Emerging stocks slide into bear market amid contagion concern Experts see more pain if Donald Trump levies on $200 billion of additional Chinese imports. - While some traders may be staying on the sidelines ahead of the key U.S. jobs report Friday, others see more pain for developing nations, particularly if Donald Trumpâs administration follows through on a plan for levies on $200 billion of additional Chinese imports after a consultation period ends Thursday. China has threatened to retaliate.âThe very tough conditions for emerging markets are likely to continue for a while and economies with current-account deficits will probably remain a major target of selloffs,â said Takashi Kudo, the head of financial markets research at Fujitomi Co. in Tokyo. âEmerging currencies are seeing some stabilization in the very short term amid a series of supports from respective monetary authorities,â including intervention and rate increases, he said.U.S. companies hired fewer workers in August than economists estimated, a private report showed Thursday. The ADP figures, published before tomorrowâs official non-farm payrolls report, showed 163,000 new jobs compared with expectations for 200,000. If weaker U.S. employment gains cloud the outlook for Federal Reserve rate increases, demand for riskier assets such as emerging markets may rise.HIGHLIGHTS:EM stock gauge falls 0.2 percent. Its 12-month price-to-earnings ratio is at the lowest level since early 2016. MSCI Emerging Markets Currency Index little changed.Equity gains in Turkey, South Africa and Russia soothed shocks from Philippines, where a jump in inflation pushed Manila stocks to a two-week low. Indonesiaâs rupiah gains 0.3 percent on signs the central bank will raise rates further.Hereâs what some investors and analysts have to say about emerging markets:George Boubouras , a director at Salter Brothers Asset Management Ltd. in MelbourneContagion is a normal reaction. This is a dollar-strength issue that began at the beginning of the year or late last year and good emerging markets have been impacted because they are generally more liquidWhen the sentiment weighs so negatively and the contagion, which will get worse, continues, people then start going back and looking at the fundamentals across reasonable economies that have current-account imbalancesThe valuations are very compelling versus developed markets. Investors can start entering now, but itâs just not going to repair itself anytime soon. From Salterâs perspective itâs too early, but for a deep-value investor itâs compellingVishnu Varathan, head of economics and strategy at Mizuho Bank in SingaporeEconomies with twin deficits, low foreign-exchange reserves and high inflation are very vulnerableBut the silver lining is that so far the selloffs outside Turkey and Argentina are quite consistent with those during the global financial crisis and the taper tantrum, and not deeper like during the Asian financial crisisIn Asia, the twin deficit issue is acute for Indonesia and especially India amid persistently high oil prices. Indian policymakers arenât leaning against depreciation in the currency at this pointJameel Ahmad, global head of currency strategy and market research at FXTMInvestors are really attacking currencies from current-account deficit countriesâWhat Iâm looking for is a change in tone in the Federal Reserve as we end 2018. That potentially they will pause monetary policy normalization headed into next year. This will provide a significant opportunity for a rebound in FX in emerging marketsâ

- Airtel Payments Bank customers can now make card-less cash withdrawals at select ATMs across the country using instant money transfer technology, the company said Thursday. "IMT is the largest interoperable card-less cash ATM network in the world, built and run by Empays Payment Systems India Pvt Ltd. "The facility is currently available for Airtel Payments Bank account holders at over 20,000 IMT-enabled ATMs in India and will cover more than 100,000 ATMs by the end of this year," Airtel said in a statement. Airtel Payments Bank has tied up with Empays to enable its savings account holders to withdraw cash using just their mobile phone through the card-less cash technology of Empays, called IMT (Instant Money Transfer). "The technology can be used for self-withdrawal or for sending money to an intended recipient for ATM cash withdrawal," the statement said. Over 1 lakh ATMs belonging to some of the largest banks in the country such as State Bank of India, Axis Bank and Punjab National Bank are linked to the IMT system for card-less cash withdrawals. The network is licensed by the Reserve Bank of India as a payment system and is the only one of its kind in the country. As an introductory offer, Airtel Payments Bank has waived off Rs 25 transaction fee for the first two self-withdrawals, it added.
- Punjab National Bank (PNB) has asked its customers to get their non-CTS compliant cheques replaced as these instruments will not be accepted for clearance in the banking system from January. Non-CTS compliant cheques shall not be processed for clearing with effect from January 1, 2019, PNB said in a notification. "Get your non-CTS cheque book replaced immediately," it said. The Cheque Truncation System (CTS) is a process of stopping flow of physical cheque in which an electronic image of the instrument is presented when it comes for clearing. This eliminates the cost of movement of physical cheques and reduces the time for clearance for better delivery of services to customers. As per RBI, banks are advised to issue only CTS-2010 standard cheques to their customers.

- KOLKATA: Xiaomi is going to reduce the window between online launch of its smartphones in India with the launch in brick-and-mortar stores and ramp up supplies to these outlets as it aims to grow the contribution of offline stores to total sales, a senior company official said.Offline currently accounts for 30% of Xiaomi Indiaâs sales as compared to 5% around a year back when it intensified efforts to expand sales in brick-and-mortar cellphone stores. The brand is sold offline in over 40 cities and towns in India.Xiaomi India chief marketing officer Anuj Sharma said the company is ramping up local production to ensure there is no shortage of supplies in the brick-and-mortar cellphone stores. He said the company already manufactures smartphones in six plants in the country. As per Hong Kong based market tracker Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi recorded its highest ever shipments in India during the April-June quarter of this year with share in the offline channel increased as it pivots to a multi-channel strategy in India.âThe growth can be attributed to its strong product and supply chain strategy that has allowed it to launch products with a longer shelf-life than its competitors and that too in the important sub-Rs 10,000 segment,â the researcher said. While Counterpoint estimates Samsung regained market leadership in the Indian smartphone market followed by Xiaomi in the April-June quarter, US-based researcher IDC India said Xiaomi continues to be the leader followed by Samsung in the same period. As per Counterpoint, Xiaomi has three smartphone models amongst the top five sold in the country.Xiaomi has recently launched three new smartphone models â" Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi 6 Pro. While Sharma said these models are part of Xiaomiâs festive season line-up, he hinted that there could be more new model launches before Diwali. He, however, did not spell out the details.
