- On US concerns over the trade deficit with India, New Delhi plans to highlight the steps taken to increase imports from the country, which helped narrow the gap by over $1 billion last year. âWe will be importing oil worth $2.5 billion from the US this year. Washington has to appreciate these efforts being made by India,â the official said. Some of the US sanctions on Iran took effect early August, while others, mainly related to the petroleum sector, will kick off after November 4. The US is willing to offer a waiver to countries that make a âsignificantâ reduction in imports. Without this exemption, countries dealing with Iran after the deadline will risk getting cut off from the US financial system. India has been seeking a waiver from the US, although it is unwilling to reduce imports anytime soon.âIndia will not cut import of Iranian oil. If there is some import reduction after November 4, that would be purely due to logistics or operation hurdles such as lack of tankers or insurance or reinsurance,â one person said.If India continues to import oil from Iran, it will have to find a way to pay for the supplies because the State Bank of India has already told refiners it canât support Iranian purchases during sanctions. The government is yet to identify a bank that can be used to channel Iranian oil payments.India imports a tenth of its crude oil from Iran and is the biggest buyer of crude from the Islamic Republic after China. There is also the problem of making technical adjustments to refineries if a new form of crude oil is imported as it would require time, effort and resources.
- Founder & Chairman, Bharti Enterprises, in an exclusive interview with Ajaya Sharma of ET Now.Edited excerpts: What do you think is the contribution of telecom sector to the economy?Telecom is the backbone of the digital society and now we have three players in the marketplace other than BSNL. The future of nations like India, which are fast emerging on the world stage, is going to be built on the back of digital. And in that, telecom is going to play a greater and a bigger role in times to come.Financialization is increasing in our country, digital transactions are growing. Do you think that the role of the telecom sector and the profitability profile in the next four to five years will be more volume based rather than value?Volumes have already been established. India was always a volume market. Indian prices and tariffs have historically been world beaters in terms of how low they are. That has been on the back of the scale that we have. We are a very large nation with lots of people using mobile phones. Affordability has become the norm and now that has gone up by 10x on data, 1.5-2 times on voice traffic as well. So, the volume is there and thankfully given the volume, you just need some small marginal tweaks in the tariff which to bring back the profitability or sustainability that is required for a capital intensive industry like telecom. In the cycle of evolution of the sector, where is telecom right now?It is right in the middle of the sweet spot because almost everything that is moving around us has to be necessarily taken from the telecom ecosystem. With more and more people using smart phones, more and more people consuming entertainment, banking services, payouts and payments, all walks of life are sort of transforming themselves into a digital mode and telecom plays a very formidable role there. You just said that minor tweaks in tariffs and things will start looking upwards once again, are you indicating that we are somewhere around the bottom in terms of tariff structure?Well who knows? You can never say never, we could have never thought we will be at the levels that we are today but I would say more and more consumption of data clearly suggests that there is a set pattern emerging in the marketplace of consumption. The industry yearns for two things to get the right margins -- volume growth and pricing increase. One equation that has been very well set now is the volume growth. The volume has grown tremendously and that is why I am saying it is good news that the tweaks required on the pricing side is very small.Do you see that happen in the medium term? You can never predict. It will really depend on the market. You have to compete in the marketplace and right now for the last two years, the pricing part of the equation has been brutal. We are also having this chat at a time when the challenger of the industry is completing two years in business. How have been these two years fighting the competition in the market on varied dynamics?Well, every time a stronger competitor comes in the marketplace, you try to get better. You sharpen your skills, you take out waste, you get more customer focussed, you get more out into the market and that is what all good companies do. These last two years have reshaped the landscape of the industry. You know seven or eight companies have completely vanished by way of either closures or mergers or bankruptcies. So, you have seen a complete rewriting of the order of the market and in that companies like Airtel have shaped themselves as a much more leaner and a fighting fit machine than ever before. The optimists who look at the sector say now that only three players remain in a market which is exploding in volumes terms, once the cycle of tariffs start moving upwards, the delta of profitability could be very high. Looking out two, three, four years from now, is this a fair hypothesis?Yes, look 1.3 billion people to be served by three operators has to be seen as a dream run and when the correction happens which eventually inevitably it has, at some point in time the industry health must return. And let me tell you, this industryâs health is very important for the national digital mission. Very large investments are required as this is a capital-intensive industry. 5G is knocking on the doors of this industry, it is not going to be too long from now when the 5G spectrum investments, network investments will start coming through. It is in the interest of the nation that we have three healthy sustainable telecom players. How prepared are you for that for 5G?Well, we watch technology. I mean I chair the global GSMA I sit will all my peers globally. We are watching the trends of 5G, China, US, some Nordic countries are taking the lead there. We are closely tracking all the developments.

- India will likely tell the US that it wonât be able to cut oil imports from Iran after sanctions take effect early November and hopes to âsensitiseââ Washington to the issues faced by the country in this regard, while making it clear that no nation can dictate how its external policy can be run.The foreign and defence ministers of India and the US are meeting in New Delhi on Thursday under the 2 + 2 dialogue to discuss a range of bilateral, regional and global issues.Indiaâs refineries are heavily dependent on supplies from overseas, including Iran, and giving up this cheaper option will be tough when retail prices of fuels are at an all-time high in the country, according to people familiar with the plan. âWe want to make the point that India is heavily reliant on oil imports for its consumption needs and 83% of its oil comes from external sources,â an official noted.India will also want to discuss alternative sources of oil with a focus on prices. âPricing of oil imports is very important for India as a number of factors such as economic growth and inflationary trends are tied to it,â the official said.
- BENGALURU: The threat of personal liability in the event of social media platforms being misused appears to be deterring senior executives from taking up the traditionally coveted job of heading Facebook and WhatsApp in India.Facebookâs last India MD Umang Bedi quit in October last year. It has been almost a year since, but the position remains unfilled. Facebook had at the time announced that Sandeep Bhushan, head of global marketing solutions in India, would be interim MD.For any candidate, the prospects can be worrying. TOI reported last week that an interministerial committee, headed by home secretary Rajiv Gauba, had submitted a report recommending that India heads of global internet and social media giants should face criminal proceedings in case their platforms are used to spread fake news and other sinister campaigns that lead to lynching and riots.Brian Wieser, senior analyst, advertising/media/internet at US-based equity research company Pivotal Research Group, told TOI that the threat of personal liability would deter managerial talent from considering a job, âespecially if those individuals have other options, and especially with companies, which are in any way dependent on data covered by the law.âFacebookâs vice-president for global marketing solutions David Fischer has made trips to India to interview candidates. TOI had reported in May that the candidates included Star India MD Sanjay Gupta, Tata Sky MD Harit Nagpal and Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan. Four months since, Facebook has been unable to close the position. An email sent to Facebook on the matter did not elicit a response.SENIOR ROLESFB has half a dozen open positions in IndiaKavil Ramachandran, professor & executive director in Thomas Schmidheiny Centre for Family Enterprise, Indian School of Business (ISB) said, âThe way Facebook has compromised data privacy expectations of users with the approval of its founder, Mark Zuckerberg has created panic among all at the senior levels, particularly in countries like India where the Facebook group is very vibrant but with very limited powers to influence the global policies of the company. This means that, if something goes wrong due to any action of the headquarters, country executives will be held responsible.âFacebook has half a dozen open positions in India at senior roles, including the director of global sales organisation, director and head of partnerships, and vertical heads of ecommerce. The managing director position will be at the vice-president level. The latter is a first for India operations, signalling its growing importance. The two previous MDs for India and South Asia â" Bedi and Kirthiga Reddy â" were not accorded the VP title. The annual compensation, at $2 million (Rs 14 crore) and stock options, is also significantly higher than what was offered previously.Earlier, the government sent notices to Facebook-owned WhatsApp, warning the company that it will be seen as an abettor in crimes such as mob lynching if it fails to control the spread of fake news.IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has warned internet companies that they cannot evade responsibility and accountability to ensure their platforms are not misused on a large-scale to spread incorrect facts projected as news and designed to instigate people to commit crime.
- Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has grounded two Jet Airways pilots for reportedly beginning takeoff roll at IGIâs main runway without air traffic control clearance. The incident happened on August 25 when Jetâs Boeing 777 headed to London was assigned the main runway (28) for takeoff. However, instead of waiting at line-up for the ATC clearance, the pilots of 9W 122 inadvertently entered the runway and began takeoff roll without clearance. Luckily, there was no conflicting traffic at that time.Realising the mistake, the pilots rejected the take-off and exited the runway to return to the parking bay.DGCA chief B S Bhullar said, âThe cockpit crew (pilots) is off rostered and investigation is on.ââFollowing an aborted take-off on a Delhi-London Heathrow flight last week, Jet Airways has taken its flight crew off flying duty for the purposes of investigation. As per standard procedure, the airline has reported the matter to the regulator and is fully cooperating with the ongoing process,â a Jet spokesman said A senior official of Airports Authority of India sought the report from Delhi operation control on the incident. According to the report, the aircraft (VT-JEM) with 337 passengers was given line up instruction for runway 28 via taxiway W at 1.24pm on August 25.âPilots missed taxiway W and were again asked to line up on runway 28 via intersection P1. After lining up , the aircraft started rolling without take-off clearance. ATC was warning them by now, when they rejected the takeoff, exited the runway and went back to their bay. The transcript of ATC-pilots conversation has been given to agencies probing the incident,â the report said.On August 3, a Jet Boeing 737 at Riyadh airport tried to take-off using full power from a taxiway parallel to the runway from where it was supposed to get airborne for Mumbai. The aircraft went off paved area of Riyadh Airport.
- Bank of Baroda told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that Amrapali Infrastructure Private Limited was involved in dubious transactions and diverted Rs 2,156 crore with some of the amount transferred to companies managed by family members of the group chairman. The report was prepared under proceedings of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code initiated against the company by the creditor bank after the company failed to pay it back. Appearing before a bench of Justices Arun Mishra and U U Lalit, additional solicitor general Maninder Singh placed findings of the report on behalf of the bank and pleaded the bench to direct independent audit of all companies of the group.âIt is evident from a perusal of the forensic audit report that certain linkages can be established between AIPL and other related parties used for routing of funds amounting to Rs 2,156cr. All these transactions appear dubious and merit further investigation by an independent auditor,â the bank said in its affidavit. It said the transaction review report identified certain transactions which would require further investigation and examination of further documents which had not been made available to RP (resolution professional) despite repeated requests. âThis proves the mala fides of the promoters and substantiates the fact that fraudulent transactions had taken place which had not been highlighted by statutory auditors of the company,â it said. The ASG also contended that the statutory auditors of the companies were also aware about the transactions and asked the bench not to rely on the report prepared by them as they were âhand in glove with the real estate companyâ.The report also pointed out that funds were transferred to shell companies. It said AIPL had given unsecured loan of Rs 288 crore in 2016 to one Jhamp Finance and Leasing Pvt Company, which, it says, âseems to be under indirect control to the AIPLâ as its registered address is the same where other companies managed by the chairmanâs wife and daughter operate. The report also gives details of transaction of Rs 101 crore as loan with Jotindra Steel and Tubes Ltd in 2015-16, which turned out to be NPA . It said this is also under indirect control of Amrapali as both companies have common directors. The court is also examining the diversion of Rs 2,765 crore of homebuyersâ money for other purposes and termed it âcriminal misappropriationâ. As the forensic report of one of the 40 companies of Amrapali revealed diversion of over Rs 2,100 crore, the total amount diverted by all its companies could be very substantial which could be tracked through forensic auditing. The court agreed with the proposal for an independent audit and posted the case for passing order on September 6.The court also asked the company to furnish all the account details and warned it that its office would be sealed if it is not done.
