- âRBI stopped intervening as that raises risks of tightening domestic liquidity.â
- Analysts were looking at 72 only as a psychological level for rupee. But with rupee having breached the 72-level against dollar, what is it that is causing the Indian rupee to be one of the worst performing currencies in EM? Yes, no doubt, the fundamentals for India look much better compared to the likes of Turkey and Argentina which are coming under severe pressure. But the reality is that foreign investorsâ sentiment towards emerging markets (EM) is quite poor now. Whether it is justified or not, the fact is foreign investors are putting greater scrutiny on economies that run current account deficits and India does run a current account deficit which is expected to widen in the near term, given the elevated oil price. The weakness in the rupee is a reflexion of the fact that foreign investors have been very cautious and while India has seen some FPI inflows in the last couple of months, it has not been enough to fully fund the current account deficit and this is the main reason for rupee hitting all-time lows. When any currency is in such a free fall, there is no point looking at levels. It can breach to and go to any level. What is your view? When you have a currency like the rupee hitting all-time lows, there is really no yardstick or measure that you can look at. One of the things we look at is an estimation of the fair value of the rupee to give us an idea of whether or not, it has been overshot. Based on our assessment, we think that the rupee even at current levels is still overvalued. Fair value is more towards the 73 level and in the current environment, it is possible to see the currency actually overshot on the other side. It is quite possible that we are going to have to contemplate further weakening in the rupee if sentiment towards EMs does not improve. We are witnessing a free fall in the rupee day after day. Ideally a gradual depreciation of the rupee is what most would like to see given that it could improve our exports and our competitiveness in the global trade market. But is this sudden free fall a little detrimental for our own economic health? At this point, it is not going to do wonders for our confidence. Part of the reason why we have seen such a sudden gapping in the rupee is that the RBI which previously had been intervening to smooth the volatility in rupee, looks to have reduced the extent of their involvement in the FX market. Our view is that the reason the RBI has reduced their intervention is probably not because reserves are inadequate. India actually has ample reserves but it is because intervention raises risks of tightening of domestic liquidity. But when rupee weakens to such a level, a lot of issues happen in the financial market. Different funds have different mandates and importers and exporters also have mandates which they have to execute if rupee breaches a level. What happens then?Yes, the danger here is that you start to see onshore scrambling and buying up of dollars which could accentuate the moves. At this current juncture, it is allowing the financial markets to reach a level where it starts to become attractive enough for FPIs. In this current environment, it is probably futile for the RBI to continue to intervene to halt something that they cannot really have too much control over, given that the US Federal Reserve is expected to hike interest rates this month. The financial assets will have to find a level that the foreign investors feel is attractive enough and that involves both news in EM hitting high and also currencies weaken to compel favourable valuations for FPIs to start getting back in.

- With Jet Airways delaying salaries of its pilots and engineers for the second consecutive month amid a severe financial crunch, its pilots have warned the management of "non-cooperation" over default on payments. The Naresh Goyal-promoted private airline, in which UAE national carrier Etihad holds 24 per cent stake, is facing acute cash crunch after posting two back-to back quarterly losses this year. While its losses stood at Rs 1,036 crore in the March quarter, the losses jumped to Rs 1,300 crore RPT crore in the subsequent June quarter of the current fiscal."Withholding salaries, that too without prior notice, is a serious matter and the management will bear sole responsibility for any repercussions," Jet Airways' pilots said in a communication to the management earlier this week."We would like to advice that failure to address the above points and not paying the salaries on time would lead to non-cooperation by pilots," they warned.Response to a query sent to Jet Airways on this was awaited.Significantly, Jet Airways had delayed payment of July salaries to its staff earlier. It had proposed an up to 25 per cent cut in salaries of its employees in late June but was forced to defer the plan following opposition from its pilots' union - National Aviator's Guild (NAG) - and engineers."(Earlier) it was agreed that, henceforth, salaries would be paid on time and, if there were to be a delay, the same would be communicated to the pilots well in time," the pilots said."We are deeply disappointed over both these conditions being violated by the management and the pilot body would be sure to share our disappointment," they said. The pilots had written to airline chief executive Vinay Dube late last month expressing their displeasure over the "unnecessary" increase in expenditure in the recent times. In the fresh letter, they have also demanded that "all unnecessary positions and committees/ groups created in the last three months be dissolved with immediate effect and the hiring of the expensive expats (vis-a-vis domestic pilots) be stopped forthwith.""We trust you will treat the above with the urgency it deserves and take immediate steps to resolve the situation," they said in the communication.

"Since 2011 Lupin has helped to create a total of 560 graduates with 181 students passing out this year (2018)," C Srinivasalu, senior vice president (HR) Lupin told reporters in Goa Thursday. This program will bridge the manpower requirement of pharmaceutical sector in a big way," he said. Addressing media, Yashwant Mahadik, president, global human resource, Lupin. said program was conceptualised in the year 2010 due an acute shortage of skilled manpower. "Historically, Lupin was recruiting 1,000 plus fresh graduates every year with no relevant job skill, and sensed that there was a need of job-ready graduates with appropriate technical and life skills," he said.
