Vivek Mavani prefers low beta plays, betting on these two themes - One of those penalised was 40-year-old Vikram, who worked for a monthly salary of Rs 10,000 as an Aadhaar operator at the SBI branch in a small village called Uchana in Haryanaâs Jind district. On December 26, 2018, UIDAI fined him more than Rs 33 lakh.According to UIDAI, Vikram had used his operator ID to generate Aadhaar cards using fraudulent documents between November 9 and November 17, 2018. It was done using âmultiple station IDsâ in Vikramâs name, which allowed Aadhaar cards to be made from multiple devices â" 143, to be precise. Every device, like a laptop, desktop or tablet, used for Aadhaar enrolment is registered with UIDAI and identified by the âstation IDâ.SBI officials pointed out that as âregistrarâ (as all banks entrusted with Aadhaar enrolment are), only they could have approved multiple station IDs but they had not done so. The bankâs officials in Chandigarh wrote to their corporate office in Mumbai to raise the issue with UIDAI, saying they did not create these multiple station IDs and there must have been lacunae in UIDAIâs security system that allowed âsomeone to hack the system and generate multiple station IDsâ in Vikramâs name.Even more baffling was the misuse of Vikramâs personal biometrics (fingerprints in this case) to generate Aadhaar cards, carry out unexplained transactions at places like the I-T department, Maharashtra government, MP government, National Informatics Centre and various banks, and even withdraw money from his personal accounts. All this time, UIDAI did not act against any bank official, which would have been the case had there been a lapse or wrongdoing by SBI officials.SBI deputy general manager B Rajendra Kumar confirmed that he was aware of the âmisuse of the biometricsâ of Vikram and problems facing their sub-vendors. âWe have, through our corporate office in Mumbai, raised this issue with UIDAI. The authority should be more transparent with us and let us know how this is happening. They should also guide us on the issue and, above all, make their database more secure,â he told TOI.An internal inquiry by the bank, and also the agency (vendor), cleared Vikram of the charges levelled by UIDAI, and SBI has already requested the authority to remove the penalty and allow him to return to work. Seeking UIDAIâs response, TOI wrote a mail to its chief executive officer (CEO) and media in-charge on January 4, 2019. In its reply, sent January 18, UIDAI refused to share the details of the case but admitted that an inquiry was on.Meanwhile, almost all the operators, except Vikram, were cleared by UIDAI and allowed to return to work. On January 9, the authority finally introduced an additional step in the registration of Aadhaar operators as an extra security measure.âAlso, some unscrupulous elements have been attempting to register multiple machines but UIDAI has an inherent system in place to detect any such attempt and appropriate action is taken on a daily basis on operators who err. UIDAI imposes financial disincentives and blacklists errant operators. However, it relooks into the issue if someone is wrongly penalised. It would be pertinent to mention here that divulging details of any specific case under inquiry would not be appropriate in the interest of the case,â UIDAI told TOI when specifically asked about Vikramâs case.
- see a point in venturing into midcaps, Vivek Mavani, Vivek Mavani Financial Services, tells ET Now. Edited excerpts: What is happening in the midcap space? Nifty has not cracked down, there is no problem in the world but the index is down for nine days on the trot now? We are now seeing the unravelling of a lot of long positions which market participants including the promoters had taken by way of leverage in 2017 and 2018. The theme in the correction this time around is unravelling of leverage both at the investor level as well as the promoter level. The liquidity condition is tight as far as NBFCs and the general financial system is concerned. The sentiment is weak because a large number of those midcaps have certainly not kept up with the earnings growth or in terms of delivery of performance in line with the huge expansion of valuation multiples that we have witnessed in the last two-three years. It is a reversion to the mean, in terms of the valuation multiples which are in line with the reset lower rates of growth both from what is being delivered as well as what is expected in future. How are you looking at this whole Essel Group issue? What are you telling clients? As far as the Zee Group is concerned, the largest is Zee Entertainment. From the current price point of view, there is value in the company as also a lot of potential. Promoters do have leverage at the holding company level or at promoter level for some of their other businesses which are not in the public domain from the equity market point of view. But it is very rare for a promoter to come out and write an open letter to all investors as soon as the problem emerged, saying that while there has been some mistakes and they are facing some financial crunch but they are committed to make it all good. But good intent does not mean that the problem is over! By no means, the problem is over. The problem will be over when some of their group assets are sold, liquidity realised and the leverage at the group level reduced. What happens to the stock now? I would not want to trade on uncertainty except that there has been some assurance by the lenders including the NBFCs that they are not going to be pressing the margin calls and dumping the stock in the market. As long as those repeat episodes do not happen, probably they will stay in a range till the problem gets solved. Axis Bank results will be out today. Given how bullish a consensus call the Street has on corporate banks right now, are you little worried about what they are going to report today? I am not so much worried about what they are going to report today. Going by by at least the level of confidence as far as most PSUs and some of the troubled private banks are concerned, the worst is over as far as the NPA issue is concerned. Now is the time for some of those writebacks of provisions done in the last five years and some by way of recoveries that could happen. What I have been hearing and this is a Street rumour that Cobrapost is going to come out with something sensational. Probably some of the market participants could be nervous about if any of the banks are named in that. From the numbers point of view, I am not so much worried about what they will report or the outlook that they are going to give out. This is the first result that the new Axis Bank CEO is going to declare. He will probably lay down the path forward and give us much more clarity in terms of how bad the situation is inside the bank and what are corrective steps going ahead. How are you playing the divide between midcaps and largecaps? My preference is for largecaps, namely TCS, Infosys and tech Mahindra in that order. As far as midcaps are concerned, they have had a stellar run by and large through 2018 and today the valuation gap between midcap and largecap IT has narrowed considerably. The growth rates for the midcaps and largecaps do not seem to be much different, The largecaps have been growing in the 15-18% range, barring TCS which has been reporting 23-24% earnings growth in last few quarters. Most midcaps also are in that same range but the valuation gap is now much lower. The play on midcaps is only when the valuation gap between midcap valuations and largecap multiples is significant. But when the opportunities narrow, as it happened in 2018, I do not really see a point in venturing into midcaps at this point of time.Apart from Zee, there was a massive selling in Sterlite Tech amd Max Financials. The view is that every promoter who has leveraged his personal shares to raise capital is going to run into trouble. Do you think that fear is overdone? As a broad brush generalisation, fear certainly is overdone because not every promoter is in a situation of a financial crunch. Not every company is reporting bad performance so that there could be selloff from even long-term investors based on disappointing performance. Then there is the intent of the promoters. You may doubt a few promoters but you cannot be doubting all of them. If that is the case, then there is no business to be in this markets in the first place. Coming back to the specific examples, Sterlite Technologies from a long term point of view, shows investment merit. The stock has corrected almost 35% from the top and given the growth outlook and the earnings that they have been delivering and are likely to report given their order books and expansion plans, the valuations are reasonable.About Max Financial, I am not sure because I do not track it closely. So, I will reserve my comments at this point of time. What are you recommending from the broader markets? In terms of high conviction ideas, I will stick with low beta plays both at sectoral level as well as individual stocks. I prefer city gas distribution stocks, namely Mahanagar Gas, Gujarat Gas and the recent listing Adani Gas. The second space is an extension of the rural theme plus urban consumption coming back. It is the two-wheeler space. The valuations are fairly compelling. Growth is a question mark in the short term, but medium to long term, I have no issues with valuations in case of Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp.I am willing to wait it out in that sense so that is the second pocket. For me, the proxy play for the extension of rural theme in terms of tractors is Swaraj Engines and Mahindra Finance which addresses part of rural consumption and tractors. I would like to specially mention Sun Pharma. Post all those events, announcements, controversy, etc, and the huge amount of discussion in the last few weeks, the collateral damage in terms of stock price is done with. Unless new negative developments come about, the worst is over from the stock price point of view. I would be a buyer at these levels. A disclaimer is that already on behalf of both for myself and as well as clients, we have positions in all of the stocks mentioned. What is your call on OMCs given that there is a higher chance of crude being subdued than staging a rally? I am actually neutral on OMCs -- neither bullish nor bearish. I do not really see a trade in the OMCs notwithstanding where the crude is going or where the reset for the fuel prices are, because in an election year and maybe for rest of the year immediately post elections, and from the fuel pricing point of view, one is still not sure as to what would be the stand of the government that is number one. And number two is as far as crude price is concerned, although they have been at much lower levels than earlier, one is still not sure. I would just refrain from getting into trade and in any case, there have not been any sharp movements to really find the trade over there. Friday is the budget day. Do you think something market moving could be announced and is there near term budget trade in that sense? I do not really see a budget trade per se. Let us accept that I make a big deal out of the budget and get excited but the market has its own mind and the mood and probably 10 days later, it will be forgotten. But yes, this being a budget just two-three months before the election. In terms of the minimum income for the poor, although Congress seems to have now got a heads-up, even the current government seems to be mulling something and there could be some announcement over there which could stimulate consumption in the medium term. But beyond that, I do not really see much tinkering in terms of most of the items of the budget whether it is on the taxation side or non-taxation side.

- CHANDIGARH/JIND: Officials of State Bank of India (SBI) have alleged that data of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been misused. Logins and biometrics of their Aadhaar operators have been misused to generate unauthorised Aadhaar cards, bank officials informed UIDAI. Countering the charge, UIDAI said, âAadhaar database is fully secured and no security breach, biometric or otherwise, has taken place.âSBI, like other banks, was given an Aadhaar enrolment target for which it selected vendors â" FIA Technology Services Pvt Ltd and Sanjivini Consultants Pvt Ltd â" in the Chandigarh region which covers Haryana, Punjab, Himachal, J&K and the UT of Chandigarh itself. However, of close to 250 operators employed with these agencies, nearly half were penalised in the last two months and were either deactivated or blacklisted. This brought SBIâs Aadhaar enrolments to a halt at many branches, causing the bank to fail to meet targets and face penalties.

- A put ratio spread on Nifty options is a strategy brokers and traders are initiating ahead of the Interim Budget for FY20. They said this could serve a dual, punting and hedging strategy before the event.Given the sombre market mood, with fears of the fisc overshooting and bond yields rising due to a variety of reasons, put ratio is a short Nifty strategy on anticipation of the bellwether index not falling substantially below 10,100 during or post the event on February 1. It uses Nifty options expiring on February 28.Rajesh Baheti, MD of leading arbitrage and jobbing firm Crosseas Capital Services, and Rajesh Palviya, derivatives head at Axis Securities, said the strategy could be used to punt as well as hedge oneâs portfolio. It consists of buying a 10500 put and selling two 10100 puts. The sale of the two, deeper out of the money (OTM) put options indicates the trader is shorting volatility, which will drop post the event. Basis Mondayâs provisional closing prices, the 10500 put costs Rs 139 a share while the 10100 put costs Rs 56.The sale of two 10100 puts fetches the client Rs 112 a share. This helps cut the cost of the 10500 purchased put to Rs 27 share. The debit being Rs 27, the level below which the client begins to profit is 10,473. The maximum profit of Rs 373 a share happens if the Nifty corrects to 10,100 during or post the Budget.Below this level the profit begins to drop until 9,727 â"- the lower break-even point below which losses can be unlimited as the client has sold two puts. So long as the Nifty stays at or above 10,473 â" the upper break-even point (UBEP)-- the maximum a client can lose is Rs 27 a share. At 10,100, the trader earns a gross profit of Rs 373 as the 10500 put is in the money (ITM) by Rs 400. However, since the client had debit of Rs 27, the max profit is capped at Rs 373. Each point below 10,100 reduces the profit till it becomes zero at 9,727.Assume Nifty hits 10,000 post the Budget; the 10500 call is Rs 500 ITM. The two 10100 sold puts are Rs 200 ITM. So, the trader receives Rs 273 (500-200-27). If Nifty hits the LBEP of 9,727, an unlikely event, the 10500 put is worth Rs 746 less the debit. The two 10100 puts are worth Rs 746, meaning no profit no loss. However, if the Nifty sinks to 9,600, the 10500 put is worth Rs 873 while the two 10100 puts are worth a combined Rs 1,000, causing a Rs 127 a share loss to the trader. That the markets are nervous is borne by the PCR of the January 31 expiry Nifty options slipping to 0.85 Monday from 1.01 Friday.
- Mindtree founders continue their search for a white knight even as they oppose the largest shareholder and Coffee Day founder V G Siddharthaâs impending sale of his 21% stake to L&T. The infra giant is expected to trigger a hostile takeover if it strikes a share purchase deal with Siddhartha, unseating the founders of the Bengaluruheadquartered, mid-tier IT services company. The four Mindtree founders â" Krishnakumar Natarajan, N S Parthasarathy, Subroto Bagchi and Rostow Ravanan â" together own over 13%.TOI on Monday reported that L&T has taken an enabling resolution to reach a deal with Siddhartha. L&T is awaiting completion of legal formalities, including an income tax reprieve after the department issued prohibitory orders on transferring 4.2% of Siddharthaâs holding in Mindtree. The founders are continuing with their sentimental lobbying, hoping to stall a hostile takeover at the last mile.An email sent to Natarajan on their strategic recourse remained unanswered till the time of going to print. The founders believe that the 19-year-old Mindtree still has a long runway and they are capable of steering it towards new milestones â" the $1-billion revenue target being the closest. At an industry level, Hexaware founder Atul Nishar said the Indian IT industry hasnât seen a hostile takeover yet. âSome of the mid-sized IT firms are run by credible management teams, raising the bar on compliance. Any attempt of hostile takeover appears like a punishment for honesty. The software industry runs on relationships between management teams and clients, and if the management changes abruptly, itâs not good for business or shareholders,â Nishar, who sold his company to Baring Asia, said.
