  127. Coalition tightrope-walking apart, Kumaraswamy has also come under criticism for his frequent temple visits, numbering over 40 in 80 days and a lack of clarity over when his ambitious farmer loan waiver of over Rs 30,000 crore would be implemented. Meanwhile his brother and PWD minister HD Revanna has drawn flak for ordering a flurry of transfers and promotions in his department. The 2019 Lok Sabha polls will be the next big test for the Congress-JD(S) coalition in Karnataka, which sends 28 MPs to Lok Sabha.Kumaraswamy’s swearing-in ceremony had attracted a slew of opposition leaders, from West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to BSP chief Mayawati and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, intended as a message of opposition unity to the BJP.Both JD (S) and Congress confirm that preliminary talks have already begun on seatsharing. But political analyst and Jain University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Sandeep Shastri says the parties are still speaking in different voices and they need to decide on how to present a united front to the voters.“I hope the urban local body election results are an indicator to the coalition that there is a groundswell of support for them but they need to create the right framework. If a postelection coalition can trump the BJP, a preelection coalition can be even more effective,” he says. The BJP, in turn, needs to realise that factionalism within the party would remain a challenge and it cannot take victory for granted. “For the BJP, Karnataka presents a unique situation where the local and national units don’t seem to be in sync,” adds Shastri. For now, Kumaraswamy exudes confidence about how the coalition will perform in the Lok Sabha polls, estimating it could win up to 22 seats. Anything even close to that would be considered a coup for a union that detractors expected to come apart from its inception.Together, Congress-JD(S) will easily win 20-22 seats in LS polls: HD KumaraswamyEdited excerpts from an interview with the Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy:Your government has completed 100 days but reports persist about instability and infighting. From Day 1, this has been a stable government. Some sections, particularly our BJP friends, are unnecessarily spreading the news that this is an unstable government and that it will fall. All that is just BS Yeddyurappa’s assumption. He is living in a (fool’s) paradise â€" why should I disturb him from that dream. There is no question of instability. This government will complete five years. What about allegations that former CM Siddaramaiah is unhappy with the coalition? That’s just people spreading rumours with the aim of dislodging this government. Siddaramaiah is very friendly with us. He is the leader protecting this government. It will be under his leadership that this government will complete five years. When will the cabinet expansion take place? That will happen in the third week of September, along with the appointment of chairpersons of various boards.Have you started working towards your strategy for the Lok Sabha elections? The Congress and the JD(S) have started discussions internally on how to move forward, especially about seat-sharing. Ultimately, Congress leaders will send their recommendations to their high command and our national president will sit with them and decide how many seats each party will contest. The discussions are still at a very preliminary stage. Both Congress and JD(S) target the same section of voters. Won’t that be a problem?I think it will only strengthen both parties, when we unite. Together, we will easily get 20 to 22 seats (out of 28).
  128. Net-long positions on Brent crude -- the difference between bets on a price increase and wagers on a decline -- rose 7 percent in the week ending Sept. 4 to 416,742 futures and options, according to data from ICE Futures Europe. Long-only bets on the international benchmark also climbed.Net-long wagers on the U.S. crude benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, increased 3.9 percent for the same period to reach a one-month high, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission said on Friday. Meanwhile, futures in New York posted their biggest weekly decline since July, as the rout in Turkey and other markets raised concerns.“This whole emerging market situation is sapping a lot of energy from commodity markets,” Bart Melek, head of global commodity strategy at TD Securities in Toronto, said by phone. “Risk appetites have waned somewhat. That’s not particularly good.”U.S. government data on Thursday showed crude inventories in the nation’s largest distribution hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, rose for a fourth week, with total stockpiles of gasoline and distillates also expanding.Hedge funds’ continued faith in higher U.S. prices was notable coming at the end of the summer driving season, when demand starts to tail off, said Chris Kettenmann, chief energy strategist at Macro Risk Advisors LLC in New York.Kettenmann sees reason to believe WTI can rebound, given that it’s trading at about a $9 discount to Brent. That should encourage exports providing a “relief valve” even if inventories keep rising.“Still a bit surprised by the degree of the selloff,” said Tamar Essner, an analyst at Nasdaq Inc. in New York. “We now have a tug of war between two stories -- the increasing enforcement of sanctions on Iran countered by looming risks to demand growth.”OTHER POSITIONS:Long-only WTI positions rose by 4.7 percent in the week ending Sept. 4, while shorts surged 19 percent.Money managers increased net-bullish bets on U.S. diesel by 6 percent, the CFTC said. They cut the net wagers on a gasoline rally by 4.3 percent.

  • The week gone by marked the first death anniversary of braveheart Gauri Lankesh, whose murder shook the nation and thrust her in the limelight -- but all too late. • By Nishant AroraNEW DELHI: That he speaks impeccable English despite being a Chinese comes from the fact that Jack Yun Ma, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of e-commerce behemoth Alibaba, graduated from Hangzhou Teacher's Institute with a major in English and later became a teacher, imparting lessons in the same language.Strange are the ways in which tech honchos function: News about a change of guard came via his interview on Friday with The New York Times -- at a time when US-China trade war is at its zenith -- and not from Alibaba itself. As Ma turns 54 on Monday -- the day when he will reportedly make his retirement official which also happens to be Teachers' Day in China -- he is leaving behind a legacy which will not be easy for his successor to carry forward. When it came to India, Ma, who also serves on the board of Japanese corporation SoftBank Group, always had big plans.Although not directly present in the online marketplace, Alibaba's diversified portfolio in India include top-of-the-line investments in digital payments platform Paytm, in Cloud computing via Alibaba Cloud, in the digital media space via UCWeb and several innovation initiatives that makes the country an attractive destination for the $420 billion conglomerate. As the Indian e-commerce space flourishes -- with Walmart's acquisition of Flipkart and Amazon pouring in millions of dollars -- recent media reports indicated that Ma has plans to invest into Reliance Retail Ltd which, if true, will see Alibaba have physical presence and a bigger retail clout in India. The opportunities are immense for the current $35 billion Indian e-commerce sector which would be worth over $100 billion by 2022 -- with a growth of around 25 per cent from the current level -- a joint PwC-Nasscom report said on Friday. In collaboration with Alibaba, Paytm has also launched its AI Cloud computing platform for developers, start-ups and enterprises in India. Alibaba Cloud, the Cloud-computing arm of Alibaba Group, provides computing services to businesses of all sizes globally.According to the company, Paytm AI Cloud processes and stores their consumers' data locally in servers located in India -- a demand from the government that has resulted in its rival WhatsApp and Apple deferring their digital payments services in the country. Not just the private sector, Alibaba is also increasing its footprint in the government sector. On September 3, the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Alibaba Cloud to adopt cloud computing frameworks within the government model. The MoU envisages leveraging Alibaba's Cloud and Smart City technologies for sustainable farming, integrated traffic management, smart city management, small and medium enterprises and skill development programmes.India is a "very important" market for Alibaba in its global strategy, its Chief Executive Officer Daniel Zhang told IANS last year. "Globalisation is one of our key strategies for Alibaba. As part of this strategy, India is a very important topic. India is a very important market for us to look at," Zhang said.Ma -- who will remain on Alibaba's board of directors and continue to mentor the company's management after retirement -- met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 and discussed ways to empower small businesses in the country. They never met again and Ma too didn't reveal much about his India plans, but his company has been making inroads into a country that provides massive opportunity owing to a growing Internet and smartphone user base amid an increasing digital drive across enterprises. With a net worth of more than $40 billion, Ma is the founder of Zhejiang-based Jack Ma Foundation which will help realise his new dream of philanthropy in education.A devotee of Chinese martial art form Tai Chi, Ma started Alibaba in 1999 from his modest apartment in Hangzhou, the capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, with 17 other people (remember that Jeff Bezos started Amazon from a garage in Seattle).Like Bill and Melinda Gates, who are often seen in India on various charity tours, we may also see Ma more in the country to fulfill his philanthropy goals, but his days at the helm have already helped Alibaba realise the potential the India market has beyond China. His instructions must be clear to his successor -- focus on India that is not yet saturated like China and growing by leaps and bounds across the technology domains in which Alibaba has expertise.
  • The opposition BJP is asking why you are not reducing the tax on petrol and diesel,” a reporter asked Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy at a press conference last week. Pat came Kumaraswamy’s reply: “Why don’t they raise it with their own leaders at the Centre?” The minister for social welfare and Congressman, Priyank Kharge, seated next to the chief minister, joined in the ripple of laughter.Later, at the chief minister’s chamber, in between meeting visitors and fielding phone calls which he at times attends with a “Hello brother”, the film producer-turned politician reiterated to ET Magazine the message his government is keen to convey.“There is no question of instability. This government will complete five years,” says Kumaraswamy. A hundred days into his new innings, he appears to be at ease, both in his role as chief minister and as one of the central figures in an unlikely coalition government of the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress. This is a far cry from July, when he broke down during a felicitation ceremony, dramatically saying that as chief minister of a coalition government, he was swallowing his pain, just as Lord Shiva swallowed poison. Even today, it is no mean task to steer the uneasy marriage between the Congress, which has 78 seats, and the JD (S), with 37.Hand of SiddaramaiahOne cannot dismiss the hand of former CM Siddaramaiah in turning the rumour mills of dissent. The Congress leader shares an acrimonious history with JD (S), the party he quit in 2006 because he felt its leader and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda was only promoting his family members, including son Kumaraswamy.Forced by circumstances to unite with a party and people he had once bitterly opposed, Siddaramaiah’s periodic dinners for legislators as well as statements that he did “not mind” becoming CM again have added fuel to the rumours. He has also frequently shot off letters to the CM, asking him to roll back the tax on fuel and the reduction in rice given through the public distribution system. Currently on a sojourn in Europe, Siddaramaiah’s moves are being keenly watched. The Congress leadership dismisses these rumours. “His statements (on becoming CM again) were taken completely out of context. Siddaramaiah is a member of the Congress Working Committee and part of the high command,” says AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, in charge of the Congress in Karnataka. While acknowledging that running a coalition was not easy, particularly when the two parties are used to being opponents at the grassroots level, Venugopal adds that there is now a broad understanding between the two about facing elections together. The parties’ performance at the urban local body polls, the results of which were announced on Monday, was a boost for both the Congress, which won 982 seats, and the JD (S), with 375, while the BJP won 929. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee chief Dinesh Gundu Rao says a common minimum programme will soon be released and adhered to. A cabinet expansion is also on the anvil, and is expected to be carried out in the third week of September, a move that might assuage some of the dissenting voices.
  • Focussing aggressively on the retail segment, Yes Bank aims to grow its retail loan book by 75 per cent to around Rs 56,000 crore in the next two years, a top company official said."For the last three to four years we have given our complete focus on the retail segment. We see a huge opportunity in retail. Currently our retail asset book size is close to around Rs 32,000 crore. We would be looking to grow it to anything between Rs 55,000-56,000 crore by 2019-20," Rajan Pental, Group President and Group Head- Branch and Retail Banking, Yes Bank, told PTI in an interview.Prior to turning the focus on the retail segment, Yes Bank built a strong customer franchise and when the equation was right, with a large retail customer base, the bank decided to offer retail services across products, Pental said."We entered this segment of business considering the fact that you need to have the entire range of products for all our valued customers," he said.Asked if the focus on retail base was driven by sluggish credit growth in the corporate loans segment, he said it is a "life-cycle development" for Yes Bank."Unlike other banks, it is more like life-cycle development for us. We are completing our customer franchise. In our life-cycle, our objective is to get aggressive on retail. It is not because we thought something else is not doing well so we should get into it," he said.He said the bank has taken a differentiated approach of segregating branches geography-wise and offering tailor-made products as per the needs of customers."We have different products for different markets. On a few products, there will be focus on rural only, like small lending, tractor financing or farmer loans, while the urban and semi-urban markets have the entire range of products."Our footprint of branches is across country and we have now created rural and urban branches segregation," he explained on being asked how it plans to reach a wider base.As of end-June 2018, the bank had 1,100 branches, of which 400 are in rural and semi-urban areas.Yes Bank has a good number of branches in the rural areas to cater to the specific financing needs of the customers residing in those areas, Rajan said.Besides, the auto loans is a new product line which seems to have good potential for the bank, he added. In residential loans, the bank is seeing good opportunity."In mortgages space we are an active player in affordable housing finance, besides our existing customers who need a luxury loan. We are seeing an upswing in affordable housing. We are seeing that the projects are delivered on time and the money rotation is good both for the builder as well as the financier," he said.Timely delivery of projects and government subsidy is also helping the affordable housing segment, which is boosting opportunities, he added. The bank is currently involved only in those affordable housing projects that are in the periphery of metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Pune, among others.Rajan also said there is good traction in the affordable housing segment from the unorganised sector but the bank will be exercise caution before reaching out to those customers.
  • NEW DELHI: The Indian insurance industry is expected to grow to USD 280 billion by 2019-20 aided by the government's flagship Ayushman Bharat and increasing awareness about need for protection, according to an Assocham-APAS study. Insurance penetration in the country reached 3.7 per cent in 2017 from 2.71 per cent in 2001. Gross premium increased from Rs 3.2 lakh crore (USD 49 billion) in 2011-12 to reach Rs 5 lakh crore (USD72 billion) in 2017-18, it said. "Push by the government and the regulator has helped increase the penetration of the insurance, as spread of schemes have also increased. Several factors such as growing middle class, young population and increasing awareness towards the need for protection and retirement planning would enable the growth further," the study said. It said, Ayushman Bharat, the ambitious scheme of the government, covering 100 million poor and vulnerable families with a cover of Rs 5 lakh per family of tertiary care and hospitalisation will be a game changer for the insurance industry, as it would have a great multiplier impact on a host of allied sectors and create lakhs of new jobs. "The Indian insurance industry is expected to grow to USD 280 billion by FY2020 with the government's flagship Ayushman Bharat and other growth drivers like rising disposable incomes, presence of global players and easing of the regulatory regime, helping penetration of the insurance culture in the country," the study noted. The private sector companies which presently hold close to 48 per cent market share in the general insurance and 29 per cent in the life insurance will see a big growth in the opportunities. The medium-term outlook for the life insurance industry remains robust, with solid premium growth forecast over the next five years to 2023, it said. "An effective implementation of the (Ayushman Bharat) scheme will help the entire healthcare and allied sectors like pharmaceutical, diagnostics, medical devices, data management, insurance hospitality TPAs, quality accreditation and human resource management with the help of information and communication technologies across the value chain," said the study conducted by industry chamber Assocham and research firm APAS. • Investors are more certain that oil prices will increase -- but the market isn’t playing along.Hedge fund bets on rising Brent oil prices jumped to the highest in two months earlier this week, according to data released Friday. The optimism proved mistimed, with crude tumbling the following days as fears of emerging-market crises and trade wars led to a widespread rout of currencies, equities, bonds and commodities. The disconnect was the latest muddled sign for the oil markets. While money managers concentrated on shrinking supplies from Iran, shaky developing economies and escalating U.S.-China trade tensions are clouding the outlook for global demand. A substantial increase in American fuel stockpiles didn’t help either, and more buildups could further stoke the bad mood, said Michael Lynch of Strategic Energy & Economic Research.“It’s really going to depend on the next couple of weeks of inventory reports,” Lynch said by telephone from his Winchester, Massachusetts, office. “If the U.S. were to keep putting up the kind of numbers we saw this week, people are going to start to get a little more nervous.”65740440
