- Industry representatives say challenges are more on account of state tax authorities lacking familiarity with some export schemes. State officers, they said, demand different set of documents and withhold refunds even after they have been sanctioned by the Centre. This is especially so in cases of services exports.Sometimes refunds are rejected due to minor issues such as change in the jurisdiction of officers. The jurisdiction office appearing on the GSTN portal may be different from the actual jurisdiction in the record of the department, and that sometimes leads to issues despite instructions from the CBIC that the issue should not hold up refunds. The official said the government could look at providing a reconciliation mechanism for exporters to understand against which claims they have received the refund amount for integrated GST rebate claim.Experts say the government must provide some new formulation to assuage exportersâ concern on refunds.âIntegrated GST refunds have streamlined largely except for internal container depots, but input tax credit refund still remains an issue,â said Ajay Sahai, director-general of Federation of Indian Export Organisations. âThe government needs to address the situation expeditiously.âAnita Rastogi, partner at PwC, said, âIt is an expectation from the government to formulate a solution to eradicate the concern of businesses.Ideally, the methodology may be prescribed where the restriction shall be applicable only on those outputs which are exported after using the inputs procured under the said notifications.â

- German carmaker Mercedes-Benz does not yet see a "viable business case" to launch electric vehicles in India due to lack of clear policy and incentives to sell such models in the country, a senior company official said Thursday. The luxury automaker, which Thursday introduced updated version of its C-Class sedan in the country, priced between Rs 40 lakh and Rs 48.5 lakh (ex-showroom), said that due to high import duties on completely built units (CBUs) pricing of electric vehicles (EVs) is highly uncompetitive as compared with vehicles with internal combustion engines. "We are also considering to launch electric vehicles in India. But quite frankly an electric policy would help. A policy which would outline the long term perspective, framework and parameters under which we could sell," Mercedes-Benz India Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Michael Jopp told . In the current scenario with no policy, no framework, no incentives and clearly higher cost, the company do not yet see a viable business case for EVs, he added. Jopp said globally Mercedes is moving towards electric mobility. "By 2022, we will have ten battery electric vehicles in our portfolio globally. We also expect that by 2025 the share of electric vehicles would be between 15-20 per cent," he said. To make EVs viable in India, the company has been requesting the government to consider reducing the import duty on battery operated EVs so that they can compete with company's locally produced cars, he added. "This will help accelerate market for EVs, which would also help in expansion of charging infrastructure...with the growth of the segment we could also investigate local manufacturing (for EVs). "We would also be very happy if the government would also consider plug in hybrids because they would help in transition from combustion engines to battery electric vehicles," Jopp said. The company's decision to bring in EVs will depend upon policy framework and it would not "launch for the sake of launching", he added. "If we launch we would like to sell and...at this point we are observing and we will take decisions once time is ready," Jopp noted. Currently, CBU cars, whose value is more than USD 40,000, attracts an import duty of 100 per cent. The company, however, will also keep investing in internal combustion engines, Jopp said. "We also see an ongoing relevance of combustion engines so that from our perspective for all markets, including India it is important to offer choices to customers. That is why we will keep investing in diesel engines because that is a clear preference (of customers)," he added. The new C 220 d Prime is priced at Rs 40 lakh, C 220 d Progressive is tagged at Rs 44.25 lakh, while the C 300 d AMG line is priced at Rs 48.50 lakh. Commenting on the launch, Jopp said: "Selling over 30,500 units since its inception in India, the C-Class has been one of the best-selling luxury sedans for the Indian market and remains a key contributor to our continued success in the market". The company has already launched seven products in the first half of the current year and would introduce few more during the year, Jopp said. "There will be new launches this year and continue our product offensive next year as well," he said, adding that the company aspires to retain leadership position in the luxury segment. In the first half of the current year, the company has sold 8,061 units, a growth of 12.4 per cent over same period of last year.
- MUMBAI: Jet Airways passengers, who suffered extreme physical discomfort, pain, and bleeding in some cases in a flight Thursday, vented their ire on the airline accusing it and the Mumbai airport authorities of severe callous service and even with threats of legal action.âThis wasn't a little incident....you should be glad you weren't on board...I was. it was the worst nightmare you can think of...I was almost blacked out..if this is crew mistake as being claimed, then I am going to sue them for involuntary manslaughter,â tweeted Satish Nair, an executive at a rating agency who was on board.Nair told ET, that the Jet executives were âcluelessâ for the most part. They first reacted only after a woman passenger complained of a suffocation and asked what needed to be done. The Mumbai-Jaipur flight 9W 697 took off at 5.55 am in the morning. 10 minutes into takeoff, oxygen masks were unclasped and lowered from above passengersâ seats, leading to acute panic. Several passengers complained of a severe earache. Some started to bleed from their noses while others started to bleed from their noses and ears.Darshak Hathi, a director with The Art of Living Foundation, a non-profit organisation, said there was just an announcement to breathe in and out of the lowered oxygen masks. There was no explanation given on what had happened, despite repeated queries to the crew. The plane was ferried back to the Mumbai airport within an hour.On ground too, no one explained what had happened, nor were any consolations of apologies offered, said Hathi. Only half of the people stranded at the airport got refreshments after repeatedly asking for it. Jet announced the passengers would be accommodated on the next flight at 9:30 am. That too was delayed to 10:45 am, he added. âWorse was the reaction and response of the airport authorities,â said Nair. âThere were no paramedics near the plane when it landed. All the thirty odd bleeding passengers were stuffed into one ambulance. Once we reached the terminal, medics looked into the affected cases. The rest of us were stranded on the baggage claim area with no designated space for us to go to. Jetâs ground staff there didnât even know such an incident had happened. There was no standard operating procedure being followed. I believe, Jet, the Mumbai airport staff and even the regulator are to be blamed,â said Nair.Five of the most critical passengers were taken to the Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai. âIt was severe trauma, the effects of which wonât go in just a few hours or even days,â Ankur Kala, a businessman and one of the five told ET, pointing to splotches of blood on his jeans.Kala said he hadnât taken a decision on whether he would take action against Jet and added he wasnât in a position to give more details. He was flanked by Jet executives at the hospital.Onboard, passengers faced a condition called barotrauma, caused by sudden, extreme changes in atmospheric pressure.âUsually, a person is not used to sudden changes in air pressure. When a person is exposed to rapid changes of high pressure, it can lead to rupture of blood capillaries especially in the nose since it is one of the richly supplied vascular organs,â Harshad Nikte, a Ear Nose and Throat specialist at Apollo Hospitals, told ET.âBleeding is sudden in response. Barotrauma to sinuses is a common occurrence and usually manifests as facial pain headache, earache and at times sinusitis. Symptoms begin within 48 hours after barotrauma and can last till 7 days. If symptoms persist beyond 3 weeks after the treatment then a CT scan is required,â he added.Amod Patil, the ENT specialist tending to the affected Jet passengers at Nanavati told ET that while cases of barotrauma arenât rare and can be caused also during adventure sports such as scuba diving, he hadnât in his four years at the hospital come across a case of ear and nosebleed due to faulty cabin pressure on board an aircraft. The trauma caused something called mild conductive deafness or a limited loss of hearing in them. He, however, called all five passengers âstableâ and said the conditions could be reversed with medication. In a statement, Jet said 144 of the 166 passengers of the original flight were accommodated in a subsequent flight. 17 of them âwished to travel at another point in time.âThe airline said a team accompanied the five most critically affected passengers to the hospital.âThe airline will continue to offer necessary medical care and attention to the concerned guests as required,â it added.(With inputs from Divya Rajagopal)
- NEW DELHI: The government is examining the tax refund mechanism for exporters under goods and services tax (GST) and may announce some measures over the next few days to streamline the process and speed up repayments. âSome measures are being looked atâ¦,â a senior official told ET, adding that these could be unveiled by the weekend.Exporters say delay in refund under GST impacts business and raises working capital cost. Last week, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said the government would take steps to boost exports. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has taken several steps to ease the process of refund for exporters, but some issues persist. It has had a detailed discussion with industry representatives on the issues faced by them in getting refunds seamless. The government is now looking at all the procedures, as also execution issues at the central and state government levels, which are impacting exporters.According to the official, it could consider some procedural relaxations to make refunds seamless and easier. The restriction on inputs imported under some exemption notifications retrospectively is in focus, the official said, adding that the government could consider restricting refund of taxes only for those exports that use inputs under some exemption notification.
- Just about 12 hours earlier, India had failed to pick a Hong Kong wicket 34 overs â" only the third time ever that theyâd failed to do so in the first 33 overs of a game. But on a day that it mattered, they had Pakistan on the mat within the first 20 minutes of play. After the first four overs, the scoreboard read Pakistan â" 3/2. Despite the partnership between Babar Azam and Shaoib Malik, it was going to be difficult with the openers out. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were still to bowl. Babar Azam, who many say is as talented as Virat Kohli, is confident but quiet â" he hardly spoke a word over dinner the night before when four of his teammates had come to an event in Dubai. Azam had been fine touch, and here he was navigating the bowling and steadily bringing Pakistan back in the game. Until a moment of magic. Kuldeep bowled from the back of his hand. The multiple revolutions on it looked outstanding on television and it had enough to sucker Azam out of his crease. Just as he was about to meet the delivery, it broke away from him. He had failed to read the turn. It was the wrongâun and a perfect one at that. There was just enough deviation to beat the bat and hit the stumps. Kuldeep had broken the partnership and also Pakistan. With the talisman gone, it was just a matter of time before the rest of the batting imploded. It was always going to be Indiaâs game. The advantage extends beyond the match with both the teams having already made it to the next stage. It could push Pakistan to an extra measure of caution when they next face each other in the tournament. Despite a few dropped catches, one by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and one by MS Dhoni, the Indian bowlers always looked in control of things. They were disciplined and focussed â" essential in a high-pressure game. Pakistan, mercurial in patches, was what we could never understood about them â" selfdestructive. They imploded like they have done so many times, one of the most unpredictable team in world cricket. This same side can score 325 on September 23 against the same opposition. 162 was never going to trouble the Indian top order on Dubaiâs pitch, while struggling Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik got a bat as well. What is worrying for Pakistan is that Mohammed Amir hasnât been the bowler we have expected him to be since the Champions Trophy. This meant too much was expected of Usman Shenwari. While he did beat the bat on occasion, even he canât contain India to 162. As we head into the next stage of the tournament, it is difficult to pick a favourite. The loss of Tamim Iqbal notwithstanding, Bangladesh have quality. But his absence also makes it a test of the top order for them. The middle-order, though, is settled with Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah all capable. Afghanistan clearly have the best spin attack in the world at the moment and are the dark horses of the tournament. Pakistan, the loss still hurting, can still make it back into the tournament like they did in the Champions Trophy and India, in familiar conditions, have already started to leave England far behind. While India won both their encounters, it is fair to say the tournament continues to be an open one. It can throw up a surprise winner in the final at the end of the month at the Dubai International Stadium. India, with the Champions Trophy experience they have, know that beating Pakistan in the group stages is not the same challenge it will be to beat them in the knockout rounds. With India performing without their best batsman, Kohli, and Pakistan making up for Amirâs extended poor form, this is anybodyâs tournament now.Asia Cup 20018: Detailed Coverage
