This included the Vijay Mallya and Aircel-Maxis cases.According to information now officially made available to the cabinet secretary, the case against Vijay Mallya was initially registered under IPC Section 409, which is essentially for criminal breach of trust, until Asthana took over the case and converted it into a case of fraud under IPC Section 420.The first chargesheet was filed under Asthanaâs watch in January 2017. It was only after this, the CBI special director has informed the government, could dual criminality be established under UK laws, making it possible for extradition proceedings to start. IKEA is opening India chapter with samosas After 12 long years of planning and six year after it made an announcement, Ikea is finally opening its first store in India tomorrow. The world's largest furniture retailer is all set to open its Hyderabad store on August 9, the first of 25 it plans to open in India by 2025.The first Ikea store is a 13-acre complex in Hitec City on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The showroom will display some 7,500 products and nearly 1,000 of which would sell for for less than Rs 200 a piece. Ikea expects six million customers in a year.Ikea had earlier said that it decided to move the date to August 9 from July 19 as it needed some more time to live up to its expected quality commitments towards customers and co-workers.The Ikea teams had visited over 1,000 homes in India with varied income levels and lifestyles to understand their needs and dreams before finalising around 7,500 varieties of home furnishing items to be made available at its India stores.Ikea expects its restaurant business to drive higher footfalls at its stores in India, a sharp contrast to other markets where customers flock in to buy its popular ready-to-assemble products. The Hyderabad store will have a 1,000-seater restaurant, Ikea's biggest globally. Half of its restaurant menu will consist of vegetarian options, including idli and sambar, samosa and vegetable biryani, sourced from about 25 vendors, mainly women-led social enterprises. Chicken will replace Ikeaâs trademark beef and pork meatballs, in deference to Indian cultural preferences.âWe internally call our restaurant or food business the best sofa-seller as it takes time to buy furniture, so we need food for people to stay. In India, for every customer on the cash counter, we will have one paying at the restaurant, too. Thatâs nearly 50% of the customers as Indians love food,â Patrick Antoni, deputy country manager at Ikea India, told ET in June. The global furniture giant also plans to start e-commerce operations from Mumbai next year. It plans to offer online sales in cities where it can support them with fulfilment, delivery and assembling services. âWe would like to start online sales to begin with from Mumbai and we are quite sure that in a couple of years we will be available for online shopping in a lot of cities,â chief executive Peter Betzel said in Hyderabad last month.IKEA sees potential to set up large or small format stores in at least 49 Indian cities with a population of more than a million each over the years. âAfter Hyderabad, we will open stores in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chennai and others. We are curious to try multi-channel sales â" large format, small format, with store, without store online,â Betzel said. Upgrading power projects may lead to savings of $3 bn: GE MUMBAI: New capacity addition in Indiaâs thermal power sector may be hurt by the problems in the beleaguered sector but there is a huge opportunity in upgrading existing projects, which could potentially lead to savings of $3 billion in power bills and reduce emissions, Andrew DeLeone, managing director of engineering major GEâs India power business told ET.The Indian thermal power sector has been crippled by a lack of power purchase agreements, which has rendered projects stranded, many other power units are running below capacity and some are facing delays in payments. Private sector companies are reeling under heavy debt and while the government has taken measures to revive the health of state-run power distribution companies, industry players don't see recovery in the foreseeable future.âEconomics of new thermal power plant is very difficult right now. But that also gives us the opportunity to run the existing plants better and make them more profitable. There is a very good investment case for investing in improving efficiency and flexibility of power plants. For the amount you spend, you get payback in four years and you reduce carbon emission too,â DeLeone said.GE is currently executing power projects totalling 12,000 megawatts (mw) in India, of which a majority is based off low carbon emitting technology. The company pegs new capacity addition in thermal power at 6-8 gigawatts per year, but sees a strong pipeline for unit upgrade given its interactions with private power firms.âWe feel India will see around 6-8 gigawatts of new thermal power capacity every year but there is 70-80 gigawatts of capacity that can be upgraded for efficiency and flexibility, this may happen over the next five years. This upgrade can save the country more than $3 billion dollars in power bills and at the same time reduce carbon emission,â DeLeone said.Companies like L&T, JSW Energy, Bharat Forge, Thermax, BGR Energy, among others formed joint ventures with foreign partners and committed huge investments to set up units to manufacture thermal power boilers and turbine generators in India. The industry is running at 25-30% capacity utilisation as new orders have been far too less in the last few years. Despite governmentâs attempt to revive the state-run power distribution firms, key customers to power generators, with the Uday scheme, discoms are still reluctant to enter power purchase pacts. PremjiInvest pumps in Rs 400 cr in Gold Plus Glass MUMBAI: PremjiInvest, the family office of Wipro chairman Azim Premji, has invested Rs.400 crore in Gold Plus Glass Industry Limited (Gold Plus), the domestic float glass manufacturer and a leader in the architectural glass segment. Gold Plus currently operates two float glass lines (clear glass and tinted glass) with a combined installed capacity of 427,000 tonnes per annum and commands a 16% share of the current installed float glass capacities in the country, said a company statement. This investment from Premji Invest will help the company increase its capacity by an additional 730,000 tonnes per annum. Over the next 3-4 years, Gold Plus will invest over Rs. 2000 crore for adding two new float glass lines in India, it added.Subhash Tyagi, the founder and chairman of Gold Plus Glass Industry Limited said, âThe investment from Premji Invest will help us accelerate our expansion plans and also enable us to increase our market share. The growth in the demand for float glass in India is expected to be robust on a long-term basis."PremjiInvest manages at least $3 billion of assets in private firms as well as in the public markets. In June, PrejiInvest had picked up 6% stake in Kishore Biyani's Future Retail Ltd, for $250 million. It also holds 4% stake in Future Lifestyle Fashions Ltd (FLF), another Future Group firm. In January, the fund had invested in Indiaâs largest mortgage lender HDFC Ltd, along with other investors KKR, GIC, Canadian pension plan Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System and Carmignac Group. Bengaluru-based PremjiInvestâs investments include e-commerce major Flipkart, FabIndia, Lenskart, Shubham Housing Development Finance company and Wildcraft India, US based artificial intelligence unicorn Apttus, US based cloud based service providers Anaplan Inc and ServiceMax Inc. Data showed some 250 of BSE500 companies have released their quarterly number as of August 7, logging a combined 10 per cent YoY rise in net profit at Rs 90,025 crore. As many as 25 of them have together reported a 320 per cent jump in profit. For instance, Intellect Design Arena posted Rs 43.50 crore profit for June quarter, clocking a 5,500 per cent rise over Rs 0.70 crore reported for the same quarter last year. Net sales swelled 24 per cent YoY. The stock is up over 21 per cent since the beginning of this financial year.Brokerage firm Emkay Global Financial Services has a âbuyâ rating on Intellect Design with a target price of Rs 265. âOrder traction is intact, as backlogs grew 14 per cent QoQ to Rs 1,190 crore. The company added four large deals in Q1, including a large Rs 100 crore deal from a European Bank, indicating improved business traction even in an advanced market,â Emkay said in a report.Ceat is next on the list, having posted 4,346 per cent YoY rise in net profit at Rs 72 crore against Rs 1.60 crore in the same period last year. BASF India and Emami reported 3,496 per cent and 2,463 per cent YoY rise in Q1 profits.Reliance Securities is bullish on Ceat with a price target of Rs 1,750.âCoatâs operating performance should improve further in the ensuing quarters with a likely improvement in volume and product mix. The companyâs new products like Milaze X3 and Puncture safe tyre have received good response and would help it gain market share. Its improving brand image and network expansion would help grow volumes,â the brokerage said in a note. The stock is also looking attractive after the recent fall in share price, it said.Emkay has an âaccumulateâ rating on Emami with a 12-month price target of Rs 610. âWe expect Emami to deliver sales and earnings CAGR of 16 per cent and 20 per cent over FY18-20E, but certain downside risks remain,â Emkay said in a report.Among others, Dr Reddyâs, Tata Power, Chennai Petroleum Corporation and Prism Johnson posted YoY quarterly profit growth of between 300 per cent and 650 per cent, while net sales expanded between 4 per cent and 13 per cent during the quarter. Others like JSW Steel, Oberoi Realty, Glaxosmithkline Pharma, Ashok Leyland, Heidelberg Cement and Jubilant Food have also logged profit growth of between 200 and 300 per cent YoY. Oberoi Realty posted more than 200 per cent jump in sales during the quarter.Motilal Oswal has a âbuyâ rating on Oberoi Realty with a price target of Rs 616. âWe remain positive on Oberoi Realty due to its strong balance sheet with ample room for leveraging to buy new land and strong brand equity, which helps it command premium pricing and enter into JD/JV/DM contracts,â the brokerage said.Among others, BSE500 index companies like Bharat Financial Inclusion, Apollo Tyre, Central Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Mahindra CIE Automotive, Atul Ltd, Gateway Distriparks, Tejas Networks, Jindal Stainless, Network 18 Media, IFB Industries, Phillips Carbon Black and L&T Technology Services posted profit growth in excess of 100 per cent for the quarter.Global research firm CGS-CIMB is positive on Bank of Baroda (BOB) with a price target of Rs 220.âBOB is still among the best placed public sector lenders, with strong capital ratios and improving loan growth, and we expect asset quality to improve from here on. A revival in net interest margins as low yield loans are substituted with higher yield loans and emphasis on quality loan growth are positives, which will improve profitability. We cut our FY19/20F earnings forecasts by 13.5 per cent/11.7 per cent to reflect higher ageing related NPL provisions. We value BOB at 1.2 times FY20F P/BV, based on a sustainable ROE of 11.4 per cent. A prolonged NPL cycle is a risk,â it said in a report.Sterlite Technologies, General Insurance Corporation, Indiabulls Ventuers, Supreme Petrochem, Mahindra Lifespace, BHEL and Escorts saw profit growth in excess of 90 per cent during the quarter. Gatekeepers or censors? How tech manages online speech Apple, Google and Facebook this week erased from their services many â" but not all â" videos, podcasts and posts from right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his Infowars site. Twitter left Jonesâ posts untouched. The differing approaches to Jones exposed how unevenly tech companies enforce their rules on hate speech and offensive content. There are only a few cases in which the companies appear to consistently apply their policies, such as their ban on child pornography and instances in which the law required them to remove content, like Nazi imagery in Germany. When left to make their own decisions, the tech companies often struggle with their roles as the arbiters of speech and leave false information, upset users and confusing decisions in their wake. Here is a look at what the companies, which control the worldâs most popular public forums, allow and ban.Facebook at the Center of the StormOf all the tech companies, Facebook has faced the biggest public outcry over what it allows on its platform.Whenever the social media company has been pressed to explain its decision-making, it has referred to its community standards, a public document that outlines Facebookâs rules for users. The company has outright bans against violent content, nudity and terrorist recruitment propaganda. The rules on other types of content, including hate speech and false news, are more ambiguous. When asked about Infowars last month, Facebookâs chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, said he wouldnât remove pages hosting popular conspiracy theories of the type Jones is known for sharing. Zuckerberg then turned the conversation to the subject of the Holocaust, defending Facebook users who deny the Holocaust occurred. His awkward explanation prompted outrage, and less than a day later, Zuckerberg offered a public apology. Now, less than a month later, Facebook has banned Jones and removed four pages belonging to him â" including one with nearly 1.7 million followers â" for violating its policies. The ban means that while Jones still has an account and can view content on Facebook, he is suspended from posting anything to the platform, including to his personal page or any pages on which he is an administrator. In a post, Facebook said it banned Jones and his pages for âaccumulating too many strikes.âThe company has refused to say how many strikes is too many, however. It has also not answered questions on how long Jones will be banned or whether Facebook will be reviewing similar content posted by other right-wing conspiracy theorists.Itâs unclear whether the actions Facebook has taken against Jones signal a new approach by the company against hate speech or whether it is, once again, responding to an isolated case because of public pressure.Googleâs Wide Gray AreaOf all the major online services, Googleâs YouTube is probably the most explicit about what is and is not allowed. But even with its published âCommunity Guidelines,â YouTube has wrestled with the subjective interpretation of those rules.Users can flag videos that they believe violate those guidelines, which include bans on videos with nudity or sexual content or incite violence. YouTube will then review those flagged videos for potential violations. In addition, YouTubeâs computer systems also comb the site for videos that violate its rules. But many videos operate in a gray area. Even in YouTubeâs own explanation of âhateful content,â the company calls it is a âdelicate balancing actâ between free expression and protecting YouTube users.YouTube still hosts videos of Ahmad Musa Jibril, an Islamic cleric from Dearborn, Michigan, whose sermons were viewed by one of the knife-wielding attackers in the terror attack on London Bridge last year. His sermons posed a quandary for the video service because the cleric does not directly call for violent jihad and is, therefore, not in clear violation of community guidelines. YouTube now presents Jibrilâs sermons behind a warning that the video has been deemed âinappropriate or offensiveâ by part of the YouTube community.Jones incurred two content violations from YouTube over the last year. In February, YouTube said he had violated its policies regarding harassment and bullying when a video claiming that David Hogg, one of the outspoken student survivors of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was a âcrisis actor.âIn Jonesâ most recent violation, last month, YouTube took down four of his videos that included hate speech against Muslim and transgender people as well as footage of a child being shoved to the ground. YouTube said the videos had violated its policies pertaining to hate speech, harassment and child endangerment.Twitter, the âFree Speech Wing of the Free Speech PartyâTwitter has been more permissive of controversial content than its social media peers, with executives calling it âthe free speech wing of the free speech party.â While Facebook removes nude or gory images, Twitter is more tolerant of adult and violent content. Rather than deleting these kinds of images, Twitter tends to hide them behind warnings that require users to click through before they can see the content.Twitterâs approach has provoked plenty of criticism, particularly around its lax handling of harassment. Celebrities like actress Leslie Jones have been temporarily driven off the platform by swarms of abusers.Jack Dorsey, the companyâs chief executive, has said that the company needed to do better at policing trolls. In December, Twitter said it would promote âhealthy conversationâ by using a combination of human moderation and machine learning to detect trolls and minimize the appearance of their posts on the platform.Although the parents of several Sandy Hook shooting victims are suing Jones for defamation, a Twitter spokesman said that neither Jonesâ personal account nor his Infowars account are currently in violation of Twitterâs policies. Tweets questioning the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, remain live on both accounts. The simultaneous takedowns across YouTube, Spotify and Facebook are troubling, said Kevin Bankston, the director of the Open Technology Institute at New America, a nonpartisan research organization in Washington. The number of bans in quick succession from multiple companies raised the specter that this could have been influenced by outside political pressure rather than a straightforward application of company policies, he said.Twitterâs decision to allow Jones and Infowars to stay on its platform may reflect a commitment to consistent policy enforcement, Bankston said.âA Twitter thatâs not accountable to its own rules is not accountable to anybody,â he said.In a series of tweets late Tuesday, Dorsey suggested that other tech companies had caved to political pressure in their decision to remove Jones from their platforms and argued that journalists â" not Twitter â" were better suited to fact-checking Jonesâ claims.âHe hasnât violated our rules,â Dorsey wrote. âWeâre going to hold Jones to the same standard we hold to every account, not taking one-off actions to make us feel good in the short term, and adding fuel to new conspiracy theories.âApple: âIâll Know It When I See ItâWithout a social-media platform, Apple typically avoids the content controversies that ensnare its peers. Yet the iPhone maker still makes many decisions about what apps, podcasts, songs and videos it will make available on its popular services.Apple on Sunday banned five of the six Infowars podcasts from its podcasts service. Apple determined the sixth podcast, RealNews with David Knight, did not violate its policies, which prohibit podcasts that âcould be construed as racist, misogynist, or homophobicâ or that depict âgraphic sex, violence, gore, illegal drugs, or hate themes.â In the past, Apple has also removed neo-Nazi songs and the Nazi anthem from iTunes.Appleâs decision to ban the Infowars podcasts was surprising partly because an app that Infowars introduced last month was gaining steam on Appleâs App Store. From July 12 through Monday, the Infowars app was, on average, the 33rd most popular news app on the app store, according to App Annie, an app analytics firm. On Tuesday, after news of Jonesâ bans spread, the Infowars app was Appleâs fourth most popular news app, outranking those of every mainstream news organization.Apple reviews all apps that apply for its app store and determined that the Infowars app did not violate its rules. Apple posts extensive policies for apps that it distributes, including prohibitions on âcontent that is offensive, insensitive, upsetting, intended to disgust, or in exceptionally poor taste.â The policies give a series of examples, including content that is defamatory, discriminatory, mean-spirited, overtly sexual, encourages violence or includes ârealistic portrayals of people or animals being killed, maimed, tortured, or abused.âHow Apple decides which apps violate those policies is more vague, however. Apple said in its policy: âWe will reject apps for any content or behavior that we believe is over the line. What line, you ask? Well, as a Supreme Court Justice once said, âIâll know it when I see it.â And we think that you will also know it when you cross it.â - Tech cos often struggle with their roles as the arbiters of speech and leave false information, upset users and confusing decisions in their wake.
- Infosys and Cognizant both saw attrition cross 20% in the quarter to June, implying that they are now losing a fifth of their workforce. Wiproâs attrition touched 17%.
- In the process, clients spent $100,000-200,000 on pilot digital projects, learning how the solution works for their organisation and once they were convinced of its benefits, they began expanding their budgets.
- The move is prompted by govtâs view that slow response were leading to the spread of rumours and false news.
- Apple is set to include about 75% of the features that are on Telecom Regulatory Authority of Indiaâs DND app.
