- NEW DELHI: The government is now getting set to grant initial approval to the long-drawn acquisition project for 114 new fighter jets for over $20 billion (Rs 1.4 lakh crore), with a seventh contender flying into the competition, amidst the ongoing political dogfight between BJP and Congress over the Rs 59,000 crore contract for 36 French Rafale jets.Defence ministry sources say the Defence Acquisitions Council, chaired by minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is likely to consider âacceptance of necessity (AoN)â for the 114-jet project later this month or early next month.Under the proposed project, while the first 18 jets will come in âa flyaway conditionâ in three to five years after the contract is inked, the rest will thereafter be produced in India under the new âstrategic partnership (SP)â policy in a joint venture between the selected foreign aviation major and its Indian partner.
- Just months after Samsung inaugurated its new mobile phone manufacturing facility in Noida, which is also the worldâs largest mobile factory, the tech giants is reportedly exploring a plan to move its TV production unit out of India.Samsung is reportedly looking to shift its Chennai facility and plans to start importing TV units from Vietnam, it's largest production hub. As per a ToI report, the company has already alerting its local suppliers about its withdrawal plans. The Chennai-based TV manufacturing plant of Samsung produces around 3 lakh units every year.Ironically, the shifting plan has come come just months after joint inauguration of its Noida facility by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Korean President Moon Jae-in. The Noida facility was seen as a big boost for the âMake in Indiaâ initiative.According to the report, the move comes after the Union government introduced import duty on parts used in manufacturing TV panels. The government, during the Union Budget, imposed an import duty on "open cell", which is one of the most important parts of a TV panel. Initially, a 10 per cent duty was imposed, which was later cut down to half after protests from TV manufacturers. The Korea-based tech giant, in July had expanded the capacity of its mobile phone manufacturing plant in Noida from 67 million per year to 120 million. âOur Noida factory, the worldâs largest mobile factory, is a symbol of Samsungâs strong commitment to India. We âMake in Indiaâ, âMake for Indiaâ and now, we will âMake for the Worldâ. We are aligned with government policies and will continue to seek their support to achieve our dream of making India a global export hub for mobile phones,â Samsung India CEO HC Hong had said in inaugural function. However, denying reports of any shift out, a Samsung spokesperson told ToI that the company "remains deeply committed to India and that no decision has been taken so far in terms of moving out the production of TV units."The revenues generated by Samsung in India was pegged at $8 billion in 2016-17.
- Reliance Infrastructure on Monday said it has won a Rs 200 crore arbitration award against National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)."A three-member Arbitration Tribunal in its unanimous award on August 31, 2018, has asked NHAI to pay Rs 150 crore by November 29, 2018, to Reliance Infrastructure. NHAI will have to pay interest at the rate of 12 per cent per annum on the amount if they do not pay Rs 150 crore by the deadline," the company said in a BSE filing. The tribunal has also awarded Reliance Infrastructure compensation at the rate of 13.5 per cent of actual revenue for the loss of revenue suffered due to change in location of toll plaza, it added.Reliance Infrastructure said this is payable from March 2017 till the end of concession on January 14, 2038. Net present value of this future cash-flow is estimated at over Rs 50 crore.Reliance Infrastructure said the need for arbitration arose due to prolonged delay in providing land by the NHAI to TD Toll Road Pvt Ltd (TD Toll Road), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure, resulting in cost over-run during construction and change in location of toll plaza. The contention of TD Toll Road that the project was delayed resulting in cost over-run during construction and location of toll plaza resulting in loss of revenue was upheld by the tribunal.TD Toll Road has designed, built and are operating 87 km long 4-lane National Highway (NH45) road connecting Trichy and Dindigul in Tamil Nadu.Shares of Reliance Infrastructure were trading 0.62 per cent higher at Rs 480 apiece on BSE.
