  440. <p>The FalconEye head-up display (HUD) combines live enhanced vision system (EVS) imagery with database-drive synthetic vision system (SVS) imagery. Dassault engineers have been working on FalconEye since 2011, and it was certified in 2016 in the Falcon 2000 and 900 then in the 8X in early 2017. By the end of 2018, Dassault expects to receive certification for “EFVS to 100 feet” operations in the 8X, then in the 2000/LXS and 900LX in the first half of 2019.</p><p>Enhanced flight vision system (EFVS) to 100 feet is the capability under current regulations allowing pilots to fly HUD-equipped airplanes to 100 feet before switching to natural vision to complete the landing. Eventually, Dassault plans to certify FalconEye-equipped jets for “EFVS to land” operations, which means pilots could fly an approach and land without using natural vision to see the runway, although there will be minimum visibility requirements.</p><p>Essentially, Dassault is aiming to create a new HUD-enabled capability, which it calls “equivalent visual operation,” or EVO, allowing pilots to land safely at all types of airports in all kinds of weather and without the need for expensive added equipment, time-consuming training, and operational limitations that come with Cat II and III approaches.</p><p>Although FalconEye is an option on new Falcons, most buyers, especially those opting for the 8X, are choosing the new HUD. On the new 6X, FalconEye will be standard equipment. Dual HUD installations will also be available for the 8X and 6X.</p>"

  • Your imported air conditioners, refrigerator and washing machine is set to get dearer as the government has hiked customs duty on these items to 20 per cent from the existing 10 per cent. Following up on its announcement to impose curb on imports, the government will hike basic customs duty on 19 items to curb ballooning current account deficit."The central government has taken tariff measures, by way of increase in the basic customs duty, to curb import of certain imported items. These changes aim at narrowing the current account deficit (CAD) ... In all the customs duty has been increased on 19 items,” the ministry said.According to the finance ministry, changes in rates will be effective from September 27 (midnight of September 26). The total value of imports of these items was Rs 86,000 crores, the ministry added. Besides white goods, the government has also increased import duty on aviation turbine fuel by 5 per cent, which is likely to send the air fares soaring. The announcement follows a decision taken by the government on September 14 that the Centre would impose curbs on import of non-essential items to contain the widening CAD and check the rupee fall. The CAD widened to 2.4 per cent of the GDP in the first quarter of 2018-19.Large trade deficit and rupee decline against the US dollar are putting pressure on the CAD, and these steps are likely to have a positive impact on the external sector. The rupee touched an all-time closing low of 72.91 against the dollar on September 12. Today it closed at 72.6 against the US dollar.Meanwhile, Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (ECEAMA) said the hike would come as a "set back" and may have an impact on the coming festive season sales. Here is the revised rate for the following items : ItemCurrentRevisedAir Conditioner1020Refrigerators10 20Washing Machines ( Less than 10 kg)1020Compressor for Refrigerators & ACs7.510Speakers1015Footwears 2025Radial car tyres10 15Non-industrial diamonds57.5Diamonds ( semi-processed) 57.5Lab grown diamonds5 7.5Cut & polished coloured gems stones57.5Articles of jewellery and parts thereof, of precious metal or of metal clad with precious metal1520Articles of Goldsmith or silversmith wares and parts thereof of precious metal or of metal clad with precious metal1520Bath, shower bath, sink, wash basin, etc. of plastics10 15 Articles of plastics for conveyance and packing such as boxes, case, containers, bottles, insulated ware etc.1015Tableware, kitchenware and other household items of plastics1015Miscellaneous items of plastics such as office stationery, fitting for furniture’s, decorative sheets, statuettes, beads, bangles etc.10 15Trunks, Suitcase, Executive cases, Brief Cases, travel bags and other bags etc.1015Aviation turbine fuel05(With inputs from PTI)
  • By Christopher Condon and Rich MillerFederal Reserve officials raised interest rates for a third time this year and reaffirmed their outlook for further gradual hikes well into 2019, risking fresh criticism from President Donald Trump. The quarter-point increase boosted the benchmark federal funds rate to a target range of 2 per cent to 2.25 per cent. The move reflected an upbeat assessment of the economy that was identical to the central bank’s last policy statement eight weeks ago, despite concerns over Trump’s escalating trade war.Growth and job gains have been “strong” and inflation remains near the central bank’s 2 per cent target, the Federal Open Market Committee said in its statement Wednesday following a two-day meeting in Washington.Barring a negative surprise in the economy, updated “ dot plot” forecasts made a December rate hike almost certain, as the number of FOMC officials expecting another increase by year-end grew to a bigger majority of 12, from eight in the previous round of projections in June.In the statement’s only change from the previous one issued Aug. 1, the committee dropped its long-standing description of monetary policy as “accommodative.” That’s an acknowledgment rates have moved closer to the neutral level which neither boosts nor restrains the economy.Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and his colleagues are trying to pull off a feat the central bank has accomplished only once in its 104-year history: Engineer a soft landing of the economy by raising rates just enough to prevent overheating, but not so much that they trigger a recession.Eighth HikeAfter eight hikes since late 2015, the fed funds rate is now at the highest level since October 2008, just after the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.Voters on the committee backed the decision 9-0. Powell is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m.Trump isn’t making the Fed’s tricky task any easier. Aside from criticizing recent Fed rate hikes, he’s launched a trade war with China that threatens both to slow growth and boost inflation. Tariffs on an additional $200 billion of imported goods from China took effect Monday, along with retaliatory levies from Beijing.Fed officials remained skeptical that Trump’s tax cuts will result in a persistent boost to economic growth. While they raised projections for expansion this year and next, they predicted that growth would slow to 1.8 per cent by 2021. That’s in line with their estimate for the economy’s long-run potential and contrasts with the Trump administration’s goal of sustained 3 per cent growth. In their post-meeting statement and updated economic projections, Fed policy makers made no mention of trade worries and showed no sign they would soon halt the upward march of rates.“The committee expects that further gradual increases in the target range for the federal funds rate will be consistent with sustained expansion of economic activity, strong labor market conditions and inflation near the committee’s symmetric 2 per cent objective,” the statement said, repeating previous language.Year AheadThe committee, enlarged to 16 by the recent addition of new Fed Vice Chairman Richard Clarida, continued to anticipate three hikes in 2019, according to the median estimate.Investors have questioned whether the Fed will ultimately prove so aggressive, preferring to price in two increases next year. If the central bank’s outlook prevails, traders will eventually be forced to adjust their rate-hike expectations and lift long- term rates. It was the first time since this round of rate increases began in late 2015 that the Fed hasn’t described policy as “accommodative.” Any signal in that change, however, is unclear. The location of a neutral rate for policy is the subject of heated debate, with estimates within the committee ranging from 2.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Powell has repeatedly played down the importance of neutral given economists’ inability to know precisely where it lies. Moreover, policy makers haven’t agreed on what they should do when rates reach neutral. Some favor a pause while others argue they should push rates above neutral before stopping.Balanced RisksFed officials, in the statement, repeated their assessment that “risks to the economic outlook appear roughly balanced.”The median forecast in the most recent set of projections continued to show officials expect borrowing costs to move above their estimate for the long-run neutral rate, reaching 3.4 per cent in 2020, the same as in the June forecasts. The new projections also included the first numbers for 2021, when officials see rates remaining steady at 3.4 per cent. The median long-run neutral estimate moved up slightly to 3 per cent from 2.9 per cent. The Fed’s hike widens a gap with its peers elsewhere. The European Central Bank said it will maintain its policy rate of minus 0.4 per cent at least through next summer, while the Bank of Japan is set to stick with its current settings until 2020.Higher US rates, though, may force more emerging markets to tighten monetary policy to defend their currencies at a time when investors are punishing those with fault lines such as large current-account deficits.Forecast DetailsMedian GDP growth estimate for 2018 rose to 3.1 per cent from 2.8 per cent; 2019 up to 2.5 per cent from 2.4 per cent, 2020 unchanged at 2 per cent, new 2021 projection at 1.8 per cent; longer-run figure unchanged at 1.8 per centMedian unemployment-rate estimate for fourth-quarter 2018 rose to 3.7 per cent from 3.6 per cent; 2019 and 2020 forecasts unchanged at 3.5 per cent, 2021 at 3.7 per cent; longer-run figure unchanged at 4.5 per centMedian estimates of PCE, core PCE inflation unchanged except for 2019 PCE projection, which moved to 2 per cent from 2.1 per cent
  • Hike in custom duty to 10 per cent on compressors, used for air conditioners and refrigerators, can be a "set back" and may have an impact on the coming festive season sales, according to the consumer durable industry.Although, government's decision to double the basic custom duty on ACs, refrigerators and washing machines to 20 per cent from the existing 10 per cent would encourage domestic manufacturing, said the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA)."Increase in the basic customs duty on ACs, refrigerators and washing machines will bring back the emphasis on Centre's 'Make in India' vision at the same time drive momentum for local manufactured goods and develop new capacities in India," CEAMA President Manish Sharma said. However, he also added: "Price rise for compressors can be a set back for the industry but, we are keeping a close track of the price impact as festive season is around the corner."The government on Wednesday doubled the import duty on ACs, household refrigerators and washing machines (less than 10 kg) to 20 per cent. The basic customs duty on compressors and speakers are also raised to 10 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively from 7.5 and 10 per cent.South Korean manufacturer LG said that it would have to immediately hike the price of its ACs and high end refrigerators."We would have to immediately hike our price. We are importing the compressors for our air conditioners, which are fully based on invertor technology. Besides we are also importing high end big door refrigerator (500 ltrs)," said LG Business Head Vijay Babu. While, Haier India president Eric Braganza said that this would led to increase of prices and may have impact on the coming festive season sales, which constitutes around 30 per cent sales of the industry."Prices would go up. ... as it is the dollar has gone up... might effect demand during the festival season," said Braganza. However, Godrej Appliances Business Head and EVP Kamal Nandi said that there would be little impact on the industry as it would only impact large size imported products which constitutes very less in numbers."As far as our industry is concerned, large size televisions, large size refrigerators â€" side by side and large size front load washing machines are the ones getting imported, which are very few in numbers as compared to the overall size of the market," said Nandi.Large size refrigerators with 500 litres and above capacity, sells only one lakh units which constitutes roughly one per cent of the industry volume."Moreover, as the consumers of this segment are value driven and not price sensitive, the increase in custom duties should not impact the sale for this segment," he added. While, home grown Mirc Electronics, which manufactures product under brand name Onida, has termed it as "good move"."Overall, duty increase is going to help in fiscal prudence and will strengthen the rupee, which will even benefit the industry at large," said Mirc Electronics MD Vijay Mansukhani. He also said that increase in customs duty on AC would not have much impact as this is not the season for AC sales.
  • Even as the battle for Delhi’s iconic Taj Mansingh hotel has kept Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) on tenterhooks for years, new CEO Puneet Chhatwal has been on a quiet signing spree, bagging 12 new hotels in the last six months, doing away with the mono brand Taj strategy of his predecessor, signing on new hotels in global hubs like London and Dubai and drafting an ambitious Aspiration 2022 strategy for the company to improve its EBITDA margins from 17% to 25% by 2022 .As the auction for the prized Mansingh hotel enters the final stages this week after years of litigation, Chhatwal who will personally supervise the bidding on Friday between IHCL and rival ITC Hotels said the Mansingh and Taj are the right fit. “The right name on Mansingh is Taj. That is the general opinion of most people and that should be the case for the next three decades too. We invested in the hotel at times when the country needed that hotel. I am hopeful that in the end business sense will prevail and parties will bid on what makes business sense and not any other factor. The only case where continuation of business is assured is with us,” said Chhatwal speaking to ET in an exclusive interview. IHCL reported a profit after tax of Rs 101 crore and consolidated revenues of Rs 4,165 crore for financial year 2017-18, turning profitable for the first time in six years. It announced signing of new hotels in markets like Makkah, Kathmandu, Dubai and London this year besides launching the first luxury resort in Andamans and new signings for Indian cities like Katra, Jhansi and Vishakhapatnam across its brands. The world’s biggest hotel chain Marriott may have opened its 100th hotel in India this year, but IHCL looks ready to take all competition head on. “In terms of number of hotels, we have 145 hotels and we are the largest. We are the hospitality company with the highest market cap; we have the highest number of business hotels, management contracts, palaces, safaris, lean luxury properties etc.. If I total all these metrics, we come on tops in 9 out of 10 metrics. Taj Hotels was, is and will be India’s largest hospitality company for a long time,” said Chhatwal. “Please remember the EBIDTA of just the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower is higher than the management fee income of many other leading chains in India put together,” he added. Chhatwal said the company has reduced the debt levels significantly to half with their rights issue. “We have no proposal to raise any more debt at this point of time. Now our focus is on monetisation of some assets, largely in secondary and tertiary markets, and the land banks that we own,” he said. IHCL’s board had approved a rights issue in August last year for raising capital around Rs 1500 crore. On the company’s international strategy Chhatwal said: “We have signed London (Heathrow), Makkah, Kathmandu, and another hotel in Dubai. San Francisco has become profitable. London is profitable. In Pierre, we will try to reduce our suffering but it’s an iconic hotel to have on your portfolio,” he added. Under Chhatwal the company has changed its brand architecture across brands, turning Vivanta into an upscale brand from a higher positioning and rebranding its budget brand Ginger. Chhatwal said it is important to have brand clarity to set targets for growth and to address different segments of the market. “There was some idea of going into the mono brand strategy for making Taj out of everything. That doesn’t work, you can’t make a Gateway hotel Taj in Hinjewadi and in Chikmaglur and so on. That clarity was important. Secondly, a lot of Vivantas were cannibalising the Taj in the same city… We redefined Vivanta, we took it a little down from upper upscale to just upscale,” he said. IHCL’s 12 new signings include five Ginger hotels, two Vivanta properties, four Taj hotels and one SeleQtion hotel which will be rebranding of Hotel Connaught in Delhi. Under its Aspiration 2022 strategy IHCL is also looking to be less ownership driven. “Our current portfolio is 65% owned or leased and only 35% managed so it’s a reversal, so you get to a healthy balance. We also communicated to the market our aspiration of having 50% managed or fee based business and 50% owned...We have 8.5% growth in new number of rooms added to the existing hotels in operation in six months time. That means that our plan to grow 15% year on year, what we want to be measured on, is on track.
