1110. Ikea boss says he's in India for long haulThe world’s largest furniture and home products company IKEA is unfazed by the changing policy landscape in India and was in the country for the long haul, global CEO Jesper Brodin told a select group of journalists here.Brodin’s take is significantly different from that of a few foreign retail executives who recently expressed wariness about the government’s latest draft policy that seeks to ring in sweeping changes to e-commerce business.“Our business is long term. Of course, politics follows its own cycles,” Brodin said in Hyderabad, where the largest Swedish retailer opens its first outlet in India on Thursday. “For me and for us, there is logic in what India is doing for the development of India and we have to trust and believe that and it will continue to happen. So I would say we are not sleepless over that.”Brodin said India is a long-term investment and one of the biggest future markets for IKEA and the company is prepared for some eventualities. “India is a big commitment for us and as a group, we are prepared to take risks for years to come,” he told a select group of reporters in Hyderabad. The IKEA store in Hyderabad’s HITEC City is spread over 400,000 sq ft.“By 2025, we need to bring a certain volume to our business in order to get an impact and profitability,” Brodin said at the store on the eve of its launch. “So, one store is too little volume for us to become as good as we want to.” IKEA would require at least need 8-10 stores in India to leverage economies of scale for the company in India.IKEA said it has been aggressive in pricing by offering 1,000 of the total 7,500 SKUs priced under Rs 200 and 500 of them below Rs 100 and the company seeks to build a long-term market rather than chasing short-term profitability. “We have taken a very offensive strategy, meaning we step in bravely into low prices,” the global head for the Swedish retailer said.“Coming years, we will exponentially increase our efforts into digital interface with the customers,” the CEO said. About 5% of IKEA’s 38 billion euros global revenue in 2017 came through online sales.IKEA looks to upwardly revise investmentsIKEA, which had agreed in 2013 to invest Rs 10,500 crore to open 25 stores in India, is now looking to speed up rollout of stores and upwardly revise its investments here, IKEA India deputy chief executive Patrik Antoni said.“We see India more positive today than we thought when we arrived. We arrived with a positive outlook. But we see a very strong demographic growth and the economy is strong,” Antoni told ETon the sidelines of a media conference on Wednesday.“We see bigger opportunities now,” said Antoni, adding that the changed economic environment and exploding retail market should help IKEA India expedite the rollout of its India stores and amplify investments.â€"CR Sukumar(Rasul Bailay was in Hyderabad at the invitation of IKEA.)
1111. No meatballs? How Ikea serves different global tastesBy Alyssa McDonaldIkea’s blue-and-yellow stores are instantly recognizable: iconic, monolithic and now, as India's first store throws open its doors to the masses, operating in more than 400 stores in some 50 countries. But while every branch of the world's largest furniture retailer has that most unmistakable whiff of flat-pack conformity, regional differences do exist â€" not least where their famed Swedish meatballs are concerned. In many countries, the Ikea business model has been subtly tweaked to fit local preferences and customs. Opening hours are altered, menu options are adjusted and very occasionally, women are airbrushed out of catalogs. Here’s how a multinational company built on the principles of mass production caters to national tastes. The RestaurantThe cafeteria in Ikea’s new Hyderabad store will have 1,000 seats; what it won’t have is Swedish meatballs. Out of respect for Hindu beliefs, the pork-and-beef dish will be dropped from the menu in favor of chicken meatballs, biryani, samosas and vegetarian hotdogs. It’s not the first time the retail giant’s best-known meal has got mixed up in religion. In 2013, traces of horsemeat were discovered in batches from a Swedish supplier, forcing Ikea to release statements in Malaysia and United Arab Emirates reassuring customers that the pork-free “Swedish” meatballs in those countries were halal certified (and not, in fact, produced in Sweden). Most often, menus are tweaked simply to appeal to regional tastes: Crayfish in Japan, fish and chips in the U.K., shawarma in Dubai. In a daring move that would pit popularity against convenience, Ikea’s menu may yet become available without a diner having to go anywhere near a stick of furniture: the company is reportedly considering opening standalone restaurants in the U.S., although “no decisions have been made,” according to a spokesperson. The CatalogUnsurprisingly, the product lines in the catalog vary somewhat from country to country: the kitchenware section in India will feature spice boxes and idli (rice cake) makers, according to the AFP, while its Chinese cousin goes heavy on woks, cleavers and steamers. The catalog itself has been more controversial. A woman-free catalog was produced last year for Israel’s ultra-Orthodox community by the company’s local franchisee, featuring photographs of men and boys only. Ikea later apologized, but the furor can’t have come as a surprise: in 2012 a Saudi catalog appeared with some photos of women airbrushed out, sparking a similar response. The Floor SpaceIn densely-populated Hong Kong, where flats are typically small and streets are crowded, Ikea is a place to relax as well as shop. The soft-furnishing section is often crowded with locals taking an air-conditioned break from the city, lounging around on the sofas. Meanwhile, in mainland China, shoppers make themselves even more comfortable: it’s common to find people sleeping in the display beds and armchairs, a habit that isn’t tolerated so readily in other parts of the world. Limited space is an issue for the company itself in crowded European capitals like London, Stockholm and Madrid, where it’s opened small-scale stores of less than 1,000 square meters. That’s good news for the maze haters who can’t stand following the arrows around a typical big-box Ikea, which typically sprawls across 25,000 square meters.Home Sweet HomeThe local touches aren’t just in-store â€" they follow you home. Hong Kong deliveries are priced depending on the number of steps up to your apartment (perhaps not unreasonable in such a high-rise city). In the U.S. and U.K., you can have your self-assembly furniture built for you using TaskRabbit, an online service that matches freelance labor to one-off jobs, which was acquired by Ikea in 2017. In London, having your kitchen assembled could set you back anywhere between about £13 and £52 ($17 to $67) an hour. Meanwhile in Dubai, the local assembly service will charge you about 300 dirhams ($82) for the entire job. Does the thought of all this global mega-retail have you itching for a long evening browsing the modular storage systems? Head to Hyderabad. In a part of the world where many people’s day starts and ends late, Ikea’s newest branch will be open to 11pm â€" a full three hours later than branches in the chain’s home country. If, however, you’ve suddenly gone right off the idea of leaving your tastefully furnished house, don’t worry, you can now shop online for your stainless steel shelving, your printed cotton pillowcases â€" and sometimes even your meatballs â€" in all but a handful of Ikea’s markets.

1113. ZEE pulls out all content from Jio due to disagreement over pricingSubhash Chandra-promoted Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEE) has removed all its content from Mukesh Ambaniowned Reliance Jio, including 35 live TV channels and more than 2 lakh hours of video-on-demand content after failing to arrive at an agreement on price. While the two companies have remained tight-lipped about the reason for the move, highly placed sources told ET that both sides couldn’t agree on a viable commercial agreement. It was on Monday August 6, when ZEE management decided to withdraw the content from Reliance Jio Digital Services, terminating a multi-year deal the two companies had signed in mid-2016.On Tuesday, all the 35 channels of ZEE, including popular channels like Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Zee Marathi and others went dark on Jio TV, the live TV app exclusive to Jio subscribers. The Jio TV app allows users to watch live TV channels with up to 7 days of catch-up TV content.ZEE also removed its library content â€" non-air shows and movies â€" that was part of the deal and was offered to Jio subscribers via Jio Cinema app. “There are commercial issues. Jio has grown too quickly and today has over 215 million subscribers. Many subscribers consume live TV channels on Jio TV. ZEE seems to be looking for a better commercial arrangement, which Jio did not favour,” said a highly placed source with direct knowledge of the development.A Jio spokesperson told ET that Jio is committed to offering the “widest range” of digital services and applications and entertainment options to its customers on its technology platforms. “Jio is working with all the participants in the eco-system in a way that creates win-win relationship for consumers, broadcasters and others alike,” the spokesperson said without confirming the development.A ZEE spokesperson refused to comment on the development. In its AGM last month, Mukesh Ambani, chairman, Reliance Industries, announced that Jio had 215 million users on its network within 22 months of operation. He mentioned that data usage on Jio platform was at 240 crore GBs per month, while video consumption had grown to 340 crore hours per month.
1114. Facebook plans to change functioning of India BrassFacebook is planning a major change of face for its India operations, which oversees 250 million users. The US-headquartered social network major will rework how its top management in India will function, according to internal emails reviewed by ET.A new country head, the search for which is on, will be designated managing director and vice president (MD & VP), India and, to begin with, will report to David Fischer, Facebook’s global VP of business and marketing partnerships, who’s based in the company’s US headquarters. Fischer is leading the headhunt for a new chief in India.Earlier India heads were designated as MD, India and they reported to Facebook’s Asia-Pacific head in Singapore. Facebook has been without an India head since October 2017.The new VP & MD will be responsible for global marketing sales, partnerships, policy (except content policy), and communications. These moves may eventually lead Facebook’s India operations to get delinked from its Asia Pacific setup, some people familiar with the thinking inside the company said.Currently, Facebook India’s functional heads for communications, partnerships, marketing, sales reported to Asia Pacific office executives in Singapore. The company’s previous two India MDs â€" Umang Bedi and Kirthiga Rao â€" were mostly responsible for sales, without much of a say in the other functions, people quoted earlier said. Facebook did not respond to a detailed ET questionnaire.A company internal mail written by Joel Kaplan, Facebook’s vice president of global public policy, says: “India is our fastest-growing market and we’ve concluded as a company that we need to change our organisational structure to set us up for the greatest success”.Kaplan also writes: “There is significant complexity in the market across multiple functions and operating as an integrated business externally in India has proved challenging.”Ankhi Das, Facebook’s director of public policy, India, South and Central Asia, and her team, will “report directly to this new VP”. Das, who joined Facebook in 2011 from Microsoft, is regarded by many as Facebook’s most power ful official in India currently, given the market’s growing importance from a policy point of view, as compared to product or even sales, where it contributes less than 1% to Facebook’s overall revenue. As of March 2017, Facebook India Online Services Pvt Ltd earned about Rs 341.8 crore in revenue for FY 2016-17, a 93% year-on-year increase from FY 2015-16, when it earned a revenue of Rs 177 crore.“Ankhi [Das] will have a dotted line to me [Kaplan], and her team will also remain connected to me and our global team â€" continuing to participate in all of the leadership and other policy meetings â€" to ensure our strategy in India is aligned with our overall policy objectives,” the email said.Facebook is currently battling perception and policymakers over multiple allegations of misuse of data and privacy.Last week, Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s IT minister, told Parliament that the Central Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate this matter “with regard to possible misuse by Cambridge Analytica.”In May, ET and other news publications had reported that several candidates had been interviewed for the job for India head, including Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan, Star India MD Sanjay Gupta, Tata Sky CEO Harit Nagpal, and former Karnataka IT Secretary, Srivatsa Krishna.
