€" and all the will-he-or-won’t-he it engendered â€" changed precisely nothing. We asked our reporters to lay out the bull and bear cases.Bull CaseFirst of all, nothing makes the fanboys happier than when Elon Musk goes on Twitter to vent against the Wall Street machine. And if it takes a run-in or two with the market police to build a perfect car, so be it.Building â€" and selling â€" technological marvels is all the bulls want from the 47-year-old billionaire, and roller-coaster rides like last week have been a tolerable price of admission since the company went public eight years ago. How big will Tesla be? “BMW on steroids,” says New Street Research’s Pierre Ferragu. For proof of faith, consider that while Wall Street bean counters spent last week wondering if Musk had lost his mind tweeting about an $80 billion buyout, a bigger problem for bulls was the price â€" way too low. Ross Gerber, CEO of fund manager Gerber Kawasaki Inc., assigns Tesla a $100 billion valuation now, about 25 percent above Musk’s go-private price. And in five years, he sees it at $250 billion.“All this private talk I kind of wish never happened,” says Gerber. He compares Tesla to Amazon and Netflix. Like those companies, it’s all about the future for Tesla. It better be, considering that after rising 45 percent annually since 2010, the stock trades at 120 times earnings that won’t even arrive till next year. If Musk talks a lot, it’s because he’s trying to orchestrate a miracle, and it helps if people working toward that dream believe he’s a god.Make no mistake, the bulls say: he can do it. Sales of Tesla’s three offerings â€" the Model S sedan, the Model X SUV and the high-performance Model 3 â€" jumped 60 percent last year to 82,000, pushing revenue to almost $12 billion. And while the company’s never produced a dime of profit, analysts see that changing soon. If all goes according to plan in 2019, the company will record its first earnings under generally accepted accounting principles, then see it rise 12-fold in 2020 and double again in 2021, according to estimates compiled by Bloomberg.Worried about production? Musk has more than doubled vehicle output since the beginning of the year, reaching 53,339 units in the second quarter, nearly all of it thanks to the Model 3. He’s repeatedly upped the forecast for the spiffy new model, promising 2,000 cars a week in April, then 5,000 â€" a goal that required him to sleep many nights in the factory. He said Tesla would build 6,000 Model 3s a week by the end of July. The reason the pressure is on Tesla’s production schedule is that everybody loves the cars. Back-ordered for months, the Model 3s was recently called “a thrilling, modern marvel” by the Wall Street Journal. Opinions like that are far from rare.“At the end of the day, it comes down to a product,” said Bill Selesky, senior analyst at Argus Research Corp., who sees Musk’s technological disruptions thriving whether the company is public or private. “American consumers, Chinese consumers will see that the product Tesla offers is superior to other companies out there.”Beyond production goals and cash burn rates are intangible expectations tied to Musk as a serial innovator. Cathie Wood, founder and CEO of ARK Investment Management LLC, believes the company’s evolution from an automobile maker into a technology and software player presents almost upside that is almost unlimited.“He has bigger plans for Tesla than even we know right now,” Wood, who holds Tesla shares, said on Bloomberg TV Wednesday. “We’ve been very focused on his autonomous taxi network opportunity, which we think could take the stock to $4,000.”That would mark a rally of some 1,020 percent from Friday’s close. And the shorts â€" those soulless Wall Street marauders â€" would be wiped out for good. â€"Bailey Lipschultz and Elena Popina Bear CaseNobody disputes Elon Musk dreamt big when he thought up his plan to change the world with mass-produced electric cars. It’s all the other stuff rattling around in his brain that draws the bears on Wall Street. The case against Tesla Inc. touches on a lot of things â€" from cash burn to competition to how workers are treated in its factories. At its core, though, it centers on one person: a 47-year-old genius who opponents say is the wrong man to steer a $60 billion company to maturity.Musk’s problem, they say, is he acts like an entrepreneur while being employed as CEO of a 15-year-old company. He can’t sit still for the boring parts, as shown with his spats with analysts on earnings calls. No matter how much he apologizes, it doesn’t calm concern that his erratic behavior will end up being a fatal job distraction.“Investors have seen Musk as a visionary that was essential to his corporation and were willing to put up with him,” said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank in Cleveland. “At some point, that will end.”It was these anxieties that were kindled when Musk fired off a tweet saying he was considering going private at an estimated $80 billion without identifying his financing. With a board that seems only slightly less in the dark than the public, and Musk as silent as he ever gets on Twitter, imaginations ran wild. The stock surged and then tanked.Such outbursts are more than spontaneous rants, bears like Jim Chanos say. They’re designed to take attention off Tesla’s shortcomings: no earnings, no easy way to finance expansion, and no sense that any production ramp-up will last more a few months. In July, Musk said the company still expected to be profitable in the remaining quarters of 2018. If the past is any indication, say the naysayers, don’t hold your breath. “There is just so much more capacity expansion, so much more money required,” says David Whiston, a Morningstar analyst. All of this has done nothing to curb shareholders’ willingness to live with an eye-watering cash burn rate that has often required the carmaker to tap equity markets for money. And the stock has gone basically nowhere but up, soaring almost 21-fold from its initial public offering in 2010. Tesla trades at 4.4 times sales, compared with less than 1 for a traditional automaker like Volvo AB.While Tesla managed to reach its much-telegraphed â€" and repeatedly moved â€" goalpost of making 5,000 Model 3 cars per week in the second quarter, doubts persist that such a pace is sustainable. People wonder if the company was prioritizing short-term targets over its longer-term vision (a concern that Musk seemed to share when he announced his go-private plan). And then there’s the fact that the competition is beginning to show up in a more meaningful way in the electric-vehicle market. Jaguar, Audi, Porsche and Mercedes are all expected to come out with electric cars, starting as early as next year.Short-sellers love to bet against the stock. According to financial analytics firm S3 Partners, nearly 27 percent of Tesla’s freely trade-able shares have been sold short. Neuberger Berman Group’s Steve Eisman voiced some of the skepticism in a Bloomberg Television interview last month: “He’s nowhere in autonomous driving, as far as I can tell, and big competition is coming in his space next year.”Meanwhile, the older Model S and Model X are no longer shiny new things.“Normally three or four years into any car company’s platform, sales start decelerating,” says Cowen analyst Jeffrey Osborne. “When I see a Model S or X, I might go that, yes, it is a fancy car. But I have been seeing them for three or four years and there haven’t been any changes to make me excited about that particular vehicle.”Many of Tesla’s troubles â€" bombshell tweets, a staggering debt load, looming competition â€" would be solved if it started earning money. Until that happens, it’s a stock based primarily on hope.
1400. It's time India stopped taking Iran risk lightlyBy Julian LeeThe first U.S. sanctions have been reimposed on Iran with little sign of either side softening its position. Curbs on oil exports will follow in early November and the effect will be bigger and swifter than last time around. Oil forecasters don't seem to have grasped that yet. There’s no doubt that President Donald Trump will be tougher on Iran than Barack Obama was, with no gradual ratcheting-up of pressure. Importers are expected to have tapered off oil purchases by Nov. 5, when the curbs come into effect.Any waivers granted to buyers will still require much bigger cuts than they did last time, when a 20 percent reduction every six months was enough to win exemption from retaliation. And this time, Iran's exports of condensates, a light form of crude extracted from gas fields, will be covered by the sanctions. It doesn't matter that European governments oppose Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. Politicians and bureaucrats may work on "the continuation of Iran’s exports of oil and gas," but it’s companies, not governments, that buy Iran’s oil. The threat of exclusion from the U.S. market and banking system is enough to stop them buying it, international shipping companies from moving it and insurers from covering that trade.
1401. PVR to buy SPI cinemas in deal valued at over Rs 850 crMUMBAI: After years of on-again-off-again negotiations, Ajay Bijli-led India’s leading multiplex chain PVR Ltd has finally reached an agreement with South India’s largest premium cinema exhibitor SPI Cinemas to acquire the company at an enterprises valuation of over Rs 850 crore. In a cash and stock deal PVR will acquire SPI Cinemas, which operates brands like Sathyam Cinemas, Escape, Palazzo, The Cinema and S2, in key markets of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Mumbai.SPI Cinemas has a network of 76 screens (68 operational and 8 expected to commence operations soon) across 17 properties and 10 cities. The company also has a signed pipeline of over 100 screens which are expected to be rolled out over the next 5 years.Under the terms of the proposed acquisition, PVR would acquire 71.7% stake in SPI Cinemas from existing shareholders for a total consideration of Rs 633 crore, and will issue 1.6 million new equity shares of PVR, constituting approximately 3.3% of the diluted paid up equity share capital of the company for the remaining stake. At current share price of Rs 1,317 per share, PVR will issue new shares worth over 210 crore.EY India, the leading firm for media transactions in India, was the exclusive financial advisor on the transaction.ET had first reported on January 12, 2015 that PVR and SPI Cinemas are in talks and the deal size could be around Rs 750-800 crore. However, the talks failed at that time.Post the acquisition, PVR’s total screen count will increase to 706 screens across 152 properties and 60 cities. The acquisition will also propel PVR as the 7th largest cinema exhibitor in the world in terms of annual admissions at its theatres, which will be in excess of 100 million.SPI Cinemas, PVR said, has the highest occupancies across all organised multiplex chains in the country and is expected to achieve annual admissions of approx. 16-17 million in FY19 and revenues of Rs 410- 420 crore. SPI is also one of the key movie distributors in the state of Tamil Nadu.Kiran M Reddy and Swaroop Reddy, owners of SPI Cinemas, will continue to remain associated with the business and provide strategic guidance in integrating the business with PVR and create value for all the stakeholders, the two companies said. The transaction is expected to be closed in next 30 days and the merger process is expected to be completed in next 9-12 months.Ajay Bijli, chairman cum managing director, PVR, said “The acquisition of SPI Cinemas is of significant strategic value for PVR and will further cement our market leadership position in India.”Bijli said the acquisition will make PVR the undisputed leader in the South Indian market and provide an attractive platform to expand in that geography, which currently is highly under-penetrated in terms of multiplexes.“This transaction is a significant step in helping us achieve our vision of having 1000 screens by 2020,” Bijli said.“This combines two proven business models and will create significant value for moviegoers as well as all the stakeholders,” said Kiran Reddy of SPI Cinemas.
1402. IBC has put recovery process on fast track: Ficci SurveyInsolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) has put the debt recovery process on fast track and improved the position of banks, according to a Ficci survey.Banks which participated in the survey highlighted that IBC has also increased promoters' willingness to come forward for resolution at an early stage of default. To improve the resolution process, bankers suggested further enhancing of capacity, strengthening of the judiciary and empowerment of local level government officials, the seventh round of the FICCI-IBA survey said.Participating in the survey, 22 bankers suggested that extension of moratorium beyond 270 days should not be permitted."They also suggested increasing the tenor of debt for companies that have viable businesses but are currently suffering from over-leveraged balance sheets, along with a moratorium period," the survey said."The IBC has shown success with resolution of stressed assets even as the law continues to evolve. Banks continue facing challenges in lending even as GDP growth has bounced back while CPI inflation faces upward risks in the form of rising oil prices and increasing government expenditure," it said.About 67 per cent respondents have reported tightening of standards, steeply increasing from 28 per cent in the last round of the survey. In the first half of 2018, RBI hiked the repo rate by 25 basis points in June 2018.As per the survey, over half of the respondents (55 per cent) have increased their MCLR by up to 20 basis points during the period Jan-Jun 2018. Further, 27 per cent respondents increased MCLR by more than 30 basis points. Since then another hike in repo rate by 25 basis points was announced. In case of term deposits, 41 per cent respondents increased their rates by more than 50 bps on term deposits of tenure below one year, while 50 per cent did so for term deposits of one year or above. In view of the inter-departmental group set up to study feasibility of the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) formed by the RBI, bankers highlighted the benefits from CBDC.Introduction of CBDC would increase digitization and greater competition between banks for deposits, benefitting depositors, it said."Amongst the key areas of concern, respondents flagged the risk of increase in illegal transactions, cyber security threats, its use for speculative gains and effects to profitability and business model of banks.
1403. Air India grounds 19 aircrafts due to lack of spares: ICPADebt-laden Air India has grounded as many as 19 aircraft, including nine Airbus A321, due to want of spares, resulting in a significant loss of revenue to the carrier besides flight cancellations, one of its pilots' body has alleged.Besides, there are also aircraft fleet swaps which result in last minute change of inventory, the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) said in a letter to Air India chairman and managing director Pradeep Singh Kharola today."Almost 23 per cent of the Air India fleet is grounded for lack of spares. To put this into perspective, aircraft worth approximately USD 3.6 billion or approximately Rs 25,000 crore (at todays list price) are lying idle in the hangars," the ICPA alleged. While as many as eight Airbus A321 aircraft, of the total 20 such planes operated by Air India, are out of operations at various stations for lack of spares, four A319s are also on ground for one reason or the other, it said. The A319 aircraft is the workhorse of the domestic network operating on high-density routes and has the maximum seating capacity, the ICPA said adding that "(due to the grounding of these planes) there is a significant revenue loss on a daily basis.""The Airbus A319 fleet situation is only slightly better. Of the 22 Airbus A319 aircraft in the fleet, four aircraft or 18 per cent of the fleet is not available for operations. The Airbus A320 fleet fares better but only because it currently consists of a significant number of newly acquired Neo planes," it said.Of the Boeing 777 fleet, five aircraft are in the hangar while two Boeing 787 Dreamliners, of the 26 in the fleet, are also on ground, the ICPA said."Additionally, a significant number of flights are getting cancelled/rescheduled on a daily basis. There are also aircraft fleet swaps which result in last minute change of inventory resulting in non-optimal revenue management and utilisation," the ICPA said in the letter.Questioning the airline management as to why the aircraft were being allowed to remain on ground, the ICPA said, "All of this is having a significant impact on the bottom-line of Air India.
