  • MUMBAI: Only a third in India are regularly saving for their retirement while just 33 per cent of working-age respondents globally are putting anything aside for their later life, according to a report. The lack of saving is likely linked to low knowledge of how much money is needed in retirement, as well as many prioritising their immediate financial situation over planning for their older years, according to HSBC's the 'Future of Retirement: Bridging the Gap' report. "For many, retirement is thankfully no longer a short period tacked on to the end of our life. It can be a long and very fulfilling part of a person's life. But with that, our needs at 65 can be very different from our needs at 75 or 85, with very different financial implications," HSBC India head of retail banking and wealth management Ramakrishnan S said. The research for this report was carried out online by Ipsos on behalf of HSBC among 16,000 adults in 16 markets, including Australia, Argentina, Canada, China, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Turkey, UAE, UK and USA. It revealed that only 19 per cent of working age people are saving for future nursing or care home fees. This is despite half (51 per cent) respondents claiming to be concerned about affording residential care when in retirement, it added. Meanwhile, the report found that over half of working-age people (56 per cent) are living on a day-to-day basis financially, while a further 53 per cent only save for short-term goals. Almost half (45 per cent) also admit they prefer spending on enjoying today rather than saving for tomorrow, it added. The lack of saving may also be linked to many people not considering their older years as 'retirement' at all, with over two-thirds of working-age people (69 per cent) expecting to continue working to some extent and more than half (54 per cent) hoping to start a business or new venture, it said. When it comes to knowing the amount of money they will need in retirement, almost two-thirds (65 per cent) of working-age respondents said they were aware of the cost of typical residential home fees. • MUMBAI: India's new drone regulations are set to change the landscape of the real estate sector from December, as the 3-D mapping of properties will not just become powerful tool for marketing but will further boost transparency and accountability, industry experts say. The commercial use of drones under the recently announced DGCA norms has been made legal from December 1. But delivery of payload, including food items, would not be allowed as of now, according to the regulations for commercial use of drones (unmanned aircraft) unveiled by civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu late last month. According to a recent survey by PwC, the use of drones for the purpose of property mapping is becoming prominent, since it is easier to draw 3 dimensional map of buildings providing details such a built up area and number of floors. "The 3D mapping is helping to form a more realistic documentation of the properties in the cities, bringing in more accountability and transparency," it said. According to Spenta Corporation director Anaisha Cooper, usage of drones will pave way to creating a seamless communication in each level of construction. "Drones can provide a progress chart by gaining trust and assurance," Cooper told . Initially, drones will be permitted to operate only within sight and during the day, with a maximum altitude of 400 ft. Also, small drones, those in the nano category, weighing less than or equal to 250 gm and operating below 50 ft, as well as those in the micro category, weighing between 250 gm and 2 kg and operating below 200 ft, do not need registration. Echoing similar views, Radius Developers COO Ashish Shah said that permitting the use of nano drones will open different avenues that will extenuate the customers experience of purchasing a home. "Drone photography/video is an apt way for developers to showcase the horizon of a project and actual views from higher storeys. "The data collected using drones can also be used to compare original plans with the ongoing construction work to show customers how a site is progressing. Furthermore, this technology can help monitor different stages of an under- construction building to help manage resources," he added. As per the regulations, drones, however, won't be permitted in certain no-fly zones such as airports, state secretariat complexes and military installations. For developers, drone images and videos can be a very powerful tool for marketing. "Drone video footage can provide dramatic views of the entire property. In marketing real estate, you're trying to get people's attention and get them to spend more time looking at the property. "Real estate has always been a cut-throat competitive market, hence aerial photography and videography becomes a useful medium to represent a property effectively for providing a larger than life perspective," Ruparel Realty MD Amit Ruparel said. Property portals, which are currently playing a larger roles in marketing of properties on digital platform are also gearing themselves to incorporate this. "As a company, we keep upgrading ourselves. On the online platform, as customers rarely get a sense of what kind of view they will enjoy from their future homes, drone images become a very useful tool in completing the entire customer experience. "We will also be creating a link on which the customers can view the drone images or videos," said NoBroker co-founder and CEO Amit Kumar Agarwal.
  • NEW DELHI: Google has advocated free flow of cross border data as the country is mulling to bring about data localisation in its data protection framework."Free flow of data across borders -- with a focus on user privacy and security -- will encourage startups to innovate and expand globally and encourage global companies to contribute to India's digital economy," Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a letter to Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. In a letter thanking Prasad for his visit to the Google's Mountain View campus last month, the Indian-born chief of the Internet giant Pichai said the company shares the vision of creating a truly 'Digital India' and Google remains firmly committed to being part of the India growth story. "The Google team in India will be touch with your office to follow up on some of the specific topics we discussed during our meeting."The recent report and the draft Bill on data protection submitted by the Srikrishna committee last month suggested that every data fiduciary in India shall ensure the storage of at least one serving copy of personal data on a server or data centre located in India. It also stated that the government can notify some categories of personal data as critical personal data that have to be stored in a server or data centre located only in India.Prasad also said recently that he has conveyed to companies like Amazon to check unbridled cross-border migration of data without consent of users. This particular recommendation has met with criticism from various quarters especially American technology company groupings.Meanwhile, the government has extended till September 30 the deadline for public feedback on the draft personal data protection Bill. It had earlier set September 10 as the deadline for public comments. ET had reported earlier that the government plans to present the Bill in the Parliament by December this year.
  • The high-speed rail project executing authority has decided to construct a service road along the 508-km corridor, which could prove to be a lifeline for people in remote areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The four-metre service road will run throughout the alignment between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, excepting a few stretches with difficult terrain. The project is being executed at an approximate cost of Rs 1.08 lakh crore with active financial and technical support from Japan."The road would aid in supply of raw materials and provide logistical support to engineers and workers for construction of the corridor, the alignment of which passes through remote and inaccessible areas. Eventually, it will be transformed into an all-weather motorable road," said an official of National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).Once the project is over, the service road will not only be used by engineers to carry out periodic inspection of the alignment but could also be used by the general public, he said.Spokesperson of the corporation Dhananjay Kumar said the road could also act as a green corridor, transporting villagers in ambulances to big cities like Mumbai in no time, which was unthinkable till now.The corridor will have 12 stations, running 156 km in Maharashtra, 4.3 km in the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and 348 km in Gujarat. The Palghar district in Maharashtra, which has been witness to sporadic agitation over land acquisition, could stand to benefit majorly from the project as well as the service road. The authorities have identified 73 villages which would be affected by the project -- 109 km of the project runs through this district. But officials believe, it would prove a lifeline for them. The villages are tucked away in remote locales and getting access to basic amenities still remains a challenge for them. The alignment of the high speed corridor would run right through the villages and the service road could bring about a big difference to their lives, they said.In Vadodara, the corporation is also coming up with a satellite station on the city outskirts, an offshoot of the project. The station will come up as the corporation will dismantle platform seven of the main Vadodara station to enable construction of the high speed corridor. NHSRCL chief project manager (Vadodara) Pradeep Ahirkar said the new Chhayapuri station will handle those trains which use platform seven for reversal. Most of these trains originate from Ahmedabad and are bound for northern states including Delhi.
