- President Donald Trump on Friday said he wants to stop the subsidies that growing economies like India and China have been receiving as he wants the US, which he considers as a "developing nation", to grow faster than anybody. Addressing a fundraiser event in the Fargo city of North Dakota, he also accused the World Trade Organization (WTO) of allowing China to become a "great economic power". "We have some of these countries that are considered growing economies. Some countries that have not matured enough yet, so we are paying them subsidies. Whole thing is crazy. Like India, like China, like others we say, 'oh, they're growing actually'," Trump said. He said that they call themselves developing nations and "under that category they get subsidies." "We have to pay them money. This whole thing is crazy, but we're going to stop it. We're going to stop it. We have stopped it. "We are a developing nation, too, OK? We are. As far as I'm concerned, we are a developing nation. I want to be put down in that category because we are growing, too. We are going to grow faster than anybody," Trump said amidst applause from the audience. Attacking the WTO, Trump said he thinks that the World Trade Organization was probably the worst of all. "But a lot of people don't know what that is, that allowed China to become this great economic power". On the trade deficit between the US and China, which has led to a tariff war between the world's top two economies, he said, "I'm a big fan of (Chinese) President Xi Jinping, but I told him, 'we have to be fair'." "We can't let China take USD 500 billion a year out of the United States and rebuild itself," he added. The President also said that the US should get paid for securing the wealthy countries from the outside harm. "I think it's fine, but they got to pay us for this. We're watching the whole world and they take it for granted. "For years and years we've been protecting these countries. They're making a fortune. They've had very little military cost. We have the biggest military cost in the world. Most of it goes to protecting outside countries, some of whom don't even like us," Trump said. "We're protecting countries that have -- I got to say, they do have respect for us now, but they didn't have any respect for us, and they got to pay. They got to pay, you know, when they're wealthy," he said.
- NEW DELHI: Even as a section in the industry lobbies for incentives to make pure electric vehicles, leading carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and global auto component leader Bosch have urged the government to consider hybrids and alternate powertrains for incentives. The government removed hybrids from its FAME incentive policy in phase I and the goods and services tax was also brought in line with the conventional powertrain vehicles forcing many carmakers to recalibrate their roll-out plans for hybrids. In his address at the first Global Automotive Summit, Osamu Suzuki, chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation said, âIn order to answer to the need of better life style and meeting expectation of Indian customers, as well as resolving environmental challenges at the same time, I think it would be essential to promote not only electric vehicles but also hybrid and CNG vehicles too. In this sense, we seek the kind support of Government in terms of policy formulation,â said Suzuki. This request from the chairman of largest car maker in India happened at a time when it announced its commitment to fully electric small car, with fleet of 50 Wagon R Evs to be rolled out for nationwide testing.Majority of the automakers have been urging the government to have a fuel agnostic approach to technology. Anti-hybrid stance from the government compelled Hyundai Motor India and Mahindra & Mahindra to put their plans on the backburner. With the lack of charging infrastructure, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota believe that hybrids is an appropriate bridge to full electrification. Suzukiâs alliance partner and a leader hybrid technology Toyota believes that hybrid vehicles can deliver over 25-45% in fuel efficiency and help in reducing not only air pollution but fuel imports.Toyota has sold over 12 million hybrids in the world, which has helped reduce 94 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and saved 35 million kilolitres of fuel.Chairman of Toyota Takeshi Uchiyamada in his address stated, âEach country has its own energy policy and takes on challenges toward global environment in a different way. Therefore, various electrified vehicle technologies are needed.âOn challenges of EVs, Suzuki said increasing penetration of electric vehicles in India obviously it cannot be done without sufficient charging infrastructure development. In this regard, he is looking forward to proactive leadership from the Government of India.âIn India, there is significant number of people who are eagerly waiting to have their own car.It is said that EV will be approximately 30% in 2030, which means huge population of vehicles would still be Non-EV at that time,â added Suzuki.Denso a Toyota company, Suzuki along with Toshiba will be commencing production of lithium-ion battery for automobile at its battery plant in Gujarat in 2020 which will serve both electric and hybrid vehicle options.Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner assured that despite push on electrification, the internal combustion engines will continue to play a critical role.He said that with the evolution of technology, carbon footprint for EVs and combustion engines are not too far.
- Civil engineering has registered the lowest placement rate of a mere 38% between 2012-13 and 2015-16 among six engineering streams approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). At a time when the construction sector is one of the fastest growing, this apparent lack of demand for civil engineers comes as quite a surprise.Data from the AICTE shows that over this period chemical engineering had the highest placement rates. Surprisingly, the electronics and communication stream too had a relatively low placement rate of 48%. Only three streams -- chemical engineering, computer science and mechanical engineering â" saw more than half their graduates getting place. The data also shows a considerable variation in pass percentages across streams, with civil engineering once again having the lowest rate of 39% and electronics and communications registering a 74% success rate in clearing the course.Mechanical engineering continues to be the most popular engineering stream with over 20 lakh students enrolling for the courses approved by the AICTE followed by computer science, civil engineering, electronics and communication, electrical engineering and chemical engineering. Mechanical engineering has recorded 47% pass outs in these four years, but placement in the stream is barely 50%. Chemical engineering is the least preferred branch with just 86,000 students enrolling in four years.Interestingly, between 2013-14 and 2017-18 only 55% of AICTE approved engineering seats were filled and 214 institutes were closed during this period. Over 77 lakh students enrolled for various engineering streams during this period, over threefourths of them boys.According to industry experts, the percentage of engineering seats being filled has come down over time because of an explosion in the number of seats. Another factor, they suggest, is that those graduating out of engineering colleges do not always possess skills that industry requires resulting in their not getting hired. The data also shows a considerable variation in pass percentages across streams, with civil engineering once again having the lowest rate of 39% and electronics and communications registering a 74% success rate
