- In 2008, the Mukesh Ambani-led company was excited about the discovery of natural gas in KG basin, and its first success at crude oil exploration in the same D6 block. But within a decade, RILâs focus has moved to telecom, content and retail, where it has shaken up the market. RIL and TCS are ideal candidates for #10YearChallenge trending on social media. As part of the bet, people are asked to juxtapose their latest photos with how they used to look 10 years ago. Like any challenge, this one too is not without criticism. Many have complained about the trauma of comparing photos, or whether itâs a ploy to collect facial recognition data. And just like people, not all companies would like to look at 10-year-old numbers and compare them to todayâs. Just over ten years ago, Jet Airways acquired Sahara Airlines and Kingfisher Airlines acquired Air Deccan. Today, Kingfisher has gone defunct and Jet is struggling. MMTC that once soared during the minerals boom too has lost a lot of value, like many power and steel companies. But some have stayed steady, like ONGC and Indian Oil Corp. Then there are upstarts like Bajaj Finance that has moved up to the big league. This study, done by Economic Times Intelligence Group (ETIG), identifies listed Indian companies that have gone through biggest change in fortunes since 2008 in terms of growth and de-growth. We took top 100 companies by market cap as on December 31, 2018, and top 100 companies by market cap as on December 31, 2008. Of the 100 top companies from 10 years ago, 56 are still on the list while 44 new ones have joined the league. So we had a universe of 144 companies that have been ranked on the basis of real market cap growth and also on CAGR. We have further ranked these companies on revenue growth and income (profit after tax) growth. We have also gone through a list of 3,500 listed companies to make sure we are not missing out on any surprise stories of the last 10 years.
- In the late 2000s, hydroelectric power was billed as a sustainable, renewable alternative to coal- and gasbased electricity for India. The government drew up ambitious plans for setting up hydel plants and the private sector was keen to get in on the action. In 2008, growth in Indiaâs installed hydel capacity outpaced the rise in Indiaâs total power capacity. But it has been a different story since.Hydropower has slowly faded from the discourse on the future of Indiaâs energy security, as solar and wind projects garner much of the attention.Indiaâs installed hydro capacity at the end of 2018 was around 45,400 MW, an annual growth of just 1%, the lowest since 2009. Whatâs more, between 2008 and 2018, hydel powerâs share of Indiaâs total installed electricity capacity has halved from 25% to 13%. (In the same period, thermal powerâs contribution has remained the same, at two-thirds, and that of renewables has more than doubled to a fifth.)Beset by land acquisition troubles, uncertainty over final costs as well as estimated time for completion, and low tariffs, the hydel sector is unlikely to have a turnaround in the near future. While hydropower is renewable, its social and environmental impact â" from displacement of thousands of people and adverse effects on biodiversity as a result of dams, to methane emissions from the rotting vegetation in their reservoirs â" means that big hydel projects are no longer hyphenated with solar, wind and biomass energy. In 2015, the Indian government stopped categorising hydel projects larger than 25 MW as renewable.India has 4,500 MW of hydel projects with a capacity of less than 25 MW each. The govt has estimated the countryâs hydropower potential (more than 25 MW) at over 1,45,000 MW.
