- The local currency has fallen more than 12 per cent on a year-to date basis, making it one of the worst-performing currencies among emerging markets.Earlier in the day, the rupee resumed higher at 71.65 against yesterday's closing level of 71.75 a dollar at the interbank foreign exchange market here. According to media reports the Reserve Bank of India might have sold dollars in the morning session to prevent rupee from falling towards 72 level. However, the rupee was trading 29 paise down at 72.05 at around 12.45 pm (IST).Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Adviser, SBI said that the rupee depreciation of 13 per cent in 2018 and around 7 per cent since June 2018 when the RBI started hiking rates is largely in consonance will dollar strengthening against all currencies.âThe rupee could not have been immune to such and hence the current depreciation was long overdue and trends in NDF market (rupee at 75 and implied 1 year yield at 7.7 per cent) suggest the pain might not be just over yet!âFinance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday attributed the fall in rupee to global factors and said there was no need for panic or knee-jerk reactions. He further said the Reserve Bank is doing whatever is necessary to deal with the situation. The rupee had its worst month in three years in August as crude rallied on speculation sanctions on Iran will shrink global supplies. The crude import bill for the worldâs fastest-growing oil user surged 76 per cent in July from a year earlier to $10.2 billion. That pushed up the trade deficit to $18 billion, the most in five years, a Bloomberg report said.India imports nearly 83 per cent of its crude oil requirement.

- SC rules: Gay sex is not a crime
- In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court struck down section 377 IPC in so far as it punishes sex between consenting adults in same sex relations. It termed the 2013 judgment constitutionally impermissible. A five-judge Constitutional bench, led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, was hearing a clutch of petitions challenging Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Today's verdict comes on five petitions moved by dancer Navtej Jauhar, journalist Sunil Mehra, chef Ritu Dalmia, hoteliers Aman Nath and Keshav Suri and business executive Ayesha Kapur.

- The rupee slipped below the 72 mark for the first time ever on Thursday even as US dollar eased a bit in global markets.
- The Supreme Court on Thursday restored a landmark Delhi High Court judgement which had decriminalised homosexuality in a move that was immediately hailed by the minority LGBT community.A five-judge bench led by CJI Dipak Misra diluted Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, to exclude all kinds of adult consensual sexual behaviour. The law will still stand on the statute book to deal with unnatural sexual offences against minors and animals such as sodomy and bestiality. The dreaded section not only made any kind of homosexual behaviour but also other kinds of âunnaturalâ sex such as oral and anal sex etc a criminal offence."Section 377, IPC, to the extent that it criminalises consensual sex between two adults is arbitrary, irrational and hence liable to be partially struck down."A.M. Khanwilkar, R.F. Nariman, D.Y. Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, were the other judges on the bench. The judgement was unanimous. The bench, however, stopped short of striking down the law. Instead the bench spoke up for the LGBT community's right to enjoy equal rights under the constitution. This will help the community claim equal constitutional status as other citizens. It also affirms their right to claim the right to adopt, marry and have a family. It may also prevent social ostracism with the court declaring affirmatively that it was not a mental disorder. But something inate to a human being. The Delhi High Court had in 2009 taken this view, but a bench of the top court had controversially undone the ruling saying changing mores were best left to Parliament to deal with.Section 377 makes even consensual sexual acts -- both homosexual and heterosexual â" a crime if they are against the order of nature. Those in favour of diluting the law to decriminalise all consensual sexual behaviour have argued that majoritarian morality must make way for constitutional morality which makes it mandatory for the state to provide equality to all.No one can be discriminated against only on the grounds of their sexual orientation and called for constitutional protection to even sexual minorities. Those against diluting Section 377 urged the court to retain the law on the statute book citing morality, religion and cultural ethos of India. The government on its part left the issue to the court, but insisted it cannot go beyond debating criminality, to examine other civil rights for the community such as the right to marry, adopt etc.Several leading lights of the small but significant LGBT community had challenged the very existence of the law on the statute book.
- With Jet Airways delaying salaries of its pilots and engineers for the second consecutive month amid a severe financial crunch, its pilots have warned the management of "non-cooperation" over default on payments. The Naresh Goyal-promoted private airline, in which UAE national carrier Etihad holds 24 per cent stake, is facing acute cash crunch after posting two back-to back quarterly losses this year. While its losses stood at Rs 1,036 crore in the March quarter, the losses jumped to Rs 1,300 crore RPT crore in the subsequent June quarter of the current fiscal."Withholding salaries, that too without prior notice, is a serious matter and the management will bear sole responsibility for any repercussions," Jet Airways' pilots said in a communication to the management earlier this week."We would like to advice that failure to address the above points and not paying the salaries on time would lead to non-cooperation by pilots," they warned.Response to a query sent to Jet Airways on this was awaited.Significantly, Jet Airways had delayed payment of July salaries to its staff earlier. It had proposed an up to 25 per cent cut in salaries of its employees in late June but was forced to defer the plan following opposition from its pilots' union - National Aviator's Guild (NAG) - and engineers."(Earlier) it was agreed that, henceforth, salaries would be paid on time and, if there were to be a delay, the same would be communicated to the pilots well in time," the pilots said."We are deeply disappointed over both these conditions being violated by the management and the pilot body would be sure to share our disappointment," they said. The pilots had written to airline chief executive Vinay Dube late last month expressing their displeasure over the "unnecessary" increase in expenditure in the recent times. In the fresh letter, they have also demanded that "all unnecessary positions and committees/ groups created in the last three months be dissolved with immediate effect and the hiring of the expensive expats (vis-a-vis domestic pilots) be stopped forthwith.""We trust you will treat the above with the urgency it deserves and take immediate steps to resolve the situation," they said in the communication.
- State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has made oil and gas discoveries in Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal that may potentially open up two new sedimentary basins in the country, the firm's director for exploration has said.ONGC had previously opened six out of India's seven producing basins for commercial production. It is in the process of adding the eighth by putting Kutch offshore on the oil and gas map of India."The seventh basin was opened way back in 1985. We are looking at adding three more basins in next five years time," ONGC Director (Exploration) Ajay Kumar Dwivedi said. The firm has found gas deposits in a block in Vindhyan basin in Madhya Pradesh that is now being tested, he said adding that the find is at 3,000-plus meters.ONGC has drilled four wells after the discovery and will now hydro-frack it by the end of the year to test commerciality of the finds.Similarly, an oil and gas discovery has been made in a well in Ashok Nagar of 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, he said adding that one lakh cubic meters per day of gas flowed from one object that was tested. Now, the firm would go for appraisal of the find, only after which commercially exploitable reserves could be established.Dwivedi said the company is on the way to putting the Kutch offshore discovery to production. This would make Kutch India's eighth sedimentary basin. Cauvery was the last Category-I producing basin which was discovered in 1985.ONGC had made a significant natural gas discovery in the Gulf of Kutch off the west coast a few months back, which it plans to bring to production in 2-3 years, he said.India has 26 sedimentary basins, of which only seven have commercial production of oil and gas. Except for the Assam shelf, ONGC opened up for commercial production all the other six basins, including Cambay, Mumbai Offshore, Rajasthan, Krishna Godavari, Cauvery, and Assam-Arakan Fold Belt. The discovery in Kutch offshore may hold about one trillion cubic feet of gas reserves. The spread of Kutch offshore basin covers an area of 28,000 square kilometers in water depth of up to 200 meters and will become eighth producing basin of the country. He, however, said in order to monetise the discoveries in the three new basins, "a favourable fiscal regime and concessions" are needed. This, because the current gas price of USD 3.06 per million British thermal unit, is "challenging", he said adding the discoveries in a tight reservoir, where the cost of production is higher.Cambay, Mumbai Offshore, Rajasthan, Krishna Godavari, Cauvery, Assam Shelf and Assam-Arakan Fold Belt are Category-I basins with established commercial production. Category-II basins Kutch, Mahanadi-NEC (North East Coast), Andaman-Nicobar, Kerala-Konkan-Lakshadweep where known accumulation of hydrocarbons are there but no commercial production has been achieved so far.Himalayan Foreland Basin, Ganga Basin, Vindhyan basin, Saurashtra Basin, Kerela Konkan Basin, Bengal Basin are Category-III basins having hydrocarbon shows that are considered geologically prospective. The remaining basins of Karewa, Spiti-Zanskar, Satpuraâ"South Rewaâ"Damodar, Chhattisgarh, Narmada, Deccan Syneclise, Bhima-Kaladgi, Bastar, PranhitaGodavari and Cuddapah are classified as Category-IV basins having uncertain potential which may be prospective by analogy with similar basins in the world.
