- NEW DELHI: The pace of rupeeâs fall against the dollar has stunned both economists and analysts, who have been finding it difficult to gauge the real impact the ongoing currency mark turmoil on the stock market and the economy. On a seven-day losing streak, the local unit has plunged below the 72 mark against the greenback on Thursday, making financial markets nervous.WE TOLD YOU SO: As rupee stares at 72, D-Street counts costs to macros & marketFinance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday tried to assuage concerns, blaming global factors, and not domestic ones, for the rupeeâs fall and suggested that there was no need for panic or knee-jerk reaction. The FM said the Reserve Bank of India was doing whatever was necessary to deal with the situation. But financial markets were still very
- nervous on Thursday.âIn the offshore NDF markets, the rupee traded at 75 to the dollar. This financial year, the rupee has depreciated sharply; and on NDF implied yield on rupee has hardened sharply this month. The last 364-day T-bill cutoff was 7.32 per cent. Thus, the rupee will continue to face pressure in the foreseeable future,â SBI Economic Research said in a note.SBI Economic Research listed five macro parameters to show what price India may end up paying for a weak currency:Extra interest burden on India IncSBI noted that if half of the $217.60 billion short-term debt obligations that India had as of December 31, 2017 is either paid in H1 of 2018 or rolled over to 2019, the remaining repayment amount in rupee terms would be Rs 7.1 lakh crore at an average 2017 exchange rate of Rs 65.1 per US dollar.âFor H2 assuming that rupee depreciates to an average value of 71.4/ dollar, the debt repayment amount would be Rs 7.8 lakh, thereby implying an extra cost of Rs 67,000 crore,â it said.
- Foreign flowsSuppose, an FPI has invested Rs 60 in a domestic auto stock ABC, when one US dollar was worth Rs 60. Further suppose the auto stock has now appreciated 20 per cent (in rupee terms) to Rs 72. At this price, even if the FPI gained 20 per cent in rupee terms, it would end up getting nil return -- the same one dollar value for the ABC share -- if it were to book profit now. The current round of rupee depreciation has entered eighth month and outflows are all visible.
- Oil import billSBI pegged Indiaâs crude import bill to touch $57 billion in 2018, factoring in an average oil price of $74.24 a barrel for the remaining half of the calendar. Assuming an average of Rs 71.4/US dollar in second half of the year, it anticipates the import bill to top Rs 4,00,000 crore. That said, if crude oil prices were to average to $76 a barrel for the remaining half and average exchange rate at Rs 73 a dollar, the extra cost could cross Rs 45,000 crore, the brokerage said.
- Fiscal costThe rupeeâs fall and the fall in bond yields to 8 per cent level will increase fiscal costs for the government to the tune of at least Rs 6,000-7,000 crore, SBI said. The government generally frontloads the borrowing programme to the first half of the year. But that has declined to 39 per cent in the current fiscal from an average of 59 per cent in FY14-18. The state governmentsâ borrowing trend is similar this time.âThis was mainly to avoid the rising interest costs to the government. However, as a result, there will now be increased borrowing pressures on the government and hence yields will increase from current levels,â SBI said.
- Fall in consumptionThe continued rupee depreciation and given the significant costs of RBI intervention in forex market and, hence, RBI apathy to take that route could result in at least one more hike, possibly frontloaded, SBI said.
- India seeks US partnership to boost various sectors and grow the bilateral trade to USD 500-600 billion from USD 125 billion currently, with a good strategy under a stipulated time, commerce and industry minister Suresh Prabhu said in Mumbai on Thursday. "The US-India bilateral trade is declining for various reasons and we should not be happy with bilateral trade of USD 125 billion. We must set a clear cut target of USD 500-600 billion in a stipulated time period. We are willing to come out with complete strategy and am sure that the companies from both country's will benefit," Prabhu said Thursday. Speaking at a US-India Business Council event, Prabhu said that we can resolve some issues through talks. India offers lot of opportunities in sectors including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, start-ups and make "India-US partnership greater again" in line with President Trump's call of Let's make US great again. The geo-politics has changed so much in the last few months, geo-economics is also changing rapidly. "In this context, I see a clear defined role and responsibility for US-India to work together not just for our mutual benefit but also for the benefit of rest of the world," Prabhu said. India will become USD 5 trillion economy in the next 7-8 years and USD 10 trillion by 2035, he said. India becoming economically strong would only mean, US has a friend and partner, who is stronger than before and strong India will be in the long term interest of US, he reiterated. The country's aviation sector is expected to provide big investment opportunity as it is one of the fastest-growing in the world and has recorded 50 months of double-digit traffic growth. As many as 100 new airports would be built in the next 10 to 15 years for about USD 60 billion, Prabhu said, adding that the country's infrastructure sector also offers investment opportunity of USD 250 billion every year. India is looking setting up of special economic zones (SEZ) only for the US companies, he added. Prabhu also said US-India must have specific programme for sharing information of start-ups from both the countries. Further, he called US to join hands with India to explore export opportunities in 54 African nations, where both US and India can make joint pitch for exports of American and Indian products. Prabhu also urged the US to be partner with India to create new dynamic agenda for the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The minister said that the government will announce the new industrial policy soon. A key thrust in the proposed policy, which will replace the Industrial Policy of 1991, is to reduce regulatory hurdles and encourage adoption of technologies of the future such as robotics and artificial intelligence.

- Japanese auto major Nissan announced Thursday plans to hire 1,500 people in India to strengthen R&D and global digital hub while also stating that it would go for "voluntary separation" at its Chennai manufacturing unit. The company, which is seeking to revive its presence in India, said it would go for separate dealerships for Nissan and Datsun brands especially in smaller towns in the country. As part of a new strategy, the company is positioning the Nissan at the upper end building on the brand's global SUV heritage while the Datsun brand will address the mass market segment, Nissan Chairman for Africa, Middle East and India Peyman Kargar said. Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of annual convention of SIAM, he said Nissan will also bring new products to India starting with the Kicks SUV in 2019. The company already employs around 7,000 people at its R&D centre near Chennai doing development work for vehicles in India and handling engineering activities for its alliance with Renault. "We are going to invest in this area in India further. We will hire 1,000 for R&D this year and another 500 for the newly set up digital hub," Kargar said. In the coming years, in India, he said, "We will grow and our workforce will shift towards highly skilled jobs to lead the technological changes coming to the auto industry in India." On the other hand, he said the company will also reduce excess manpower starting with its manufacturing vertical. "We are also going to offer a voluntary departure for excess people in areas where we don't require," he said without disclosing exact number. "Our aim is to ensure our operations in India are best in class and that India becomes an even more significant global hub for Nissan and the alliance in manufacturing, engineering and R&D," he added. As part of the company's MOVE 2022 strategy, Nissan is looking to fix its business operation in India along with Saudi Arabia, where it has made significant investment but hasn't had much success. "Our strategy in India is to strengthen both the brands Nissan and Datsun for our customers across India," he said, adding the strategy was to use the alliance synergy differently as compared to the past. Through it new strategy, the company is looking at utilising the full capacity of the alliance plant in Chennai as compared to the current 40 per cent through the new measures, Kargar said. At present the plant has an annual production capacity of 4.8 lakh. Kargar said going forward, the company is looking at the plant serving the domestic requirement mainly although exports would continue. When asked about new product launches, he did not elaborate but said the company would continue to bring new models in the country. "We will reinforce Nissan as a premium brand building on its SUV heritage starting with the launch of Kicks in 2019," he said. He said Nissan would also harness opportunities in India from its global leadership in electrification and connected cars. The company has been testing its e-Power electric vehicle in India but Kargar said Nissan hasn't fixed a time line for launching the product in India. For Datsun, he said the focus would be on progressive mobility targeting mass market through reinforcement of new product line-up to address developing segments in India. When asked if sales network for Nissan and Datsun would be separated, Kargar said in Tier III and Tier IV areas, it would be to offer differentiation of the brands. "We are putting in place dedicated people for marketing and sales for the Datsun brand," he added. Admitting that the company has made the mistake of underestimating the need for sales network, Kargar said going forward Nissan is looking to double its sales and service touch points in the next three years from 270 at present.
