- HDFC, tells Supriya Shrinate of ET Now in an exclusive interview. Mistry also says there was a knee-jerk reaction in the market.Edited excerpts: It is not just the triggers on Friday but the kind of market movements that we have seen in the last one week, shows fear is gripping Dalal Street. What is the basis of that fear? There was a big crash, followed by a revival towards the end but what is spooking the market? My sense is the nervousness that the market has been facing for the last few days, apart from the currency and everything else, revolves around the lack of liquidity in the system. Liquidity has been low for a while. One of the papers of one of the companies was sold today in the market at a much higher yield than the market expected. That caused panic and people over-reacted to the panic. That over reaction is what we saw reflected in market performances today with stocks going all over the place. The fundamentals have not changed. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the economy. There is no imminent risk of any major default happening other than whatever one has heard about IL&FS. There is no risk of any paper getting significantly downgraded or anything of that sort. I think it is a knee-jerk reaction of the market, based on the fact that one of the companyâs paper was traded at a much higher yield than what the market was expecting. But DSP Mutual Fund was selling DHFL paper at 11% in the bond market. Is our market so fragile that the intraday swing is about 1,500 points? The markets at one point crashed 1,000 points. How do you explain that knee-jerk reaction unless they are worried about more defaults or worsening macros? Absolutely. So the market was worried at that time. It is the knee-jerk reaction of the market based on the belief or based on the fear that a lot of the mutual funds had lent short-term money to a number of NBFCs and when this short-term money came up for maturity, the paper would not be renewed and if the paper was renewed, then it could theoretically result in a further liquidity crunch in the system as the concerned company would not be able to pay the mutual fund, leading to defaults. This is all market conjecture. I am sure some of these non-banking finance companies have a lot of short-term papers but they also have to look at each company and see what kind of assets-liabilities they have. I am sure there also have assets to be able to support liquidity requirement. You mentioned the liquidity situation tightening for a section of the market and my concern really is how wary are you of that happening in the bond market and what is that going to do to short term paper? Is that going to get costlier? What about the margins of housing finance companies because that is the section that really did tank in trade and those were the big fault lines of concern? Well if interest rates tighten a little bit, lending rates will also tighten. I do not think margins are going to get impacted because at the end, most people take a balanced balance sheet in the sense that they have asset-liability management systems which ensure that when they also have floating rates liabilities and floating rate assets. In that sense I do not think the balance sheets or the profitability or the margins of the housing finance companies per se would be affected. But some of the smaller housing finance companies who have borrowed a lot of money through the CP market are the ones that need to be watched. IL&FS has defaulted multiple times in the last two weeks. You believe there is some amount of concern. A lot of people in the market believe this is some sort of a ticking bomb that we are sitting on and a lot of people believe dithering decision on that issue is causing more concern than the defaults. IL&FS has some of the largest government investors like LIC and SBI. NHAI apparently in arbitration owes it about Rs 16,000 crore. What do you make of the IL&FS situation there? Well I am not conversant to a specific reference to any company whether it is IL&FS or anyone else. So, I would not be able to comment on the balance sheet but I am sure IL&FS has got assets. The problem is that the liabilities may be maturing at a faster pace. The assets may be less liquid and therefore it is a little more difficult for them to dispose of the assets. If they were to able to find a way of getting over the short-term problems and if they manage to roll over some of the liabilities, then some of these problems will get mitigated. But currently, there will be an issue because their assets are long-term and so it is obviously not easy to sell off a road asset or one of these infrastructure assets. It takes a while to do it. When they mature, they have to be paid back on that day. If they can find a way of rolling over those liabilities, then they could still save the day. There is a speculation in the market that RBI has asked banks to go slow on lending to NBFCs and HFCs. Have you heard anything on that front and how damning will it be if this were to be true? No, we have not heard anything of that sort and I do not think this would be correct also. There are exposure limits. There are risk mitigation measures which are put in place by all the banks. There is a limit to how much banks can lend to the NBFC sector. I am sure all the banks are well within that limit. A lot of people believe the markets are perhaps a little more cognisant of fact that macros do not seem to be in such pink of health. Whether it is the worsening rupee, the widening CAD or fresh fiscal concerns over Saudi Arabia wanting to see oil at about $80 per barrel mark, coupled with election jitters as the invincibility quotient of this government looks a little less than what it did six months back, are these fresh concerns plaguing our markets? Is that also at play whether it is the emerging market contagion or the kind of knee-jerk reaction that we saw? There is a combination of many things. Markets do not become weak in one or two days, it is a combination of the fact that oil prices have gone higher and fear that could go even higher. The US economy is doing well and a lot of money is flowing back from emerging markets into developed markets, particularly into the US making the dollar stronger. A stronger dollar is never good news for a country like India. Also, higher oil prices is not good news for India which in turn puts the results under pressure and leads to rise in current account deficit. But what we must recognise is with the rupee at 72-73 level today, that supports the exporters much more than whatever support they were getting from the currency say six months ago when the rupee was Rs 65 per dollar. So, exports would increase. If the exports increase, then naturally the trade balance will improve. If the trade balance improves, then automatically the current account deficit will also come down and if the current account deficit comes down, then that will be good for the rupee. What is it that the retail investor should be wary of? They have made a comeback to the markets and here you see stocks losing half their market value in a single trading session. How worried should retail investors be at this point in time? I can speak from personal experience only. I am not a market participant in that sense. But my personal experience shows that whenever markets are weak, that is not a time to panic, that is a time to hold on to your investments because whatever goes down, in the long term comes back, unless you have invested in companies which are fundamentally not strong. In that case, it is a different issue altogether. But if you have invested in fundamentally strong companies, then wait out this period, maybe you could even use this as an opportunity to add a little bit to your investment because when markets are down, this is the best time to invest with a long-term view. There is always reluctance to buy when markets are low. There is a huge appetite for people to buy when markets are high but that is in reality a wrong strategy. You should buy when markets are low and sell when markets are high.
