- roots in the IL&FS fiasco. A trade in the bond markets, where DSP Mutual Fund sold commercial paper of DHFL at a higher yield, triggered speculation that there could be ratings downgrade in the housing finance company.DSP sold commercial papers â" short-term debt instruments issued by company â" of DHFL worth â¹300 crore at a yield of 11%. The yield was way higher than the rate at which the previous deal happened, sparking speculation that DHFL could be facing liquidity issues, which has been strongly denied by the company.Kalpen Parekh, president, DSP Mutual Fund, said the sale of the paper at higher rates was an interest rate call rather than a credit call.âWith regards to the sale of commercial paper of DHFL, the last deal in the security happened at yield of 10.25-10.5%. Since our volume was â¹300 crore, the yields went to 11%.Even after this sale, we continue to hold Dewan Housing Finance paper worth around â¹800 crore in our debt portfolio,â said Parekh. The talk in the mutual fund industry is that the reason for the sale of DHFL paper at higher yields could be partly because of the recent downgrade of IL&FS papers.DSP Credit Risk Fund holds a 3.26% stake in IL&FS Energy Development Corporation, a subsidiary of IL&FS Ltd. The value of these securities was marked down by 50% in its portfolio recently following the rating downgrade to D of the company by rating agencies.Speculation is rife that DSP Mutual could be witnessing redemption pressure in its debt schemes, which could have prompted the fund to sell DHFL papers.DSPâs Parekh denied the fund is seeing redemption pressure.âWe have been bringing down duration in our fixed income portfolios in line with our view on interest rates. We are reducing duration across maturities and across issuers. In September, liquid and money market funds see outflows on account of advance tax payments and as a fund house we budget for it. There is no redemption pressure on us and our flows are in line with the market. Our average AUM (asset under management) continues to be around â¹95,000 crore, which is nearly the same as last month,â said Parekh.
- sticking to the stocks that we have in NBFC and private banking space, Basant Maheshwari, Co-founder & Partner, Basant Maheshwari Wealth Advisers, tells ET Now. Edited excerpts: In the light of NBFC selloff, how much of Fridayâs selling do you think was technical in nature and how much was it because of realistic factors? When I say realistic factors, I mean over ownership, cost of capital moving up and valuations getting stretched. How much of Fridayâs selling had a fundamental angle to it? This does not seem to be a systemic problem and I will tell you why. Had this been a systemic problem, the dollar would have crossed 73, bond yields would have gone up straight on and in todayâs market, the different entities are so synchronised with each other that if one of them falls, the other falls too. There was a time when we used to say may the best survive. Now for the best to survive, even the worst has to survive and that is what the government does. So if IL&FS has a problem, it goes and catches that. Coming back to Friday, there was sheer panic. How can you say there is no panic if the stocks are falling 40%, 50% but this is not PC Jewellers or Vakrangee. There is a business. People have taken home loans. Of course, we do not own Dewan Housing. It is not a recommendation. But these are genuine businesses because somebody has gone and dumped some paper at 11%. It suggests that there is a lack of buyers for that kind of paper. But they all get passed on. Interest rates will go up. You will pass it on. Ultimately, what you lend at should be more than what you borrow at. It is a mix of that but obviously the axe now is falling harder on anything where there is suspicion. After two-three-four months of some sanity in the market, again the same thing starts. So two-three months back, we had Vakrangee, PC Jewellers but those were different companies. You cannot compare apples and oranges. Like that. Is this decline the time to buy and lap up HFCs or would you say one should stay away till the froth settles down? In the HFC space, most of the companies have faltered on growth. We sold off a stock like Can Fin a long time back. That has come down in the growth pattern. Repco Home Finance is not growing so fast. PNB Housing has got its own stake sale issues. Obviously, when the stake sale happens, things should rectify themselves. So, Dewan and Indiabulls were in some way the only two stocks, that were in some way growing at a decent pace. But if there is so much of issue somewhere, it makes sense for any investor to sit back and analyse why he wants to buy it. Do you want to buy it just because the stock has fallen 10% or do you want to buy it because you are genuinely interested/convinced about the fundamental attributes and the economic character of that business? If you are convinced about the economic character of that business, you could go in and buy it but then, we have our own names in the NBFC space and the private banking space and we are sticking to that.

- The portable emissions testing system (PEMS) is seen attached to the exhaust of a red 2016 Volkswagen AG Golf TDI emissions certification vehicle being tested inside the California Air Resources Board Haagen-Smit Laboratory in El Monte, California, U.S., on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015. The VW vehicles were programmed to activate pollution-control equipment while being tested for compliance with EPA and the California Air Resources Board standards, ensuring that emissions met legal standards; afterward, the car's software switched off the controls so the carsâ performance was maximized while allowing far higher pollutant levels.
