- âOf the 34 stressed thermal power assets identified by the ministry, 20 have PPAs (have been) signed for less than 50% of their capacity. A pilot scheme to secure 2.5 GW of PPA in 2018 for stressed assets received a tepid response (takers were for only 1.9GW) because of restrictive pricing clauses. At present, coal linkages are only allowed for long- and mediumterm PPAs. Thus, most of the power plants donât have adequate fuel supply arrangements, leaving them with no alternative than to go for costly e-auction,â Jefferies said.Demand revival in the steel sector has led to an improvement in recovery for companies from the sector. However, the long-standing issues in the power sector make the chances of recovery dim. Also, though banks have mostly recognised their losses on loans to this sector, the lack of any recovery in sight means credit costs will remain elevated, Jefferies said.
- FGE estimates Iranâs exports will slump to below 1 million barrels a day by mid-2019, while industry consultant Energy Aspects Ltd. expects a plunge of 1.5 to 1.7 million in daily shipments by the end of this year from current levels of about 2.5 million. With concerns growing that global spare capacity will be stretched if other producers such as Saudi Arabia pump more to make up for the loss, the oil market is revealing risks of a crunch.Near-term futures for Brent crude, the benchmark for more than half the worldâs oil, are trading higher than later contracts in a market structure known as backwardation that typically signals a supply squeeze. Front-month prices have soared almost 50 percent over the past year.âThereâs been a significant bump in the prompt oil contract thatâs contributed to the backwardation, and this bullishness is backed by factors such as U.S. sanctions on Iran,â said Stephen Innes, head of Asia Pacific trading at Oanda Corp. in Singapore. The market will look to other producers such as Russia to fill the void, even as Nigeriaâs oil minister remains confident of OPECâs ability to pump more, said the Singapore-based analyst.Apart from refiners, shipowners whose vessels help ferry the Middle East nationâs supply, insurers who cover those cargoes as well as banks that help process payments for the crude are at risk from the sanctions, further complicating any trade with Iran.Indian Oil Corp., the nationâs biggest refiner, doesnât have clarity on purchasing Iranian oil for October due to payment issues, and will wait for direction from the countryâs government, a company official said last month. Japanâs Fuji Oil Co. has effectively stopped buying crude from the Persian Gulf state because itâs becoming difficult to secure a ship to transport oil, according to a company spokesman.

- Mumbai: Banks may have to take a haircut of as much as 60% from the close to Rs 1.8 lakh crore of loans to the power sector after the Allahabad High Court denied power companies interim relief from Reserve Bank of Indiaâs tightened NPA regulations, further impacting banking profitability, US-based brokerage Jefferies has stated in a note.âThe extent of power sector stress at the systemic level is well known. But the concern lies in the dearth of possible solutions to resolve these stressed assets. This, coupled with the urgency of lenders to find bidders, will lead to low realisation value and high haircuts for banks,â it said. The brokerage classified 34 stressed thermal power plants identified by the ministry of power based on non-availability of fuel supply agreements, absence of long-term PPAs (power purchase agreements), cost overrun, contractual disputes and weak financial strength of distribution companies (DISCOMs).Of these 34 stressed plants, it estimates that around 10 (total loans of Rs 39,400 crore) have already been referred to NCLT, and another eight (loans of Rs 36,500 crore) are set to be taken to NCLT.There are some other power sector assets which are expected to be resolved outside the NCLT, totalling loans of Rs 67,000 crore while seven assets with total loans of Rs 33,500 crore.
- by Serene CheongThe worldâs top oil buyers are discovering that U.S. sanctions on Iran will squeeze their trade flows whether they agree with America or not.It was only about three months ago that Indiaâs foreign minister said that the country wonât adhere to unilateral restrictions and will continue buying Iranian crude. China also made similar comments and was said to have rejected an American request to cut imports. Japan and South Korea have held talks with the U.S. aimed at securing exemptions.Yet for all the pushback and negotiations, an emerging pattern shows U.S. sanctions are succeeding in throttling Iranâs sales to its customers even before the measures take effect in early November. While America initially wanted a complete halt in purchases, traders are now concerned that even a revised aim for only cuts would take out enough supply to create a market deficit -- which other producers may struggle to fill.âAll of Iranâs oil customers are affected by increasing U.S. pressure to halt purchases, even as they request for concessions to cope with the consequences,â said Den Syahril, a senior analyst at industry consultant FGE. âWe expect India and especially China to maintain some degree of imports, while buyers in Japan and Korea whoâve cut imports considerably will continue to aggressively seek waivers up till the last minute.â65665805
- Since the comments about opposing U.S. sanctions, Indiaâs imports from Iran have tumbled and itâs said to be mulling a 50 percent cut in purchases. Latest data show flows to China, the top crude buyer, have also shrunk and the Asian countryâs own tankers have stopped hauling supply from the Islamic Republic. Cargoes to South Korea plunged over 40 percent in July, while Japanese firms have said September-loading shipments may be their last. After continuing imports, albeit at reduced levels, the buyers must now contend with the ever-closer Nov. 4 deadline, when the U.S. will reimpose sanctions targeting Iranâs crude industry. Countries that deal with the Middle East producer after that will risk being cut off from the American financial system, unless they receive a waiver. While a cargo would need to load only in mid-October to arrive in North Asia the following month, its purchase will have to be decided in September. With the U.S. not yet saying whether itâs granting any nation an exemption, all shipments from Iran to its leading customers may be in peril starting this month. Even if the waivers are provided, they will be based on the promise of keeping flows limited.65665838

I will start with easier ones first. As far as Piramal Enterprises is concerned, last week the analysts were largely focused on their financial services business and there is a clear roadmap laid out. They have found new segments within the crowded financial services space in terms of having built domain knowledge over the last couple of years in real estate lending, mezzanine debt and quasi equity. So more into partnership deals and not just pure lender borrower relationship. Most important, in terms of underwriting skills or risk assessment, they claim to be better and so far, their track record speaks for it. I am absolutely sure that over the next few years, from housing finance, they will probably get into every segment within the corporate and individual lending spaces. But over a period of time, they need to improve their return on equity as far as financial services business is concerned. The market is not in a hurry because they are in an investment phase as they are building business but over a period of time, that will play out. The big trigger which everybody was waiting to hear and which the management committed to without stating the time horizon is demerger and listing the financial services and the pharma business separately. This will help do away with the holding company discount, that currently or even in future, Piramal will have.Near term, probably the stock has had a run and maybe we should see some sort of cool off and even a correction. Longer term, you cannot really lose money on Piramal. Whether the demerger happens in the next two years, three years or five years, the sustainable growth itself will ensure that there are adequate returns for investors. I would suggest buying on declines as far as Piramal is concerned.Give me your best idea for the day. Last time you suggested HUL and TCS. Not necessarily for today, but over the next few weeks or months, I would look at Reliance Capital. I am seeing some deep value there. The stock has seen negative sentiment for the last couple of years thanks to what has been happening in the other group companies regarding debt and defaults and financial strain. Each of the five business lines of Reliance Capital has been growing in double digits. The five businesses are -- core NBFC business, life insurance, general insurance, brokerage and wealth management and housing finance. NBFC has both personal loans as well as corporate loan book, all of them growing in double digits. All the five businesses are generating return on equity in the vicinity of 12% to 15% and are likely to continue to grow. This $75 billion number which was floating like hot air in the market yesterday, what can be its origin?Well, whether it is 75, less or more is anybodyâs guess. I believe there is a window of another four months for FPIs to comply and importantly if India remains an attractive investment destination for foreign investment flows, I am sure the foreign investors will figure out other ways and means in terms of additional layering or in terms of complying with it because every country has a regulatory mechanism and globally funds do move across geographies. Regulation is never a hurdle for investment flows. I mean historically it has never been nor will it be in the future, number one. Number two, I am sure Sebi is also pragmatic and more importantly FPIs are running a business, investors are bringing the money in because they do see some merit of investing in India. So, this probably is a short-term knee-jerk reaction but I do not see a long-term implication of serious foreign outflows happening in the next few days or few weeks. I really would not believe that story.
